Extended Summary

Rose gets out of her police car and approaches the coffee cart but changes her mind when she sees Kirby is serving. She retreats back to the car but Kirby chases after her, saying that what happened last night was out of line and she doesn’t need a friend having a go at her like that. Rose winds the window up and turns the sirens on, gesturing that she can’t hear her. Kirby gives up and Rose drives off. Theo turns up and wonders what’s going on.

At Salt, Xander goes to check his phone but Mackenzie stops him, saying he’s checked it twelve times in seven minutes and wondering what’s going on. Xander says it’s more like ten but eventually admits that he and Kate kissed. He isn’t sure whether to call and check on her or text or forget it happened. Mackenzie tells him to do nothing, thinking Kate running off tells him all he needs to know, and takes the phone, saying he can have it back at the end of the shift.

Justin and Andrew are unpacking the security cameras. Justin hopes they have instructions but Andrew says he doesn’t need any and has already mapped out where they need to go. Leah arrives home and Justin asks about her meeting. She says the DPP have agreed that Andrew shouldn’t take the stand and they should just use his statements (although Justin will still need to testify), but the AVO wasn’t possible. They explain about the security cameras. Leah comments on Justin climbing a ladder in his condition and Justin says they’ll get Theo to do it.

At that moment, Theo is arriving at the Diner with Kirby, who has filled him in on her run-in with Rose. Theo is sympathetic and says Marilyn and Kirby did the right thing, although Kirby admits John, Roo and Mali might not agree. He gets the text from Justin and Kirby tells him to go. Marilyn asks Kirby about Rose. Kirby mentions Rose blaming them for the bomb. Marilyn accepts she might have a point.

Mackenzie approaches Xander on the balcony at Salt and says Kate’s ringing him, wondering what he wants to do. Xander doesn’t know, since it didn’t occur to him that might happen. The phone stops ringing while he’s debating. Xander is worried about saying the wrong thing but Mackenzie isn’t sure things can get any worse, reminding him Kate’s husband just died. She returns the phone. Xander calls Kate and agrees to meet.

Theo comes back in from fixing the cameras in the back yard. Justin says they need one at the front door and one at the back. Andrew corrects him: Two at the back. Leah quietly asks Justin if this isn’t just feeding Andrew’s paranoia but Justin doesn’t think it is paranoia. Leah looks on, worried, as he joins Andrew in watching the camera feeds.

Xander apologises to Mackenzie for mixing up desserts. Mackenzie jokes that it would be cheaper to pay him not to work there. Kate turns up and she and Xander exchange awkward greetings. Mackenzie gives him time off to chat to her. They walk in a park area where Kate apologises for panicking and running off. Xander says the kiss shouldn’t happen. Kate agrees they should unblur lines but says that she doesn’t get to see her stepson any more so she doesn’t have anyone else other than Xander.

Leah goes to see Rose at the police station and tells her about Justin and Andrew getting the security cameras installed. She asks about whether or not they’re necessary, but again Rose can’t give any guarantees. She says there’s no evidence that Vita Nova are planning revenge but they can’t rule it out, so the security cameras aren’t an overreaction.

At the Diner, Xander and Kate reflect on the fact they can still hang out. Xander cautiously asks her to think hard about whether she’s using him to avoid her grief and whether he’s helping her or holding her back. Nearby, Marilyn tells Kirby she’s spoken to Alf about Roo: There’s no change but at least she hasn’t deteriorated. Kirby wonders how Marilyn stays positive. Marilyn is upset that Kirby and Rose’s friendship has been threatened and wonders if maybe Kirby is reacting this way because Rose had a point, given that they did keep posting after Cash told them not to.

Kirby goes to the police station and asks Rose if they can talk for five minutes. Rose tells another officer she won’t be long and she and Kirby go into the interview room. Kirby says she was out of line and apologises. Rose admits she shouldn’t have snapped at her and Kirby says Rose didn’t need a friend having a go at her. She asks if they’re still friends and they hug. The police officer Rose spoke to before then comes in and says they’ve had a sighting of the suspect in the bombing at Yabbie Creek motel. Rose tells Kirby it’s the CEO. She and other officers hurry out.

Theo has finished fitting the cameras and heads out after getting Andrew’s approval of his work. Leah points out to Andrew that he hasn’t touched his sandwich and he starts eating it without taking his eyes off the camera feed. Justin calls it multitasking. Andrew then realises one of the cameras is glitching and dashes out in a panic. Justin tries to convince Leah Andrew’s just getting used to it.

At the Diner, Kirby fills Marilyn in on what she saw at the police station and assures her Rose will be okay. Theo arrives and Kirby tells him she and Rose have made up. Theo is pleased and tells her about Andrew bossing him about. Kirby says he needs someone now they’ve broken up and notes it’s good they can still be friends.

Mackenzie is accepting a delivery outside the surf club when Xander approaches. He says he and Kate talked and agreed the kiss was a mistake. Mackenzie says she’s glad his head’s back in the game. She goes to leave but Xander doesn’t follow her and asks if she really needs him. Mackenzie agrees to give him the rest of the day off.

As Kirby is preparing to leave work, Rose turns up and tells her and Marilyn that they’ve arrested the CEO. Marilyn and Kirby thank her and Kirby leaves as Alf arrives. Marilyn cheerily tells him about the arrest, saying they can put it all behind them. Alf points out that Roo’s still in hospital in intensive care.

Xander finds Kate parking her car nearby. She tells him she’s thought it over and decided being around him is what’s best for her: He’s the one good thing in her life and she doesn’t know where she’d be without him. She kisses him. Xander initially pulls back, shocked, but then kisses her back.

Alf tells Marilyn and Rose that the specialists don’t even know if Roo’s operation has been successful or not: They can’t do tests until she wakes up and don’t know when that will be. Marilyn again thanks Rose for making sure the person responsible can’t hurt anyone else. Rose leaves and Marilyn wonders why Alf isn’t still at the hospital. Alf says Martha’s there and he’s needed in Summer Bay with John out of action, before wondering how this happened.

Xander and Kate arrive back at the Diner flat, kissing. They break apart and Xander asks if she’s sure. Kate says she wants this. They resume kissing and go to his room, collapsing onto the bed.
