I never intentionally mean to stop on a cliffhanger it's just it always seems like the perfect place to end a chapter. Hope you're enjoying it.

----------------------------------

Heath threw himself behind the car as numerous shots penetrated the front of the house splintering the framework. He cursed as further shots sounded out and forced him to position himself further down on the floor. He heard the shattering of glass as bullets pierced the windscreen of the patrol car inches away from him. Lying flat upon the ground he searched for any sign of Charlie underneath the vehicle.

“Buckton.”

Registering the sound of her name being called she kicked the side of the patrol car loudly with her foot in an attempt to motion to him that she had yet to be shot in the head. Relaxing momentarily he could hear the sound of his brother screaming at Cheryl to get out the back from inside the property. Sliding along the floor and beckoning for Charlie to turn around he motioned to her to keep quiet. Grimacing she couldn’t help but laugh to herself. What did he think she was going to do? The shots had stopped but the unmistakable sound of an engine was still audible. The car was still there. He glanced across at the front door where Brax had now appeared momentarily before being forced to retreat back quickly. Cursing loudly as a shot narrowly missed his position, instead making contact with the front window, he punched the porch wall furiously as he contemplated what to do. Taking shelter below his current position he ran his fingers through his hair in an effort to force himself to think. Slowly raising himself up, he carefully looked through the window before ducking back down hastily. He could see Heath but no Charlie. Where was she?

Charlie meanwhile glanced underneath the car at the position of her radio some fifty feet away from her. Perfect. It must have dropped from its holding when she had thrown herself on the ground. Cursing herself she outstretched her arm in an effort to reach it but suddenly found herself retreating. It was too far away. She contemplated what to do. They were desperately in need of backup but reaching the radio would require her moving to the other side of the vehicle and therefore placing herself directly in the line of fire. Catching sight of where her attention was directed Heath shot her a warning look. “Don’t be an idiot Buckton.” Shaking his head and quickly trying to think of how to get out of this situation his thoughts were interrupted by the sound of his brother shouting his name from inside the house. Answering him quickly he motioned for Charlie to focus upon him. Her heart was beating out of her chest and she suddenly became all too aware of how difficult she was finding it to breath. Lifting herself up from the floor slightly she grimaced. Grasping at her chest she suddenly became aware of the familiar texture of something soaking through her shirt from the position of her abdomen. She hadn’t felt a thing. Opening her mouth to speak she hesitated and observed as Heath slowly registered what had only just become apparent to her. She had been shot. Placing her hand firmly across where blood was now worryingly seeping out of her side she bit her lip in an effort to stop herself from screaming out in pain.

Taking short deep breaths she glanced across at Heath who, for the first time in his life, looked like he was visibly about to throw up. He didn’t know what to do. Screaming out to his brother would alert the car to the fact that they had been successful but now, glancing across at her attempts to shield the panic from her face, he knew he didn’t have much choice. Remaining fixed to their position he held his hands up to her imploring her to take deep breaths before shouting across to his brother.

“Mate, your girlfriend needs some help out here!”

Registering what his brother was indicating Brax yelled for his Mother to ring an ambulance as he readjusted his position on the floor. Questioning Heath as to how she was he banged his head against the wall violently in an effort to structure some kind of plan in his brain. His instinct told him to get up and risk it but his head confirmed to him that he was likely to be shot straight off. He cared little for this piece of detail aside from the fact that his brother and Charlie would still be boxed in at their current position. He had to be smart.

Heath, in the meantime, had decided to risk it and moved forward quickly to Charlie’s current position. Lifting her up gently, he laid her back against the tyre of his car and pushed her hair back from her face. Lifting her chin up so as she was on eye level with him he couldn’t help but register how drastically pale she had become. Perspiration was seeping through her skin and her breathing was becoming increasingly more erratic by the second. Placing his hand on her neck he rubbed her chin with the palm of his hand gently. “Jesus Buckton. You owe me one after this.” She smiled slightly at his attempt to lighten the atmosphere before grimacing as he attempted to place an arm below her body. Shaking her head and sensing what he was attempting to do she pleaded with him not to go there. “Don’t.” Smiling across at her he pulled her towards him as his fingers grasped at her legs from underneath her body as he lifted her up ever so slightly. “Try not to get too excited Buckton. I know how long you’ve been waiting for this.” Pulling her towards him he positioned her on top of his knees as he guided her hands towards his neck before shouting out to his brother to ‘check under the sofa you idiot.” Impatiently he waited as he moved strands of hair away from her face. She was soaked through. Frowning down at her he shook her gently before addressing her rather more harshly than he’d intended. “Don’t even think about dying on me Buckton. Your fella’ will kill me in there.” He signalled to the house where Brax had now shouted in their direction.

Glancing down at her he repositioned her on his lap before moving his feet slowly. “You ready for this?” Shouting at his brother to go for it she watched as Heath stood up hauling her across the pathway as shots rang out from the direction of the house. Desperately trying to stay awake she observed the fact that the bullets where no longer being aimed in their direction. Brax was shooting at them. Clearly realising that they no longer had the joy of the upper hand she listened as the vehicle attempted to accelerate furiously before it sped off screeching down the road. Moving past Brax who was still intent upon firing madly in the direction the car had just taken Heath carried Charlie into the house before placing her down on the couch.

Shoving his brother out of the way impatiently, Brax took Charlie’s hand in his placing the other in the crook of her neck. Disregarding the fact that his mother had now re-entered the room screaming at Heath as to what the bloody hell had just happened he stroked her cheek dotingly as he addressed her sharply; ‘Charlie, Charlie look at me.” She was desperately attempting to regulate her breathing as he lifted her chin up maintaining that she was on the same eye level with him. Panting violently she tried to keep her eyes focused upon his face in front of her. “Baby, you’re going to be fine. I promise you.” Attempting to reassure him that she believed what he was saying she struggled to gather the strength to smile at him as she became conscious of how heavy her head had become.

Cheryl, meanwhile, was staring curiously across at her son's position in front of her as it suddenly dawned upon her as to what everybody else had known for a long time. Heath paced up and down the room with his phone clasped at his ear before shouting irately at the person on the other end of the receiver. Losing power in her muscles Charlie felt herself slouch back slowly as Brax grasped at the back of her neck in an effort to keep her focused upon him. “Charlie, sweetheart, stay awake. Look at me!” Squeezing her hand tighter and placing his lips upon the crown of her head all she heard before she passed out was him screaming at his mother to find the ambulance.
