Extended Summary

Eden walks along the beach. She gets out her phone and plays the music video of Lyrik singing Someone Like You, smiling to herself. At the studio, Kirby wonders what Avalon was playing at as Remi tries to get things on track. Kirby says Avalon doesn’t write her own songs and wonders about informing Justin. Eden suddenly turns up and says she changed her mind about singing back up vocals. Kirby celebrates and she and Eden practice singing together with Eden making up her own part to Remi’s frustration. Avalon comes in while they’re singing and tells Remi she’ll talk to him later.

Outside the surf club, an enthusiastic Abigail tells Alf it’s her birthday. Levi asks whose idea it was to take her out in public and Mackenzie asks whose idea it was to take her to her restaurant. Levi notes he thought she’d have grown out of it by now, as Abigail also shares the news with John on her way in. They meet up with Mali, and Levi and Abigail reflect on it being a long time since they celebrated a birthday together. Mali says he’ll join them upstairs for brunch after a lesson. After the others have gone, Mackenzie concludes Mali has Abigail’s present hidden behind the board shop. He shows her a rather abstract painting of Abigail, saying he’s going to give it to her when it’s just the two of them.

Upstairs, Mackenzie has laid out a lavish meal for herself, Levi and Abigail. Abigail asks Levi about the day she was born. Levi says she was wrinkly and jaundiced but when he held her she was kind of cute. Mackenzie looks reflective as Abigail gets a call from Debra. Levi follows her out onto the balcony where she is checking to see if she’s got her fertility results. Levi tells her to be patient. Abigail comes out and asks when Eden’s getting there. Levi suggests they just eat, then, after Abigail’s gone, admits he forgot to tell her. At the studio, Eden is recording her track. Remi and Kirby ask for one more take but then she gets the call from Levi. She assures him she hasn’t forgotten and is on her way, then tells the others she has to go and is the worst sister in the world.

Abigail tells Levi she’s received a text from their dad, who says he has to spoil her rotten. She notes he’s texted her on her birthday without fail for the last ten years but this is the first time she’s texted them back. Mali joins them as Mackenzie presents Abigail with her present: A key ring, which she tries not to look underwhelmed about. Levi quietly asks Mackenzie to stall while he gets the cake.

At the studio, Remi and Kirby try to convince Eden to stay and finish the track but Eden says this is the first time in a decade she gets to celebrate Abigail’s birthday with her and Levi. Kirby agrees. Avalon comes in and compliments Eden on her singing. Kirby is furious that Avalon was listening to them. She decides to go with Eden, telling Remi to sort Avalon out.

Outside the surf club, Kirby talks to a distracted Eden about how Avalon doesn’t write her own songs. She turns down an offer to join them upstairs, saying to say happy birthday to Abby for her. Eden apologises for ending the session. Kirby says it was Avalon that blew it…before admitting it was a bit her and deciding to call Remi.

Remi’s phone rings unnoticed as Remi accuses Avalon of putting them behind schedule. Avalon says Eden was already leaving but Remi thinks Avalon annoyed Kirby. Avalon says she’ll leave Kirby alone if Remi agrees to play on her album. She looked at the paperwork earlier and knows he isn’t playing on Kirby’s. Remi says he doesn’t want to do session work. Avalon says he’d be a featured artist. She plays one of her songs and hands Remi his guitar. He is soon playing along to it.

Remi arrives home and Kirby says she understands why he didn’t pick up. Remi says he didn’t even look at his phone and Kirby apologises. Remi assures her Avalon isn’t stealing her songs and asks if they can move some of the schedule around. At Salt, Eden takes Levi aside and asks if she can go halves with his present for Abigail. Levi agrees and suggests they give it to her now.

Abigail, Eden, Mali, John, Levi and Mackenzie stare at the present in varying degrees of open-mouthed shock as Levi announces it’s from him, Mackenzie and Eden: A car. Alf compliments them on it as John tries to point out it’s parked in an emegency vehicle area. Mali looks crestfallen and asks Mackenzie how he can compete with that.

Back in Salt, Mackenzie tries to convince Mali that Abigail will appreciate his portrait and the effort he put into it but Mali thinks it’s worth nothing. Eden, Levi and Abigail come up, with Levi deciding to have the cake at home. Eden has to work and Mali announces he does too. Eden quietly asks Levi if they could split the cost 80/20 rather than 50/50, since she doesn’t earn as much as a heart surgeon. Levi assures her he never expected her to pay anything. Eden asks what happened to her car. Levi says Justin bought her one and she says she has to share it with three other people.

Levi, Mackenzie and Abigail arrive home. Abigail has loved having the wind in her hair despite Levi saying she doesn’t have to have the windows down because they have air conditioning. Abigail goes off to look for Mali’s present. Mackenzie admits to Levi that she doesn’t think Mali is going to give the present to her and they should have given him a heads-up about the car. She then gets a text saying that the results are in but admits she’s not sure she wants to know.
