Ziggy tries and fails at playing cupid. Roo gets some disappointing news from Maggie. Ryder steps up to help Raffy with her assignment.
Extended Summary
Justin, Mason and Ziggy discuss Raffy being busy and Simone’s whereabouts. Ziggy is stunned when Justin mentions Simone went into her flat and heads over there. Simone apologises to Brody for touching his whites but Brody says he understands and gets her to try them on. Simone takes a selfie of the two of them which Ziggy walks in on. She asks Brody what it was about. Brody just thinks Simone’s ambitious. At Salt, Ryder joins Alf and Roo and asks what’s wrong. Alf checks if he’s done anything before Roo explains about the teaching post in the Kimberleys. Ryder thinks it’s amazing. Roo says it’ll be three months but Ryder is fine with her going.
Raffy is working on her assignment at the Diner. John and Marilyn slope over to check on her and see a book on the cold war: She says it’s going fine. Marilyn asks if she’s going to Mason’s barbecue but Raffy has already told him that she’s busy. After they’ve gone, she opens up the laptop: She has only written her name and the title. At the surf club, Alf, Roo and Ryder join Ben and Maggie, who are putting final touches on the counter. Roo takes Maggie aside and tells her about the teaching placement. Maggie muses on having to cover classes and says they’ll talk tomorrow. Raffy approaches Ryder at the juice bar and tells him she can’t do the assignment. Ryder says they’ll do it together before admitting he finished his yesterday.
Brody, Ziggy, Simone, Justin and Mason go back into the house. Ziggy tries to get Mason to walk Simone home and, when he points out she drove there, gets him to walk her to her car. Brody drags Ziggy out for a chat. Mason returns and asks Justin if Tori was okay and if he should have invited Robbo but Justin thinks she was fine. At the flat, Ziggy thinks Simone needs a social circle outside Brody. Brody says she just wants to work hard and he was the same when he was starting out. Ziggy thinks he’s encouraging her but Brody thinks Ziggy’s being ridiculous.
Simone is working on her own at Salt. She gets out her phone and looks at the photo of herself and Brody. Outside, Raffy chats to Ryder about how it was easier when she had Coco to help her. Ryder says she has until 9am to get it finished. Raffy thinks it’s unfair that Ryder has to do the work twice but Ryder says that’s what friends are for and promises no funny business.
Next morning, Alf and Roo are walking on the beach with Roo gushing about the placement: Most of the staff are bilingual and the classes are small. They see Ryder and wonder why he’s up so early: He says he has to finish off an assignment, which impresses them. He heads to school where he meets up with Raffy. Raffy has done a lot of research but says it’s just images and bullet points and she hasn’t done any writing. Ryder suggests she doesn’t need to: She can make a slide show out of what she’s got. Raffy warms to the idea as he says if her brain works differently now she should go with it.
Ziggy asks Mason what he’s doing for lunch, saying she wants to spend some time with her brother-in-law, but Justin suspects she has an agenda. Brody rushes through on his way to work and Ziggy drags Mason after him. They arrive at Salt where Simone tells Brody the first plates are ready and reveals she did the prep work last night. Ziggy says she’s entitled to a break in that case and invites her to join her and Mason, shooing Brody away when he tries to take their order. She then “remembers” that she’s meant to be helping Ben with his opening and leaves Mason and Simone alone. No-one is fooled.
Raffy finishes her new-look assignment and posts it off, with Ryder noting she did it with a minute to spare. Raffy thanks him for his help and they look at each other, having another moment which is interrupted by the school bell. Back at Salt, Mason and Simone discuss food options with Mason not finding the idea of turmeric pancake particularly appealing. Brody jokes about Mason’s lack of a discerning palette. Mason and Simone chat about Ziggy setting them up and agree neither of them wants to be on a date.
Ben is slightly bemused by Ziggy helping him out while John also chimes in with advice. Mason comes downstairs and Ziggy wonders what’s going on but he makes it clear her lame attempt at matchmaking didn’t work. He also says that he thinks Simone is nice and Ziggy should get to know her. Ziggy interprets this as keeping your enemies close. She heads upstairs where she suggests to Simone that they try and be friends. Justin and Brody look on; Brody is somewhat wary of the development but Justin thinks Ziggy’s making an effort.
Roo goes to see Maggie in her office where they discuss getting a substitute teacher in. Although a couple of candidates have been lined up, Maggie thinks it’s not going to work: Roo has committed to the year and the students, especially special cases like Raffy, need continuity. She says she’ll support her next year. They part, with Maggie looking uncomfortable and Roo looking disappointed. At the Diner, Marilyn, Justin and Ryder all offer Raffy encouragement over her assignment. Roo comes in and tells Raffy she was very impressed with it. Marilyn and Roo chat about Maggie refusing the placement. Marilyn suggests she might change her mind now Raffy is doing better.
Raffy and Ryder walk in a park area. Ryder congratulates her on doing well and Raffy says she couldn’t have done it without him. They kiss, then Raffy pulls away and runs off.
