Extended Summary

Ziggy and Mackenzie are walking near the surf club, discussing visiting Dean. Ziggy says there may be hand holding and Mackenzie says that they almost make her believe in happy endings. They run into Logan having a shower and briefly chat to him about Dean. Shortly after, Ziggy is with Dean at the hospital. Dean jokingly asks her to smuggle him out. She kisses him just as Mackenzie shows up with some surf magazines. Ziggy teases her about Logan. Dean asks about Bella and they admit she’s still upset about Nikau.

Bella chases after Nikau, asking him to stay and saying she doesn’t care what happened with Sienna and wants to be with him. Nikau tells her to leave him alone. Ari comes along and asks them what’s going on, but they both head off in opposite directions. Ari follows Bella back to the flat and asks what happened. Bella tells him about Nikau telling her he doesn’t want to be with her, also relating how he shut her down when she told him she forgave him at the hospital. Ari thinks he’s not thinking straight. Bella thinks he’s changed.

Ari goes home and finds Nikau, telling him this wasn’t what he meant when he told him to fix things. He thinks Nikau is punishing himself. Nikau tells Ari to leave him alone. Outside the Diner, Alf and Martha are discussing arrangements. Roo appears and says an artist has agreed to donate a sunscape they were interested in. She thinks they need to get big names involved while Martha is keen to get people talking about mental illness. Alf asks about lunch but Martha is preoccupied so he goes to order on his own. Roo wonders if he’s feeling left out. Martha thinks he isn’t interested in art.

Logan comes into Salt and Mackenzie welcomes him to her restaurant. She asks if he’s moved to Summer Bay and he says he’s in Reefton Lakes. He gets a call from a friend in Kabul which seems to be good news and heads out onto the balcony to take it. Later, Mackenzie joins him out there with his takeaway and asks him about working in Afghanistan. Ari appears and, after a brief chat to Logan, asks Mackenzie to check in on Bella. Mackenzie goes back to the flat and reminds Bella she couldn’t see a future for herself and Nikau a few week ago, adviseing her against putting her life on hold for him. Bella says Dean and Ziggy are back together but Mackenzie says they had to rebuild their lives first. She advises Bella to draw a line.

Logan joins Dean and Ziggy at the hospital with the takeaway from Salt. He announces Dean is getting out of bed today to start his rehab. Ziggy is pleased but Dean seems shocked and apprehensive. At the Diner, Martha tells Irene about the artwork that’s been donated. Irene suggests meeting an artist neighbour of hers face to face. Martha asks Alf to come with her and Roo encourages him but Alf refuses to leave the Bay.

Bella turns up at the Parata house and tells Nikau he doesn’t get to be the one to call it quits. She tells him she’s done and he can have all the space he wants, knowing he screwed up the best thing that ever happened to him. At the Diner flat, Ziggy is collecting clothes for Dean. She tells Mackenzie Dean didn’t seem that excited. Mackenzie seems more interested in the fact Logan was there. Ziggy notes it seemed like Dean was sending her away. Bella returns and tells them what she said to Nikau, noting she has to figure some stuff out and thanking Mackenzie for talking to her.

Roo asks Alf why he didn’t want to go and he says he’ll find another way to help. Roo joins Irene and Martha at the counter and they ponder if Alf’s worried about running into Kieran. Bella arrives and gives Irene a flyer to put up: She’s selling all her photography equipment except her mum’s camera. Soon after, Bella is on the pier, tearfully tearing up photos of Nikau and throwing them into the sea. Nikau is at home looking miserable. Ari comes over but Nikau shakes off his hand, so Ari leaves him alone. At the hospital, staff bring Dean his wheelchair and crutches. Ziggy takes his hand. Logan comes into Salt and he and Mackenzie smile at each other.

The physio, Grant, tries to get Dean to sit up. Dean insists on doing it himself but struggles. Ziggy asks if he needs more pain relief. Dean tells her to go, saying he’ll call her later. At Salt, Mackenzie tries to ask Logan about himself. He says he was in the army but doesn’t say why he left. He invites her to share a drink with him but Mackenzie declines, saying she’s not looking for anything at the moment.

With help from Grant and the crutches, Dean manages to stand up. Unknown to him, Ziggy is still in the corridor outside. Despite Grant’s words of encouragement, Dean isn’t impressed with what he’s done. He attempts to take a step but ends up slumping down on the bed, saying he can’t do it. Ziggy looks worried as he tells Grant to get out.
