Part One

The library was pretty dead as it normally was on a Friday night, but Dex didn’t care, he would rather be in a library pretending to understand algebra where a certain amount of x’s equals a rather odd amount of y’s than be in a house where George spent the whole time crying.

Whoever said that babies were a bundle of joy never met George, Dex thought wryly to himself as the clock ticked to 6pm. He didn’t normally check the time but he was rapidly losing interest. He closed his book and he watched the rain crashing again the window.

He knew that he should be going home especially since he could sense that a storm was on the way but he decided against it. He opened his physics books. He was again struggling to muster up any enthusiasm to figure out anything about forces, he was meant to be having a pop quiz according to rumours from his ‘peers’ as he called them. He rarely socialised with them, half of the time he just ignored them.

He viewed most of them as apes whose sole reason for existing was just to reproduce more baby apes and allow the earth to function. A few moments later his train of thoughts was disturbed as thunder shook the library, most people didn’t actually jump but Dex did. Maybe it was because he didn’t expect it, normally he knew when the rain was going to hit but in this case, he had no idea it was going to hit.

It shook him up for a few moments, no one else had noticed but he saw some writing flash on the wall before him and he had a weird sense of déjà vu. The words flashed again as the thunder hit, getting slightly darker every time it hit.

He was willing the thunder to hit again, his curiosity had been piqued and he wanted, no scratch that he thought, he needed to know what it all meant. Dex knew that he had seen it before but he was struggling to place it. His mind was trying to figure out where he had and also willing the thunder to return, suffice to say, it was painful for his brain but his curiosity took precedence over his pain.

Dex got his wish only a few moments later but this time along with the thunder, lightning struck. The words flashed brightly and then once the thunder had passed, the words stayed on the wall. He looked around to see if anyone else was looking at the wall. He had a bemused expression on his face as no one else seemed to be looking. He moved to a computer and logged in. He opened Google and typed in the numbers and characters. The search engine came up with several links, most of them looked to be normal websites and so then he decided to add in the words ‘thunder and lightning’ into the search bar, it came up with several more interesting links. He clicked on and gasped. The main heading was the same as the algebra equation he had just spent a hell of long time trying to figure out.

He moved down the pages and came across another equation that he remembered reading and investigating a few days before. He vaguely recalled writing it down and stuffing it in his pillowcase, he always thought that if he left confusing puzzles in his pillowcase, then maybe his mind whilst he was sleeping would be able to decipher it for him. He had to admit that it had not happened yet but he was not giving up yet, he was not the type to give up on the first hurdle, it was too much like giving and failure, and Dex was no quitter, no sire, he thought, I always plough on. He smiled at his own thoughts. He didn’t need anyone else to make me laugh or smile; his brain did enough of that for himself.

Dex decides about 10 minutes after a few failed attempts of finding out what the equation or the message as Dex referred to it as. He looked to the wall but the text had gone along with the thunder and lightning, the rain had seemed to calm down as well.

He thought to himself, maybe I was imagining things, I could have been seeing things, but then the equation in the book and the website are too much of a coincidence for me to ignore, I better go and try and find the second part. I need to find an answer.

He picked his things up in a hurry, logged out of the computer and made his way home frantically; he could sense that the storm was going to return with a vengeance and he had to find an answer, no other puzzle had ever piqued his curiosity as much as this did.

Back at the farmhouse

Dex walked in, he could see Indi lounging about on the sofa on her laptop, though he didn’t know what she was doing, he didn’t care.

‘You want some food?’ Indi asked as she spotted him.

Dex was not sure if he should eat or not, he never normally said no and he didn’t want to make Indi or his father for that matter suspicious. He opted to eat, so that when he finally did manage to get in his room, it was not going to raise any eyebrows, but then again, everything that Dex did raised eyebrows, he was never going to conform, where was the fun in that?

‘Ah that was nice’ Dex said as he finished the meal.

Sid yawned ‘I need an early night, Indi, wash & Dex, dry’ he mumbled sleepily as he walked to the bedroom.

Dex groaned ‘Great, the dishes’

Indi smiled ‘The quicker we do it, the quicker I can go to bed’

‘It’s only 9pm’ Dex pointed out, but he was not sure why he even cared that his family was heading to bed. His father was always sleeping early since Marilyn left, and Indi spent her life talking to Romeo. He was past caring if they were on or not.

