PART 15

“What’s taking them so long?”

Chris looks at the door where people disappeared with Kate over and hour ago and suddenly turns to Paul, grabbing his collar and violently pushing him against the wall.

“If Kate dies, I will kill you. I swear, Paul O’Brien I will kill you with my bare hands.”

Paul pushes Chris back.

“It’s not my fault, Chris! I didn’t tell her to walk off!”

“You just as well could have.”

Chris glares at Paul and gives him one last push before returning to his chair, waiting with his hands in his hair.

“Where is she?”

Chris looks up when Ray enters the hospital, followed by Ada, Tim, Nic, Amy, Jessica, Mark, Rhys, Indiana, Sharni, Ian and Lynne.

Chris looks at Ray, tears in his eyes.

“I don’t know… I don’t know anything…”

Ada sits down next to Chris, putting her arms around his shoulder.

“Are you okay?”

Chris shakes his head.

“I keep thinking that I might lose her… and it’s driving me crazy. I love her so much, Ada! And what about Hayden? He can’t lose his mum! I need her, Ada... I love her!”

“I know you do…”

Ada takes his hand, looking at him seriously.

“Look, Chris… you have to believe that she’ll get out of this. She’s a fighter.”

Chris shakes his head, his voice breaking.

“I don’t even know for how long she was lying there before I found her… She was lying there… full of blood…”

A raw sob rips from his chest and he presses his face against Ada’s shoulder.

“I love her more than anything Ada! More than life itself…”

Mark sits down on the other side of Chris and looks at Paul.

“Did anyone let Jodi know?”

Chris looks up angrily.

“Why? So she can celebrate?”

Paul looks up, his eyes shooting daggers at Chris.

“That’s not fair!”

“Isn’t it? Jodi achieved what she wanted to, didn’t she?”

Paul looks down again, shaking his head.

“This is not what Jodi wanted.”

“Tell that to someone who believes you.”

“I actually wouldn’t think twice about killing her the way I feel now. It’s like I’m projecting all my anger about this onto her.”

Jodi looks at Tasha sadly.

“That’s terrible, isn’t it?”

“No. It’s not. I know you feel like that now, but you wouldn’t really have the heart to do it.”

“It scares me… I think I would. She seduced my husband. She kissed him. That’s all I can think about…”

Tasha and Jodi both look up when Becky arrives, pale as a sheet.

Tasha stands up, taking Becky’s arm.

“Becky? What’s going on?”

Becky sits down, still shaking. She looks at Jodi, biting her lip.

“I just got off the phone with your husband.”

Jodi frowns.

“What happened?”

“It’s Kate… She’s been shot. They’re all at the hospital, they don’t know if she’s going to make it…”

“I want to go to the hospital…”

Becky nods.

“I’ll go tellMaria and Peter… I’m sure they’ll understand…”

“This is horrible… who would do something like this? And they didn’t even take anything?”

Amy looks at Chris confused and he shakes his head.

“It’s like they shot her for the fun of it…”

He looks up when he hears footsteps and his face whitens when he notices Jodi standing a few steps away from him.

“You…”

She walks closer carefully.

“Chris…”

“What are you doing here?”

“Kate’s my friend…”

Chris shakes his head.

“Yeah. And you’re the one who let her run off. Because you were mad at her because your husband kissed her. Did he tell you that? Did he tell you that he told her he has feelings for her and she told him to go to you? Did he? Some friend you are. You could have shot her yourself. That’s what it comes down to.”
