Mackenzie meets a stranger. Tensions swell between Tori and Justin. Martha grapples with life in the bay.
Extended Summary
Ari and Mackenzie are walking along the beach. Ari is obviously distracted so Mackenzie suggests they go skinny dipping. Ari agrees without listening, only realising when she tells him to strip off. He admits he zoned out and explains he was thinking about Nikau moving away, mentioning Bella’s getting an emergency passport. They run into Jasmine, who asks how Tane is after he discharged himself. At the caravan park house, Alf continues to press Martha to move back to Summer Bay, saying the deal was for them to live together once they got married. Martha says her life is in Merimbula now and refuses to discuss it further.
Jasmine turns up at the Morgan house. Tori thanks her for agreeing to babysit at short notice but says she might not need her after all, since she’s heard Justin and Leah are on their way back. She explains about Justin’s back spasms. Jasmine picks up on the fact Christian stayed the night; Tori says he drank too much to drive home. As Jasmine goes to leave, Tori asks her to take Grace after all, since she’ll probably have a go at Justin when he comes back. Jasmine takes Grace to the Diner, chatting to Irene about her, before having to move on when Grace gets restless. Martha arrives. Irene asks if Alf’s with her and Martha snaps that they’re not joined at the hip before apologising. Irene offers to chat but Martha says she’s not good company and just wants to sit by herself.
At Salt, Ari shows Mackenzie a text he got from Nikau saying Bella’s passport came through with a lot of cheerful emojis. He notes his passport’s probably cleared as well, so at least he can visit Nikau. They wonder about the lack of response from Colby to Bella going and if he even knows. Mackenzie suggests throwing a farewell barbecue. At the Diner, Jasmine is sitting with a sleeping Grace, catching up on reading. She momentarily alarms Irene by saying she’s not keen on giving her back, before explaining that for the first time since she thought she was pregnant, she’s considering having a child of her own one day.
Justin is helped into the house by Leah and Christian, prompting an annoyed series of questions from Tori about why he’s not in hospital. Justin says he doesn’t need to be and Christian agrees that the scan showed the bleed was small and should sort itself out. Justin protests he’s at the hospital every day. Tori continues to argue the point and Christian insists they go for a walk. Tori thinks Justin’s being stubborn but Christian says, as his neurologist, he gives Justin medical advice. Tori is unhappy he won’t support her and Christian says he won’t if he doesn’t agree with her. Tori walks away.
Ari isn’t keen on inviting Colby to the farewell but Mackenzie insists he has to and sends him to do it. Christian enters and finds Tori at a table. He calls it their first fight and Tori calls it a heated discussion. She admits she still feels some guilt about the surgery, that if she’d let Christian go on he might have removed all the tumour. Christian replies that Justin could have ended up in a wheelchair. He says it’s Justin’s decision. Meanwhile, Leah suggests to Justin that maybe Tori’s right. Justin insists he doesn’t need nursing. Despite Leah reminding him Christian said to rest, he goes out for a walk.
Irene sees Martha ignore a call from Alf and asks if she’s ready for that chat now. Martha explains about Alf wanting her to move there, saying Summer Bay hasn’t been her home for over thirty years. Irene says she needs to talk to Alf and refuses to give her any more tea. At the caravan park house, Alf is leaving Martha a message saying he needs to apologise when Martha enters with Justin. She heads upstairs, saying she and Alf will talk later. Alf explains the situation to Justin. Justin notes they’ve been independent for a long time but Alf says he assumed being married meant living together. Justin realises they never spoke about it and cautions Alf about being stubborn.
Tori and Christian exit the surf club. Tori says she’s going to respect Justin’s decisions, but insists the change of heart is nothing to do with Christian. Just as they’re preparing for a make-up kiss, Jasmine appears with Grace. She asks about Justin and doesn’t seem happy about Christian answering that he’s medically fine. After she’s gone, Christian notes she isn’t warming to him. Tori is however, although both agree they need sleep after their all-nighter. Meanwhile, Alf brings Justin home to Leah and they exchange advice about stubbornness. Tori arrives back with Grace as Alf is leaving. She apologises to Justin, who notes Christian’s good for her and thanks her and Leah for looking after him.
Ari returns to Mackenzie at Salt. He says he pushed a note under Colby’s door but doesn’t think either of them want to hang out with the other. Ari leaves and Mackenzie checks on a customer at a table. Meanwhile, Alf and Martha are talking. Martha says she never thought about living together full-time but understands Alf assumed that when he asked her to marry him. Alf says he can build her a studio if that’s the issue. Martha says it isn’t: She likes her independence and thinks it makes the time they have together more special. Alf says he’s tired of driving up and down the coast and wants them both under one roof. Martha points out he wants it to be his roof.
Mackenzie says goodbye to the last few customers. The man from earlier, Paul, comes to the bar and asks if she knows Tane, who he knows used to work there. He says to give Tane a message: Time’s running out and he’s got until tomorrow. Mackenzie is confused but Paul walks away without explaining.
