Tori breaks the news to Beth and her family that if she doesn’t get a new heart soon she will die. Despite an initial blunder, Scarlett comes through for Brody in court. Brody rejects Ziggy’s suggestion that they stay friends.
Extended Summary
On the pier, Beth has just collapsed; Mason is reviving her and calls out to Justin and Scarlett who are nearby for help. Beth is rushed to hospital where Mason continues to give Beth CPR as he unwillingly lets the hospital staff take over. Beth’s parents arrive at the hospital and start to give Mason a hard time, blaming him for what has happened. Justin steps in and explains that Mason saved Beth’s life. When Beth’s parents are allowed in to see her Alan refuses to let Mason come, insists that they need to see their daughter alone. Mason is upset by this but gives them space and comes back to the hospital to see Beth the next morning instead. When Beth wakes up the next morning with her parents by her bedside she is upset when Mason isn’t there as well. Alan explains that he asked Mason to give them some privacy and Jackie adds that Beth can see Mason when she is better, but this only makes her more upset. Beth is over the moon to see Mason when he visits and refuses to let him leave when Alan asks if they can speak to the doctor privately; Mason is part of her life now. Tori breaks the news to Mason, Beth and her family that Beth’s heart is failing. There is a short-term solution but ultimately if Beth doesn’t get a heart transplant soon she will die. After hearing this news Beth and Mason have a moment together where Beth considers that maybe her parents are right; it isn’t fair on him, and she gives him an out if he wishes to take it. But Mason assures Beth that he isn’t going anywhere and is here for her.
Irene and Alf console Brody as he worries about his court case tomorrow; this could potentially be his final night of freedom. Scarlett assures Brody that they have done all they can; he’s pleading guilty and cooperating with police. Ziggy passes and as Brody makes an attempt to talk to her, she warns him to stay away from her. The next morning the Morgan’s rally together before Brody’s court case. Seeing how distressed Mason is, Brody insists that he go and see Beth instead. Justin convinces Tori to go with Mason, promising to be there for Brody in their absence. Justin tries to call Scarlett after she doesn’t turn up for their breakfast before court and eventually finds her meditating on the beach. She is trying to relax before court; visibly nervous about the fact that Brody’s freedom lies in her hands. Justin worries that Scarlett has been affected by the incident with Beth from the night before, but Scarlett assures him that she is feeling stronger than before. In court the prosecutor tears Brody to pieces, Scarlett tries to object but isn’t successful. The prosecutor argues that Brody is a criminal and a danger to the community and asks for a sentence of six years. Both Justin and Brody look at Scarlett in horror, who appears very much out of her depth. At the diner Irene warns Ziggy not to be too hard on Brody as it is his court day today; Ziggy having completely forgotten, hurries off to be there for him.
Ziggy arrives at the courthouse as Scarlett pleads Brody’s case; Scarlett touches on Brody’s willingness to change and points out how brave he has been. Ziggy watches on, her opinion of him changed. Justin congratulates Scarlett on doing a great job as they wait outside the courthouse for the verdict. Ziggy approaches Brody as they wait and apologises for being a jerk. Before the verdict is delivered Brody makes a touching speech in front of the judge, saying how sorry he is and that if it wasn’t for his family he wouldn’t be here today. Brody receives a suspended sentence for the time period of one year; meaning that if he doesn’t take drugs or commit any other crimes in the next 12 months he won’t have to go to jail. Everyone is incredibly relieved and head to Salt to celebrate. Ziggy asks Brody if they can go back to being friends. Although he would like to Brody suggests that perhaps it would be better if they just went their separate ways. Ziggy tries to hide how hurt she is by this and agrees. Justin goes to check on Scarlett who is standing by herself out on the balcony. She admits that she was just worried and stressed about letting Brody down and Justin thanks her again for doing a great job. Scarlett asks whether Justin would like to head back to her place with her and Justin agrees. But just as Justin and Scarlett are about to hook up there is a knock at the door. Scarlett answers when the knocking persists; horrified to find that it is her husband, Caleb.
