Extended Summary
Mason and Beth are lying on the sofa watching a movie (apparently involving Predators). Tori comes home and starts pacing in frustration before telling them she’s just been an idiot and disappearing into her room. Beth worries that it was because of her but Mason says she probably forgot her PIN number or messed up with a guy. Mason goes to kiss her but she reminds him of the rule that they can’t kiss until the first movie death. At the beach house, Olivia gets a notification of another sale. She tells Hunter she can get another dress out that night and he worries that she’s working too hard. Ash comes home with Luc; when they enquire about his date, he tells them not to ask.
Mason tries to get Beth to stay longer, offering to watch any movie she likes, even a rom com. Beth says she only watches rom coms if they’ve got explosions in them. She wonders about what Tori thinks of her being there and Mason asks what her parents think about him. Beth says they’re cool and think he’s nice but seems less than keen when he suggests meeting them. She is saved by a text saying her Uber has arrived and hurries out, where she leans against the wall, her expression suggesting mental anguish.
Next morning, Roo chats to Leah about her impending departure and the fact she’ll be a fully qualified teacher when she comes back. She also asks Leah to keep an eye on Alf. VJ emerges from the house and says he’s going to get study notes from Hunter. Leah worries he’s overdoing it and suggests he hangs out with an approaching Coco, who says she was taking a short cut from the bus stop (an excuse that seems to convince no-one). She offers to walk with VJ.
Ash is annoyed to find Olivia has Luc next to her when she’s sorting out her dress-making, saying she could have swallowed a button. He takes Luc and walks out. Olivia tells Hunter she was hoping to rope him into helping out since she promised despatch within a week. VJ and Coco turn up and Olivia immediately tries to recruit them for cutting the material for an hour or two, promising them free food and a free dress for Coco. Coco accepts and says VJ and Hunter can test each other while they work. VJ reluctantly assents. Meanwhile, Mason feeds Buddy and gets a text from Beth consisting of emojis of animals. Tori says that relationships aren’t easy: You start off liking someone and then you complicate it. Mason says that’s just how Tori does things and leaves.
Beth and a man, Alan, are drinking outside the surf club. Mason sees them and calls out to Beth but she doesn’t respond until she has steered Alan away, telling Mason he has to go and she’ll explain later. However, Alan returns quickly. Realising he’s Beth’s father, Mason introduces himself as her boyfriend. There’s an uncomfortable pause and Beth shouts “Surprise!” A short time later, Alan is on the phone some yards away. Mason worries that he looks angry but Beth says he always looks like that. She explains that her parents just treat her as a sick kid and want her to focus on getting better and have a life later. Mason asks why she didn’t say and she explains she didn’t want him to think he was a dirty little secret. Alan comes back and formally introduces himself to Mason. Beth apologises for not saying anything and Alan says he’s called Beth’s mother and suggests they all meet for brunch.
Olivia steers Raffy into the beach house; she’s been roped into helping out by Coco and also because she feels she owes Olivia over what happened at the launch. Hunter and VJ try asking each other History questions but Olivia snaps at them to focus. Hunter decides to go and get food; VJ tries to go with him but Olivia orders him to stay. At Salt, Mason and Beth meet Alan and his wife Jackie, who is introduced to Mason. They wonder how the pair met. Beth says Mason’s a medical student but Mason says when they met he was a patient at the hospital after being in a car crash with his brother. When Alan wonders if he was driving, Mason starts to say that Brody grabbed the wheel to get away from his old drug dealer, then sensibly shuts up.
Hunter runs into Ash on the beach, noting he escaped the sweat shop, and Ash says he’s left Luc with Irene because he has to go to work. He admits he kissed Tori despite theoretically being on a date with someone else, but says she didn’t respond so he’s going to leave it. At the Diner, Leah chides Tori for running away. Tori thinks she screws up every relationship she has but Leah advises her to tell Ash how she feels. Hunter overhears and says she’d better be quick. Ash is coming out of the surf when Tori approaches. He apologises but Tori says she wanted it too and kisses him…more than once.
Hunter arrives back with the food, although Raffy is disappointed there’s no salad, Coco doesn’t seem to want anything and Olivia is too busy to stop. She notices Coco looking at VJ, who explains he’s doing his best not to show any interest but doesn’t want to just tell her. Olivia says he might need to and it’s better than letting her think she has a chance. VJ calls Coco outside and tells her he’s not ready for a relationship and not the right guy for her anyway, since she needs someone fun. Coco claims she wasn’t interested anyway. VJ checks they can still be friends then heads off. Raffy watches through the window.
Later, Olivia breathes a sigh of relief that they’re nearly done, since she just needs to stitch all the pieces together. Hunter notes she should change the website to say despatched within two years. Raffy checks on Coco, who is comfort eating, and says she can talk to her about VJ. Coco says she knew he’d never be interested. She goes to the bathroom, locks the door, turns on the tap and then throws up. When she emerges, she says she has to get going. Olivia notes Coco and Raffy have earned their dresses and Raffy comments that she’ll get a different one to Marilyn. Then Olivia notices that the sleeves have been cut with the wrong pattern. She viciously berates Raffy, saying they’ve wasted $300 of material.
Ash and Tori come into Salt, bantering about sharing a coffee and a kiss. Tori sees Mason and the others and goes to introduce herself; Beth says Tori’s Head of Emergency so she’s safe at Mason’s house. Mason explains that Justin runs the local garage and Brody is the chef who designed the menu at Salt. Later, Alan notes they’re done and sends Beth and Jackie for a walk. After insisting on paying, he tells Mason that he can see he’s genuine but Beth doesn’t need the stress of a relationship. He orders him to stay away from her.
