Episode 8262

Extended Summary

Mackenzie and Felicity make their way through the film crew, not realising until the last moment that they’re next to each other. Both of them are confused by Xander summoning them in for a team meeting. Felicity says that since she’s not rostered on, she will go and Mackenzie can send her an e-mail, but Mackenzie points out that Xander wanted them both there.

Up in Salt, Xander complains to Mali that if he’d known about Mackenzie and Levi earlier he’d have handled things differently. Mali says he thought everyone knew. Mackenzie and Felicity turn up and Mali collects his order and leaves. Xander says neither of the pair have been there lately and he’s had three casuals take the night off because they think the bosses don’t care. Mackenzie and Felicity both awkwardly agree to stay and help out.

Downstairs, Kirby is on the phone, apparently to the guy whose number she took. Alf wanders through as Mali unsuccessfully tries to get Kirby to hang up and work. At the coffee cart, Roo ends a call and tells Marilyn that they’re having to turn people away at the caravan park. She has also been talking to Sonia about Tane’s court case and says that, while she doesn’t agree with what he did, she doesn’t want him to go to jail. John turns up, commenting on how far away he had to park because of the film crew. He presents Justin with his marriage certificate and calls out to Leah but Justin shushes him, since he’s preparing a surprise. He asks Leah when she’ll finish and she snappily says when the film crew are gone.

Mackenzie suggests to Felicity that they get the license renewal sorted while they’re both there but Felicity puts it off. Kirby comes up and Xander admits it’s like watching two funnel webs in a jar. Kirby doesn’t think them being the bosses is a problem, saying she gets on with Mali. Downstairs, Alf summons Mali into the office to give him some advice on Kirby, saying he’s the captain of the ship and he can’t let the crew make the rules. Mali notes he’s never had a crew before. Alf says he needs to let his crew know where the lines are before he can say they’ve crossed them.

Xander tries to make small-talk with Mackenzie about Levi. Felicity wanders into earshot and comments that Mackenzie isn’t interested in justifying her decisions to anyone. Xander apologises to Mackenzie. At the coffee cart, Roo tells Marilyn she’s thinking of going to court to support Tane but knows he’d tell her not to bother if she asked him. Marilyn suggests asking his friends what they’re doing. Justin turns up and asks Leah if she’s nearly finished but Leah reiterates that she’s flat out and half-seriously says she might sleep at the Diner given she’s going to have to be there early again next morning.

Mackenzie again tries to get the license renewal sorted but Felicity says it can wait until they close. Roo turns up and asks how Tane’s doing. Felicity looks awkward as Mackenzie says he’s trying to stay positive but knows the odd are against him. Roo asks if anyone is going to support him. Xander says Harper and Dana are going…but only because they’re testifying against him.

Later, Mackenzie says Felicity was obviously worried about Tane and shouldn’t blame herself, noting she obviously feels guilty about what happened with the baby. Xander unsuccessfully tries to cut in as Felicity accuses Mackenzie of trying to make herself feel better and says destroying someone else’s marriage isn’t the same thing.

Marilyn comes to the Diner and offers to cover for Leah, suggesting she go home to Justin and she was a bit short with him. Leah agrees she was but thinks he’ll have forgotten about it. Outside the surf club, Kirby is hosing down boards. Mali approaches and she playfully splashes him. Mali says he was about to talk about respect in the workplace. Falteringly, he notes that the workplace is like a ship, there can only be one captain and the crew can’t do whatever they want. He asks if she’d act like this if someone else was her boss. Kirby says she wouldn’t do it for anyone else and is doing him a favour, walking off.

Xander approaches Mackenzie on the balcony and asks if she’s okay. Mackenzie says this makes a nice change from people telling her how horrible she is. She says she thought her friends would try and see her point of view and maybe they’re not her friends. Felicity sees Xander put his arm round Mackenzie and doesn’t look happy.

At the Diner, Marilyn suggests Leah go home now they’ve quietened down and puts her phone on charge so Justin can call her. John comes in and mentions the marriage certificate and Justin’s surprise. Leah realises this is why Marilyn was trying to get rid of her and hurries off. John says he’s saved the day again. Marilyn is unimpressed.

Mali goes to see Kirby at home and says it’s up to him whether the business sinks or swims. Kirby says they’ve had enough boating metaphors. Mali says he’s doing her a favour too, by giving her a job when she was at a loose end. Kirby says she won’t date the student, mainly because he was boring. Mali says if it went wrong, the guy could badmouth them. Kirby starts to understand as Mali explains he’s doing something he loves, like her with music. She asks what other non-negotiables there are.

Justin has set up the table for a romantic meal, with a framed copy of the wedding certificate. Leah arrives back and Justin, showing her the certificate, says she can’t get rid of him now. Leah says that goes both ways and apologises for being late. Justin says he’d have waited all night.

Felicity sees Xander and Mackenzie making pleasant talk and accuses Xander of taking her side. Mackenzie steps in, saying Xander was just being a friend and Felicity has obviously forgotten what that looks like. Xander snaps at them to shut up and storms out. Mackenzie and Felicity follow him downstairs and he says he’s going home. They both say he can’t walk out mid-shift. Xander comments on them finally agreeing on something, saying they’ve been at each other’s throats since they got there. Felicity says he can’t talk to them like that. Xander asks if they’re going to fire him before snapping that he quits.

Alf arrives at the Diner and notes Xander getting a takeaway there instead of eating at Salt. Xander gets a text from Felicity which he ignores. Marilyn chats to Alf, who suggests the crew have gone home because of their five o’clock start, before awkwardly adding that it helps to keep on top of things. At Salt, Felicity and Mackenzie continue to bicker as they try and run the place together. Felicity blames Mackenzie for Xander walking out, while Mackenzie says it was because Felicity tried to make him choose sides. Felicity calls him their best barman. Mackenzie thinks he’ll be back but Felicity says he isn’t answering her texts or calls. She frantically starts texting again.
