A near tragedy strengthens Tori and Jasmine’s friendship. Colby’s on the wrong side of the law. Alf farewells an old friend.
Extended Summary
Colby dresses for work at the flat and heads to the station. McCarthy takes him into the office, noting that if he’d waited longer they’d have replaced him. He has some forms to withdraw Colby’s resignation and also issues him his old gun. Colby has an audio flashback of a gun firing and seems shaken but shrugs it off. At the hospital, Tori is lying down on a bed as Jasmine checks on her: There’s no pain but they need to check the baby’s heartbeat. Jasmine uses a doppler and after a tense wait they hear the heart. Tori declines to see an obstetrician, wanting to go back to work. Jasmine says she could go home and convinces her to at least take a break.
Brody is meeting Simone at her van. He tells her he’s going to tell Ziggy about them tonight, which pleases her. He explains that he’s going to make sure Ben and Maggie are nearby and tell her he’s in love with someone else. Although they’re worried about how people will react, Brody says she makes him happy. Brody goes back to his flat and waits until Ziggy comes back from her surf. He asks her what she’s doing tonight and Ziggy says she has no plans. Brody says they should spend some time together.
Alf and John are loading bags into Martha’s car boot and arguing. Nearby Martha says goodbye to Marilyn, noting she has to get back to a routine. Marilyn asks her to visit again but Martha seems uncertain. John also says his goodbyes, before Martha gives Alf a goodbye hug and drives off. Alf tells the others he’s fine and shoos them away. Marilyn wonders why it didn’t work out. John says not everything has a fairly tale ending and promises to check on Alf later. At the police station, Colby is dealing with a phone complaint about overturned bins. McCarthy approaches with an evidence bag containing Ross’ watch: The driver whose car Colby commandeered found it in the boot. (We see a flashback to it being on Ross’ wrist when his body was placed there.) Colby says he doesn’t recognise it. McCarthy says he’ll send it to Homicide.
Brody meets Ben at Salt and asks him if he has plans for tonight. Ben says Maggie is doing marking so he’s watching The Endless Summer again. Brody suggests they chat over the next couple of weeks. Ben thinks he’s talking about the fact Ziggy’s 21st is in two weeks, saying he thinks they should plan a surprise for her. Ziggy arrives and says they need to do something bigger than last year, although they refuse to let her give them her ideas. At the caravan park, Alf is clearing out Martha’s van and sees some brushes she left. He sees Brody approach Simone but is distracted by a phone call. Brody tells Simone he can’t tell Ziggy just before her 21st. Simone asks if there’ll ever be a good time and whether telling her just after is any better.
Colby exits the surf club, leaving a phone message for Dean saying they have a problem. Jasmine and Tori approach and Jasmine comments on him being back in uniform. Colby says he’s getting lunch for his boss. After he’s gone, they discuss Colby dealing with Bella and Tori wonders if he’s heard from Robbo. Jasmine makes to go but first Tori thanks her. At the police station, McCarthy is on the phone arranging a courier for the watch. Colby interrupts, saying he’s realised it’s Dean’s watch. McCarthy is puzzled how it got in the car boot but Colby dismisses it as Dean’s craziness. McCarthy says they’ll both need to make statements to get it back and he’ll update Homicide, who were about to impound the car for forensics.
John approaches Alf outside the surf club with some “weird Indian beer” that he got cheap. However, Alf is loading up the ute and says he’s going on a fishing trip, being slightly cagey about where exactly he’s going. He has arranged for Leah and Ryder to look after the bait shop. John goes to the Diner and tells Marilyn, where they both agree some time alone might do him good. In fact, Alf is pulling into a car park in the bush where Martha is waiting: She has decided to do the trip he suggested, saying she feels safe with him. She has a small bag with her, having left the rest of her luggage in her car in the secure car park. They drive off together.
At their flat, Ziggy asks Brody about Ben’s plans for her birthday, wondering if he’ll get her a hot rod or a trip to Vegas. Brody says he needs to tell her something, but only says they’re not going to Vegas. Ziggy agrees they need to save for the deposit. She cuddles up to him. Next morning, Brody goes to Simone’s van: She is up early waiting for him. Brody admits he couldn’t tell Ziggy. Simone understands since they’ll be together eventually. They kiss and lie down on the bed. Back at the flat, Ziggy wakes up alone and assumes Brody’s gone to work.
Soon after, Marilyn is serving Ziggy at the Diner. Ben comes in and learns about Alf going away, saying there’s no sign of Dean again and he’s had it with him. Ziggy offers to check his van. She goes to the caravan park, but as she passes Simone’s van, she hears Brody and Simone inside, with Simone trying to get Brody to stay and Brody laughingly saying he needs to get to work. Ziggy pushes open the door to see Simone in bed and Brody sitting next to her with his shirt off.
