Extended Summary
Mason turns his back and counts down to zero but when he looks round Beth is still there and shouts “Boo!”. Mason insists it can’t be real. Beth says she knows she’s dead and it sucks. She adds that she misses him. Before they can talk much, Raffy comes in and asks Mason who he was talking to. Mason looks round, sees they’re alone and awkwardly admits that it was Beth. Later, Raffy brings Mason some hot chocolate on the veranda. Mason apologises for being weird and thinks he must have imagined it but Raffy is open to the idea. She says she used to be able to see an aura around people and suggests part of people lives on. She heads off to bed and Mason also goes to his room. He sits on the bed, looking somewhat expectant.
Caleb helps Scarlett up to the Diner flat. He wants to help her get settled in. Scarlett awkwardly says that he’s been amazing the last week. Caleb realises he’s smothering her and agrees to go but says he’ll be back for breakfast, promising they’ll have banana pancakes. Scarlett checks her phone; she has messaged Justin without reply. Downstairs, Brody is serving Justin. Justin gets a text from Scarlett saying she’s home and wondering where he is but tells Brody it’s no-one. John comments on the rather plain meal Brody is serving but Marilyn stops him adding to it.
Next morning, Justin and Brody run into each other outside the surf club and Brody comments on how weird John and Marilyn are being. Scarlett comes up and wonders where Justin’s been, saying he disappeared right after saving her life. Justin says he’s been looking after Mason and Brody explains about Beth’s death. After Brody’s gone, Scarlett asks if that’s all, feeling like Justin’s avoiding her. They head inside where Scarlett asks if it’s because of Caleb, adding that there’s nothing between them. Justin says they’re still married. Scarlett calls it a legality but seems uncertain when Justin asks if they’re getting a divorce. She asks if what happened at the cabin meant nothing and he insists otherwise but says he’s going to go.
Mason wakes up to find Beth lying next to him. She notes that he looks cute when he’s asleep. Mason is initially confused but then says that he tried to save her and couldn’t even go to her funeral. Beth says she understands why. Justin comes home and finds Raffy in the living area. She admits Mason’s talking to Beth but doesn’t agree that it’s weird. Justin wants to talk to him but Raffy says she’ll go for a walk with him later, thinking she makes a better grief counsellor. Despite Raffy’s advice, Justin puts his head around the door. Mason is upset that he made Beth go away and tells him to get out.
John goes into the Diner kitchen and encourages Brody to give a dish more pizazz. Marilyn shoos him out. Brody asks what’s going on and Marilyn explains about John’s bet with Irene. Brody is disgruntled at having to stick to plain recipes. Marilyn says it’s just until John loses the bet. Upstairs, Caleb turns up with breakfast as promised. Scarlett tries to send him away, saying it’s not a good time, but Caleb wins her over by reminding her how much she hates it when she has to reheat coffee.
Outside the Diner, Brody sees a couple leave without finishing their meal. He tastes it and complains to Justin, who has just arrived, about how bland it is. Justin tells him about Mason seeing Beth but Brody doesn’t find it weird, saying he’s had hallucinations of his own and they shouldn’t judge how Mason grieves. He asks about Scarlett. Justin says it was okay when her husband was some faceless guy but now he’s there Justin feels like he’s in the middle of a marriage. Up in the flat, Scarlett finishes eating and Caleb insists they do the newspaper quiz, an old ritual of theirs. They end up in a good-natured argument about whether a cucumber is a vegetable or a fruit, with Scarlett insisting the newspaper has it wrong.
Mason and Raffy walk along the headland. Raffy wonders why Beth is coming. Mason says he doesn’t want to let her go and there were so many things they wanted to do. He suddenly notices the bird he saw before nestled in a bush. Raffy asks if he thinks it’s Beth and Mason asks her to leave him. A few moments later, Beth is there. She tells him she’ll always be there in his heart. Mason says he wants her there with him but Beth says she has to go away and this was just a chance to say goodbye. She adds that they were happy together and he’ll have to do things for her. Mason says he loves her and lets go of her hands. The bird flies away.
John and Roo are eating at the Diner and chatting with Marilyn about Brody’s food. Roo agrees it’s bland and John complains that it’s costing him money. Brody decides it’s not worth him losing his reputation and gives John $50 himself. Meanwhile, Raffy checks on Mason in his room. Mason says he won’t see Beth again and has to go on. He confirms he’s going to finish his bucket list. Raffy asks if he wants to go for another walk but Mason wants to stay there for now.
Justin and Scarlett meet up on the beach. Justin says he’s reached his limit and thinks they never stood a chance. He says she wanted Caleb after the explosion and doesn’t want to be the other man. Scarlett summons Caleb to her flat and tells him she has feelings for someone else and needs him to give her space. Caleb is scornful at the idea of her having feelings for Justin. Scarlett tells him to go but instead Caleb kisses her and asks her to come home.
