Extended Summary
Simone returns to Salt and tells Brody about accusing Maggie of giving them a bad reference. She mentions what Maggie said about not knowing him and Brody feigns ignorance, saying he’ll make some calls and find out why they were rejected. Bella turns up, having got a message from Simone to meet her there. Simone says they’re going on a field trip to put her photography lessons to practical use. Brody suspects this is a way of avoiding Maggie and Simone agrees.
Shortly after, Bella is taking photographs on the pier and says she didn’t know learning could be fun. Maggie suddenly appears with a Year 12 class including Raffy and Ryder. Simone suggests they go somewhere else but Bella wants to take photographs nearby.
Marilyn arrives home to find John and Ben putting finishing touches on the kitchen. John says he’s already rung Jett’s care team to say they’re ready. Marilyn goes to get changed and Ben comments on how she seems nervous. At the hospital, Tori is telling Jett he should be able to go home today. John and Marilyn arrive and John makes a joke about Jett lying around which prompts Jett to say Marilyn didn’t marry him for his sense of humour. Jett shares Tori’s news; they are all pleased but there’s a certain tension.
Maggie directs her class to time how long it takes a boat to travel a distance. Simone comes over and apologises for what she said before but asks Maggie what she meant about not knowing Brody. Maggie makes it clear she thinks Simone doesn’t. Bella is taking pictures nearby and Raffy and Ryder join her for a chat. Simone comes over and asks Raffy about scheduling a tutorial, saying they made a commitment. Raffy sarcastically says her family aren’t good at those. Simone awkwardly leaves after saying to say if she needs help. Bella thinks Simone’s nice and Raffy says good luck cheering for her. She walks off and Ryder gives Bella an awkward look before following.
Near the surf club, Brody is on the phone offering to get more references without success. Mason comes along and Brody tells him that he was rejected for a rental because of his criminal record. Mason is aghast that Brody was going to move out. Brody retorts that the others have made it impossible for him to stay but says it doesn’t matter now. Mason is bewildered that Brody hasn’t told Simone about his ice addiction. Brody sarcastically thanks him for his support and Mason retorts that Brody’s made his choice.
At the hospital, Tori tells Marilyn that Jett will have an appointment with the physio every other day and they’ll look into increasing his gym visits. Marilyn thinks Jett is nervous about going home, since he has a whole care team at the hospital and at home he’ll just have her and John. Tori thinks their love will get him through it.
Raffy and Ryder arrive at the surf club; Raffy goes to the juice bar while Ryder goes to see Bella, jokingly complaining that she looks cool eating on her own and he looks like a loser. Bella wonders why Raffy is down on Simone when Brody was the one who was married. Ryder says Raffy’s mad with him too but he’s family, plus Raffy likes Ziggy who is Coco’s sister. Mason comes in and asks Raffy if she’s heard about Brody. Raffy goes back to the house and has a go at Brody for planning to move out. She says he was meant to be in love with Ziggy. Brody says if he’d stayed with her, he’d be living a lie, and things aren’t always black and white. Raffy accuses him of tearing their family apart.
At the hospital, John, Marilyn and Jett are waiting for news. John asks if anyone wants a coffee before admitting he doesn’t want one either. Tori and Mason come in and Tori says Jett can go home. Jett asks how they’ll get the wheelchair in and out of thecar. Tori says that’s why Mason’s there: John’s had him on stand by. Mason asks Tori if she’s spoken to Brody today.
Tori goes home to see Brody, who asks her to be the one person who doesn’t have a go at him. He admits he hasn’t told Simone anything about his past, not about his addiction or about witness protection. He says she fell in love with the person he is now. Tori encourages him to talk to her, having learned that keeping secrets doesn’t work.
Brody meets Simone on the beach and tells her they were turned down because he has a criminal record for theft and resisting arrest, and about his addiction. Simone lets go of his hands. He says he’s been clean for a year and a half. Simone says Maggie was right about her not knowing him and learns that Ziggy knew about it. She walks away.
John, Marilyn, Jett and Mason are leaving the hospital, with Mason wondering if Jett wants to say goodbye to any cute nurses. Marilyn rushes to catch a lift, with Jett taking longer to join the others inside. Meanwhile, Tori finds Simone on the pier and guesses she’s spoken to Brody. Tori says that Brody’s worked hard to overcome his addiction and is a different person now. She says Simone will have to work out if she can trust him.
At the surf club, Raffy complains to Ryder, who agrees that it’s quick for Brody and Simone to be moving in together. Bella comes over and says she understands why Raffy hates Simone. Ryder suggests she join them for a movie marathon. Bella says she has to do an assignment for Simone but Ryder convinces her that they’re more fun.
Upstairs in Salt, Simone joins Brody and says this experience has shown her that they don’t really know each other. She thinks they need to back off: She doesn’t want to break up but does think they need to get to know each other better and that they need to put moving in together on the back burner. Brody agrees. Meanwhile, John, Jett, Mason and Marilyn arrive back at the Palmer house. Jett bumps into the table but tells John not to move it, since he needs to get used to things. Mason leaves, saying to call him if they need anything.
At the Diner, Ryder tells Raffy and Bella his elaborate snacks theory of needing ice cream for horror movies, chips and dips for comedies and pizza for romcoms. Simone arrives and asks Bella how she’s getting on with the theory part of her assignment. Bella says she can’t start on it until she gets her photos developed and she’s hanging out with her friends now. The teens’ takeaway arrives and they leave.
John asks how Jett got on with the shower and Jett says the handrails are in the right place. The two of them prepare to play cards. Marilyn answers the phone and tells Jett it’s Colonel Kate Porter from the army. Jett shares a tense phone conversation before telling John and Marilyn she’s coming over to ask him questions about the incident in Afghanistan. John asks if they think he did anything wrong. Jett can’t see any other reason why they’d come.