About thirty minutes later

‘Done’ Indi said as she finished wiping the table down. ‘I am off to sleep’

Dex didnt respond, he was trying to hard not to run into his room and find the piece of paper. the storm was back with a vengeance, Dex however had no time to care, as soon as he heard Indi’s door closed, he went as slowly and quietly as he could which was quite hard especially since his curiosity was kind of taking over.

He went to the place where he remembered putting the piece of paper but to his surprise, it was not there. He threw the duvet cover on the floor and began to take the pillowcases apart just so he could find this piece of paper. Why was it that he ended up with the puzzles, but then again, he doubted a floozy like Ruby or a douche like Romeo would actually be able to put the two equations together, they were too engrossed in their sad little lives.

‘Hallelujah’ he muttered as he found it, under his laptop on the dresser, he could have sworn that he had looked there. He shook away his confusion and made his way to his desk. He opened the equation and spent about 20 minutes deciphering the words.

For some reason, it was in Morse code. He used his knowledge to decipher it and came up with the words. ‘DESTRUCTION’ he frowned but then he looked at the second equation. He came up blank when he tried to decrypt it, it was strange, and the first clue had been pretty easy. Well easy according to Dex’s standard.

‘Urgh come on brain! Figure it out!’ he muttered annoyingly to himself. He knew talking to yourself was the first sign of madness, but this clue was taking too long for him to figure out.

The clock ticked over to 11.53pm. He looked at the clue, blinked and then looked at it again; he turned it diagonally and smiled. It read 2012, SB.

‘So, Destruction, 2012, SB’ he muttered to himself. He knew that 2012 was rumoured to be the end of the world.

‘Wow’

He tried to find his camera, he needed to record this and post it up to his blog. It might just enhance his loser status in the ‘real’ world but he was past caring about that.

‘So this is Private Dex speaking, the strangest thing happened today.’

A camera shot of the first equation is shown. Dex explains the workings out and then he says ‘DESTRUCTION’

‘It is defined as the concept of damage to an object, system, or being. It may apply either as a measurable degree of damage up to and including a state beyond use or repair, or it may indicate a state wherein such damage is occurring and continuing. Something 'being destroyed' is in a 'state of destruction’ he rabbits on.

‘Here is the second clue, the evidence speaks for itself, I will let you all decide what it means….’ He deliberately stops speaking and allows the room to be filled with thunder and lightning, perfect ambience noise for his blog.

He opens his laptop and turns it off. Dex cannot wait to upload this and see what responses he gets. He manages to get onto the server to upload it, he connects the data cables to upload it.

….15% uploaded, estimated remaining time 5 minutes

Dex leaves it to upload, when he returns five minutes later, he sees the file waiting to be uploaded, normally he would edit it but he was too excited this time around.

He smiles but then his smile disappears as the low battery symbol starts flashing, he crashes around his room trying to find it. Once he found it, he gets the laptop ready to move towards the plug. He connects the cable to the computer. He presses upload to the blog and as soon as he pressed enter and switches on the plug, the computer fades to black. The plug starts spitting out sparks.

Dex is still in too much shock to actually register what had just happened. He slowly opens the camera and tries to find the recording, for a second dread takes over but then he realises he still has the papers. His eyes flicker down the plug and he realises that the papers have been burnt; there was no trace of his research…

He allows himself to get under the covers, he spent a few hours working out that the end of the bay imminent and now he had no evidence to back up his claims. All that energy and time was for nothing. He closed his eyes yet again managing to convince himself that it was all a dream and that when he woke up in the morning, he would be back to his normal quirky self. Yep, he thought, back to my normal self.

Well, you know exactly what I think.

It was awesome :)

Loved the portrayal of Dex. Amazing.

& it feels weird not saying 'I look forward to the next chapter' seeing as I am responsible for it

Love Carina xxx

ooh, mysterious. I like Dex being the main, or at least the first, character. And some old characters coming back from the past. Looking forward to the next intriguing chapter....!

Very mysterious indeed. Can't wait to see where this goes.

I feel sorry for Dex, there's nothing worse than working on a Maths problem for hours, to have it destroyed in seconds!

This has certainly got me hooked.

Please update soon! :)
