Extended Summary

Ari and Tane are throwing a ball about near the beach. Mackenzie comes along and notes it’s the wrong ball, with Ari explaining her dad played AFL. Tane turns down an invite to have lunch with them, saying he’s due at work, and leaves them to it. Ari tries to throw the ball to Mackenzie but she just slaps it away. Later, she goes to Salt to get some invoices while Tane is working and tells him he doesn’t have to leave whenever she turns up. Tane thinks he does however. Ari arrives and wonders if Tane and Nikau are home for dinner. Tane expects Nikau will be with Bella and says he’s going out.

Roo arrives at the Diner in a flustered state and tells Marilyn about her date with Owen. She wishes she hadn’t said yes, given she had feelings for an exact replica of him. Marilyn tries to get her to put that to one side and focus on the fact it’s Owen she’s going out with. Roo can’t think of anything to wear except a sign saying “I feel really awkward” so Marilyn volunteers to help. Outside the house, Owen gives Ryder his rent, then tells him about the date. Ryder is somewhat bemused. Owen says he hasn’t been on a date since he was with his ex and asks Ryder what Roo likes. Ryder says she likes food and music.

Leah is cleaning and Ava is playing with Grace when Tori and Justin come home. Justin explains he’s going to see another doctor to see what they think about the surgery. Ava asks if he’s having the surgery and Justin says he’s considering it. Later, Tori is on the phone to a surgeon but learns they don’t even have any appointments available for two months. Justin isn’t keen on the idea and Ava is worried after half-hearing the conversation so Leah suggests they go out and leave Tori in peace.

Alf and Marilyn are sat outside the caravan park house when Roo appears, having changed into a rather flowing outfit for the date. Owen approaches and Roo is prompted to go over and talk to him. After they’ve exchanged compliments, Owen says he’s going to take her to an Italian restaurant in Reefton Lakes, then go to a bar and listen to some jazz. Roo says she’s sorry and walks away. Alf goes after her. Roo notes that six weeks ago she held Evan’s hand as she died and now she’s going on a date with his brother. She says it feels like a mistake and asks Alf to tell him. Marilyn and Owen are making small talk as Alf returns. He at first tries to claim Roo isn’t feeling well, then admits she had a change of heart. Owen accepts it and leaves.

At the Parata house, Ari and Mackenzie have just finished eating. Ari is worried about the fact Tane’s not there, since he thinks it might mean he’s involved in something dodgy. Mackenzie says he’s been doing well at work before suggesting they make the most of having the place to themselves. At the Diner, Leah asks Ava what she enjoys at school but all Ava can come up with is lunch. She is sent to pick out dessert and Leah asks Justin what’s troubling him. Justin says if he does have the surgery he doesn’t want it to drag on. Tori arrives with Grace and says she’s found a Doctor Christian Green who’ll see Justin tomorrow. Justin is thrown but Leah reminds him of what he’s just said so he agrees.

Next morning, Owen finds Roo on the veranda. He notes what Alf said about her being ill but Roo acknowledges that was a lie. She says she shouldn’t have said yes but did want to make it work. Owen says he’s going to take a walk up to the lighthouse and suggests she come with him, adding that it’s not a date. Meanwhile, Ari is walking Mackenzie to work, whilst equipped to go fishing. After saying his goodbyes, he sees Tane and asks what he was up to. Tane says he just went for drinks in Yabbie Creek and assures Ari he’s not involved in anything illegal. He sees two men approaching but doesn’t say anything to Ari. After Ari has gone, one of the men explains they found where Tane is from his housemate and offers him a job. Tane says he doesn’t do that sort of work anymore but the man pays no attention and says he’ll text him the details.

At the Diner, Leah asks Ava what she wants to do while Justin is at the hospital and Ava says make a three-tiered devil food cake. She tells Justin to come home as soon as he’s done and say yes to the doctor. Justin says he might not even need the operation. At the hospital, a doctor is sat with his feet up as he pesters pathology about sending him results. Tori isn’t impressed, telling him not to do that in her ED. He realises who she is and gives her a shock by revealing he’s Christian Green. Tori confirms he’s there to see her brother Justin, who turns up on cue and is called into the office by Christian.

Marilyn brings Alf a coffee outside the bait shop. They and Ryder see Roo and Owen going for their walk on the beach. Ryder notes there’s no hamper so it’s not a date; Alf advises him to stay out of it. Ari arrives looking to buy some bait. Roo tells Owen he walks like his brother and admits it’s a little strange. At Salt, Mackenzie tells Tane that Ari is worried about him. Tane says he’s spoken to him and it’s sorted. The two men from earlier come in; Tane tries to get rid of them but the spokesman says they just want a drink and a feed.

Christian looks over the cavernoma scans. Tori tries asking his opinion but he wants to talk to Justin, who explains he was concerned about the risks of surgery and thought he could manage it with medication. Christian says the cluster could still grow: Justin’s collapse was caused by cells bursting and the bigger it gets, the more likely it is to happen again. He says he doesn’t know the risk until he opens him up, comparing it to Justin working on a car engine: There’s a very high success rate and he’s never lost a patient, although he can’t guarantee it won’t come back. At the Morgan house, Leah and Ava are making the world’s greatest chocolate cake when Justin and Tori return. Justin says he’s having the surgery and Tori says it’s booked in for later in the week.

The two dodgy characters hassle the patrons at the next table, causing them to leave. Mackenzie tells the pair to get out. When the talkative one objects, Tane starts escorting them towards the door. The man breaks a bottle and slashes at Tane’s abdomen with it before leaving. Mackenzie realises Tane is bleeding.
