Extended Summary

Ari and Tane are at the bar in Salt. Ari gets a text from Nikau saying he’s going to chill at home for the rest of the day. He says he could get Tane a job on the site but Tane isn’t interested, saying it’d take too long to get paid and he has another idea Ari doesn’t want to know about. Ari says Colby is all over them and Tane insists he’s the only one with the guts to save the family. Mackenzie steps in as things get heated. Tane walks away and Mackenzie says she’ll go after him. Down on the beach, Tane talks to someone on the phone, saying to let him know if anything comes up. Mackenzie comes over, saying she doesn’t want to know what’s going on but Nikau needs both his uncles. She asks him to listen to Ari.

Ari comes downstairs at the surf club and runs into Dean, who has heard about the trip. Ari says Colby needs to stay out of his way. Dean advises him not to headbutt anyone. He gets a call from Ziggy and meets her by the beach. He is shocked at moving from a van to a flat to possibly her parents’ place. They note that it’d just be them without having to deal with Bella or Colby, but they’d be some way from the surf or Leah’s coffee. Ziggy suggests a pros and cons list.

Ben and Maggie discuss leaving the farm house in safe hands. Maggie suggests Dean and Ziggy could save for a place of their own. Ben is surprised she thinks they’re that solid, noting once it would have scared him but Dean’s good for her. Outside the Diner, Alf is telling Leah that the Italy trip is back on. Leah is pleased things have worked out for Ben and Maggie. Alf says they’ll be missed and notes they wouldn’t have said that when the family first turned up. Leah recalls the lunch where they found out the Astonis had bought the pier.

Ben retrieves an old t-shirt from a washing basket. Maggie insists he’s not taking it despite him protesting it’s full of memories. Ziggy and Dean turn up and explain they’ve decided not to take them up on their offer. Dean says he’s promised to help Colby out with the rent and Ziggy says it’d be weird living there without them. Ben and Maggie are a bit disappointed but accept it, instead asking them to stay for dinner. Later, Ben pops some champagne, even though they’re still in the middle of packing. Maggie struggles with a toast and Ziggy proposes to new beginnings.

At the surf club, Ari chats on the phone, arranging to go back to work and saying he’ll also take anything else they have on offer. Mackenzie appears with Tane and asks them to play nice. Ari asks Tane if he’s willing to listen to sense. Tane says not if Ari’s going to talk to him like a kid. Ari accepts that and they go for a walk. Tane says one job could set them up with rent for the rest of the year. Ari replies that “just one job” was what Mikaere said. He’s happy to be doing honest work and says he and Nikau need Tane around, especially since Nikau listens to Tane more than him. Tane agrees to do it his way.

Maggie finishes booking the flights, giving them two days to go to Cairns. She also stops Ben packing the t-shirt again. She goes to call Coco, and Ziggy goes with her to ask about her stuff. Ben asks Dean if he’d take over the board shop, for good, saying the business would never have happened without him. Dean says he’s not a shaper. Ben says he can do whatever he wants with it and suggests he talks to Ziggy.

Later, at the Diner flat, Ziggy thinks Dean should do it, saying he can run the place in his sleep. Dean says running the place when Ben isn’t around is one thing but he’d be responsible, and if Ben wasn’t leaving tomorrow, he could show him the ropes. It sinks in for Ziggy that they’re leaving tomorrow. She babbles about how she won’t be able to talk to them and will be all alone. Dean sarcastically thanks her and walks away, leaving her looking confused.

Mackenzie is curled up in bed with Ari, who comments on her still coming round after everything with Tane. He thanks her for helping convince Tane to stay. Mackenzie decides to go and get some water. She is looking in the fridge when Tane emerges from his room. He gets the water for her and they look at each other for a moment before she walks off. Tane goes back to his room and texts someone saying “I’m in. Set it up.”

Next morning, Ziggy wakes up to find Dean sitting by the bed. He is still worrying about the idea of taking over the board shop. Ziggy says Ben’s chosen to give it to him rather than selling it off or closing it. Dean wonders how he’d keep his surf lessons going while running the board shop as well. Ziggy says she’ll support him whatever he decides.

Outside the Diner, Leah tells Alf that Justin’s keen, she’s waiting to hear back from Marilyn and the catering’s sorted. Leah walks off as Dean and Ziggy come downstairs. Alf asks Ziggy when her parents are leaving and Ziggy says this afternoon. Alf wants to catch up with them before they go. Later, at the farm house, Ziggy and Maggie discuss the packing. Ben is at the leasing agency and is still trying to bring the t-shirt. Maggie produces Ziggy’s wedding album, saying she wasn’t sure whether to put it in storage or not and there’s some great family photos in there. Ziggy admits she’s been trying to pretend she didn’t have a wedding but decides to take it.

At Salt, Ari gets off the phone and tells Mackenzie that he’s got Tane a job, starting today. Mackenzie offers to take him home to pick Tane up and then drive them both to the site. When they get to the house, though, they find Tane’s things and car gone. Ari is frustrated, suspecting Tane came up with this last night and only told him what he wanted to hear. He asks her for a lift to work anyway.

Ben meets with Dean at Salt. Dean is going through paperwork and says he’s decided to take over the board shop. He asks what the business is worth, saying he’ll have to get a loan. Ben clarifies that he’s giving it to him, since Dean kept it running. Dean asks if he can call him if he has issues. Ben agrees but says not to expect him to answer the phone every time.

Dean heads back to the flat and sees Ziggy in the bedroom, looking at the wedding album and crying. Dean slips away without her seeing him, looking worried.
