Extended Summary
Tane and Felicity are walking on the beach. Felicity describes her first counselling session as weird, saying she thought she’d get some practical advice or memory recovery tips but the counsellor just wanted to talk. Tane says that’s basically what it’s about. Eden appears and also asks how it went. Felicity says she doesn’t want to do another recap and has to get to Salt.
At the Diner, Alf is annoyed with Marilyn for not telling him about the death threats she was getting. Marilyn says she wanted him with Martha otherwise he’d be hurt. Alf retorts that people did get hurt, including Roo. Marilyn says if she had her time again she’d do it very differently.
Tane and Eden continue to accompany Felicity as she heads towards the surf club, saying she wants to check on things for later. They run into Mali, who is back at work, at least as far as doing maintenance on his boards is concerned. Felicity advises Tane to go and check on the gym. Eden tells Tane she’ll keep an eye on Felicity. While Tane is looking the other way, Mali clutches his ear in pain and nearly collapses but says he’s fine.
At the Diner flat, Rose arrives home; Xander is standing shirtless in the kitchen. She tells him about arresting the bomber and he tries to get her to go out and celebrate. She says she doesn’t feel like it with Roo in hospital. Kate emerges from Xander’s room looking awkward and says she has an appointment to get to. Rose asks Xander what he’s doing but his response is to chase after Kate.
Xander catches up with Kate by her car. He suggests they need to talk and says they can go for a coffee after he’s got dressed, unless she really does have an appointment. Kate says she has to go. Xander says to let him know when she’s done. He heads back to the flat where Rose tries to get him to come down the beach with her. Xander says he’d rather have the lecture there. Rose says she doesn’t know what it’s like for him and Kate but she does know him and knows he’ll do the right thing. She asks if he’s okay and he admits he isn’t.
At Salt, Eden tries to get Felicity to stop working and talk to her. Felicity says all anyone wants her to do is talk, even though she doesn’t remember anything, including the therapist. Eden says it’s not just about remembering but about learning to deal with how she is now. Felicity calls it a waste of time. Later, she serves some customers before reverting to talking to Eden, who asks her not to give up counselling. Tane chooses that unfortunate moment to turn up and asks how she’s going. Felicity, increasingly distressed, says she was attacked and doesn’t know who it was, it could be someone there now, someone she’s served or passed in the street, and she’ll never know. Tane suggests they take her home.
Xander tells Rose that this isn’t him: He and Kate talked and said they wouldn’t go there but couldn’t help themselves. Rose says grief can make you act out of character. Xander asks for time alone to think. Rose ends up running into Mali outside the surf club and asks if Bree gave him the all clear to go back to work. Mali says that small business owners don’t have leave time: He doesn’t get paid unless the board shop makes money, so he can’t afford to take more time off. He insists he’s fine.
Xander meets up with Kate by the beach and she admits she didn’t have an appointment. Xander says he wishes he could be the person to take her pain away but it’s not healthy. Kate tries to protest but Xander says she needs to find another way to cope with losing Jamie and they shouldn’t contact each other anymore. Kate says if that’s how he feels and Xander says it’s about what’s right. Kate leaves.
Later, Rose presents Mali with takeaway at the flat, saying she didn’t feel like cooking. He notes he didn’t sell any boards and it’s the lessons that bring in the money anyway. Xander comes home and says he went for a walk after saying goodbye to Kate. Rose invites him to eat with them but he declines.
Tane and Eden walk Felicity home, with her being a bit bemused by her sudden entourage. Eden offers to talk some more but Felicity says she’d rather have a shower and will leave the two of them alone to talk about her. Eden asks Tane how he is and he admits he’s not great and counselling seems to be a step back for Felicity. At the Diner, Alf finishes a phone call with Martha, saying to give Roo his love. Marilyn chimes in, saying she’s prepared some supper for him. Alf invites her to eat it with him. Marilyn says she wasn’t sure he’d want her company. Alf says it wasn’t her he was angry at but the situation.
Rose suggests Mali hire out the practice boards but he says that would just mean more money if they get damaged. Mali wonders if Rose has prep work to do for court tomorrow and she says it’s already done. She tries to convince him that business will pick up. Mali wonders if maybe the doctors have got it wrong and he could go out in the surf. Rose tells him not to and he apparently agrees, although his expression when she’s not looking suggests otherwise. Sure enough, next morning he’s on the beach with his board. After adjusting an earplug, he paddles out into the water.
Tane finds Felicity by the pool and triple-checks that she’s all right before heading off to take gym classes, passing Eden as he does so. She offers pastries but Felicity thinks there’s a babysitting roster. Eden says she think of herself more as a life coach or guru. Felicity says she wants to remember because right now the police have no way of catching who did it and thinks Cash is avoiding her. Eden admits he’s going through social media footage of Battle of the Bands.
Out in the water, Mali sits atop his board before trying to catch a wave. He manages to stay standing for a bit but then falls off the board and flounders in the water…
