Extended Summary

Mali slowly picks himself up after the explosion, a ringing in his ears, and calls out. He finds Roo lying in the grass; she is conscious and he tells her to stay still. Going round the other side of the burning van, Mali finds John lying on his front, groggy. Mali gets out his phone and calls for an ambulance, saying there’s been an explosion. Meanwhile, Marilyn arrives back at the Diner, still trying to get hold of Roo. She tells Irene that John and Roo had already gone and Mali has gone after them. They head to the police station to file a report.

Rose waits for Cash outside his house. She suggests he take the day off but Cash says Tane is at the house. He thanks Rose for taking Flick’s statement, saying he wants to get who did it. They get a call about the explosion on Gully Road and don high vis jackets. The fire brigade are dousing down the burning van as they arrive; Rose recognises Mali’s van. Cash hurries over to John, who is being looked after by a paramedic and says he was hit in the gut. Rose checks on Mali and then on Roo, who is being loaded into an ambulance. Cash stays with John as another unit arrives. John can’t tell him much but recalls Mali flagging them down. Rose talks to a confused Mali, who tells her about the bomb. Cash declares it a crime scene.

Xander joins Bree on the balcony at Salt and asks if she’s going for a surf. Bree laments that she’s on call and Xander says he’s the one that has to spend all day staring at the ocean. Bree then gets a beep saying there’s been an accident and multiple casualties. As she leaves, Kate arrives to meet Xander. At the accident site, Cash is on the phone to the sergeant about Marilyn’s report. John tells Rose it must have been Stunning Organics and thanks Mali for his help. John is taken away in an ambulance. Mali is dizzy so Rose decides to take him to the hospital to get checked out. Cash greets the woman in charge of the forensics team and tells her about the bomb threat.

Bree greets Roo as the paramedics briing her into hospital and is told she has her spine immobilised and vitals stable. As Bree is ordering a CT scan, Roo announces that she can’t feel her legs. Back at the accident site, Cash chats to the forensics woman, who tells him the bomb was homemade and designed to do maximum damage. Cash looks at one of the Stunning Organics bottles left scattered by the explosion.

Kate tells Xander she picked Timothy up from school one day and spent an hour at the park with him. However, his mother’s said nothing about a formal custody arrangement. Xander suggests she get legal advice but Kate says she doesn’t have any legal rights. As they leave the surf club, Kate notes she doesn’t want to disappear from Timothy’s life. Xander points out she’s always got on with his mum and asks her to talk to her again.

Irene and Marilyn arrive at the hospital as Roo is being brought through. They briefly speak to her and Bree, with Roo telling them to call Alf. Later, John is brought in and they give him an update on Roo. John says she got the full force of the blast. Marilyn says it should have been her and John says it shouldn’t have been any of them. Bree sends him to cubicles and tells Irene and Marilyn that Roo has a fractured disc and needs specialist surgery. She’ll need to see a neurosurgeon. Marilyn goes to call Alf. Irene sees Rose arrive with Mali, who ends up throwing up in a cleaner’s bin. Cash approaches Marilyn, who says she never expected it to come to this.

Bree checks over Mali with Rose watching. She says he’s got a perforated eardrum. In most cases, they heal on their own, but it means staying out of the water for a few weeks until it’s healed. Cash speaks to them and tells Rose he’s heading back to the station. They both accept it must be related to Marilyn’s threats.

At the station, Cash goes through the file documenting the threats against Marilyn. Kirby turns up, somewhat bemused at being called in. Cash takes her through to the interview room and asks her about Stunning Organics, eventually telling her there’s been an attempted murder and showing her the photo of the bomb. He asks her to tell him everything that’s happened.

Marilyn is with Roo in ICU and tells her Alf and Martha are on their way. She notices Roo is shaking. Roo becomes confused, repeatedly asking where Alf is, before alarms go off and the nurse tells Marilyn to step back. Elsewhere, John remarks to Irene that he had the box in his office and it could have gone off in the club house. Bree arrives to tells him he’s going into theatre, before getting a call from ICU, rushing to a lift. The nurse tells her Roo’s BP is dropping. Bree realises she’s going into neurogenic shock and her heart isn’t pumping enough blood: They need to get her blood pressure up. Roo loses consciousness.

Rose tells Mali they’ll get some painkillers from the pharmacy. Kirby turns up and Rose gives her an update on John, who’s in surgery, and Roo. Kirby asks after Marilyn. Irene joins Marilyn in ICU and Marilyn tells her what happened with Roo. In the room, Roo continues to deteriorate despite Bree’s efforts and the Crash team rush to assist her, with Bree saying they need to intubate.
