Extended Summary

Scarlett heads out onto the balcony. Caleb follows her, jokingly wondering if the kiss was that good. He wants an answer from her, telling her that they work together. Scarlett says her life’s in Summer Bay now but Caleb doesn’t think she belongs there. Scarlett tells him to go. Meanwhile, Alf arrives home from fishing to find Ryder playing about with one of his rods. Ryder bombards him with a stream of questions, asking if he’s ever caught a shark or a dead body, until Alf leaves. Roo tells Ryder to tone it down and says it would help if he gave them Quinn’s number. She says Alf’s an understanding man if you’re honest with him.

At the Diner, Brody is presenting Irene, John and Marilyn with a posh dish that none of them can pronounce. Irene and Marilyn privately admit that no-one will want it but try and convince themselves that it’s no different to Chris changing things. Alf brings back his food: He ordered soup and has got peas in water, so asks for a cheese toastie and coffee. Roo turns up and tries to get Alf to go easy on Ryder. In the flat above, Scarlett texts Justin. Kat enters behind her and, thinking it’s Caleb, Scarlett tells her not to kiss her again. Kat is slightly bemused and explains she came home from work because she was feeling ill. Scarlett explains that Justin finished things and Caleb wants her back. When Kat asks if she wants to go, she doesn’t answer.

Justin runs into Ben down by the beach and they comment on the fact Justin can’t surf at the moment because of being on crutches. Ben says he’s sorry about what happened with Brody. Justin says if Brody can get past it so can he, adding that Brody didn’t want Ben charged. He ignores the text from Scarlett and Ben invites him for a beer. Back at the Diner flat, Scarlett complains that Caleb has turned everything on its head. She thinks things are done with Justin and doesn’t blame him. Kat suggests that maybe Justin was right. Scarlett says Caleb changed after Max died but now he’s back to how he used to be and admits he’s the only person who could get her to leave town.

Ryder runs into Coco at the Diner and compliments her on being able to pull off trackies. Even though she was going to the gym, she agrees to him buying her food. A customer angrily returns some pasta and Irene and Marilyn bemoan the fact that no-one is getting what they’ve ordered. Brody has the solution: He pins up a new menu over the old one. John points out that he told them so. Later, John orders a slice of chocolate cake only to find Brody’s put stout in it. Irene is forced to agree with John that Brody is going too far. When Brody is scornful about the Diner’s usual menu, Irene orders him out. Nearby, Ryder insists that Coco had a good time since her pupils are dilated. He convinces her to give him her number, handing her his phone.

At the farm house, Justin ignores a call from Scarlett and asks Ben what happened to the gazebo, saying he could help them finish it. He admits that things are over with Scarlett, having never been officially on in the first place. He says he wants a clean break but Ben points out that Scarlett’s still messaging him and suggests that since Justin’s had his say she might want hers. That evening, Justin meets Scarlett on a bench near the beach. She tells him he was right: She’s not ready to move on. She’s going back to her old life, which means leaving for Adelaide with Caleb in the morning. She adds that what she felt for Justin was real.

Alf gets a phone call at home: It’s Quinn, who confirms Ryder’s her son. Alf tells her he’s safe and makes arrangement. He starts to tell her it’s good to hear from her but she hangs up. Alf laments to Roo that he’d never have known he had a grandson if Ryder hadn’t turned up. He explains that Quinn saw a selfie Ryder had posted online of him outside the surf club. (It takes Roo a few beats to twig that that means Ryder does have a phone.) Quinn got a job singing on a cruise ship and Ryder was meant to be at boot camp. Ryder listens from the doorway as Alf explains Quinn wants him sent back there. Roo thinks he’ll just run away again and convinces Alf to let him stay with them. Ryder runs in to hug Alf and thank him. At the farm house, Coco’s phone rings. Ben notices it’s Ryder and Coco says to murder him. Ben answers it and says he’s heard about Ryder hassling Coco. He’s in the middle of threatening to rip off something if Ryder comes near her again when Ryder hangs up. Ben and Coco laugh.

Brody returns to the Diner and apologises to Irene and Marilyn for being a bit over the top. John suggests it was his fault for pushing him. Irene says Brody’s still got a job and they might be able to compromise on updating the menu. Next morning, Kat and Scarlett come from the flat with Scarlett’s bags packed. Kat comments on all her housemates leaving. Scarlett notes Kat still isn’t well and sends her back inside after saying she’ll miss her. Brody gives Scarlett a goodbye hug. Justin tells Caleb to look after her and shakes his hand. Alf calls Brody over to the car to give Justin and Scarlett some space. Justin says it was fun while it lasted but she’s made the right choice and to be happy; they hug goodbye. Scarlett thanks Alf before she and Caleb drive off.

Alf and Brody head into the Diner. Alf notes they should be happy if Scarlett is and, when Brody wonders if she will be, opines that she will. Irene and Marilyn are putting out a board with the new menu. Alf and John remind Brody not to be too fancy but John is impressed by Brody’s first special: The John Palmergiana. And upstairs, Kat takes out a pregnancy test and looks distressed…
