Gareth was first seen when he visited Dean Silverman at the retreat where he and Matilda were receiving counselling. Matilda asked Dean who he was and he claimed Gareth was his brother and he’d visited to say his family weren’t ready to have him home yet. After Dean had followed Mattie to Summer Bay, he was seen on the phone to Gareth, claiming he wasn’t into that sort of thing anymore. Gareth then turned up and Lucas saw them arguing. Dean again claimed Gareth was his brother but Drew said Dean didn’t have a brother. Lucas followed Dean to a meeting with Gareth and saw them having an emotional conversation and then hugging and began to suspect they were actually a couple.

When Matilda asked him about what Lucas had seen, Dean said Gareth was a friend from boarding school who had a crush on him but claimed it wasn’t reciprocated. However, after he continued behaving oddly, he admitted they’d been together and that was what prompted his father to throw him out. Matilda persuaded him to talk to Gareth and the pair were reunited. Lucas and Matilda ran into the two boys at the surf club a few days later, where they revealed that Gareth had got a job in the city and they were moving there together.
