Extended Summary

Kirby and Remi are round the back of the house; Remi plays a tune and Kirby hands him some lyrics she’s written and then adds to, saying it’s good to be doing this again. Remi notices his missed call from Bree and listens to her message, telling Kirby he has to go meet her. Kirby jokes about writing a song about mates ditching you for their girlfriends.

At the hospital, Bree gives Levi an update on Mackenzie’s physical and mental well-being and he notes he likes to check on his patients personally. Remi turns up, the first time Levi’s seen him since he came to town, and reveals he’s there for his girlfriend. Levi is surprised to learn he means Bree. Remi asks Bree about her message and she says she clocks off soon.

John puts up a notice advertising his school on the surf club notice board and tells Alf it’s a community board. Alf takes it down anyway, saying there’s no point offering a service the surf club already offers. John points out he can’t do it at the surf club. Alf says if John admits he wants his job back, he’ll fight to get his teaching privileges reinstated. John does so. Later, after telling John to get rid of the flyers, Alf asks him about his history with Simon Henderson. John says he’s only met him once or twice and hasn’t done anything except insult Banjo, which he’s already apologised for. Alf decides to give him a ring.

Mackenzie is sat nervously in her bed when Levi turns up. He tells her she’s doing well but Mackenzie is still fixated on the cardiac monitor. Levi disconnects it, saying she doesn’t need it anymore. He assures her that she’s through the worst of it. At the coffee cart, Irene finishes a phone call with Justin and tells Marilyn about Leah going to the clinic. Xander turns up, having the day off, and says he’s going to go visit Mackenzie in hospital. Kirby comes along while he’s talking and asks to go with him.

Remi and Bree walk along the beach. Bree asks if he ever thinks about what happened a year ago. Remi says he tries not to but it’s obvious Jacob’s on her mind. She notes she was with him for seven years and it’s like he never existed. At the hospital, Xander and Kirby check in on Mackenzie, who is gripping tightly onto her buzzer. Xander comments on the cardiac monitor being gone and Mackenzie says they took it a few minutes ago. Levi comes in and Kirby enthusiastically greets him. Mackenzie is bemused until she’s told he’s Eden’s brother, which Levi assumed she already knew. After he’s gone, Kirby notes she had a huge crush on him back in the day. Xander drily says they’d never have known.

Alf tells John that Simon has agreed to meet with him. John thinks he should be there to put his case across. Alf says they went over that with the committee. John suggests it would have helped if he’d spoken then but agrees to back off. After a moment, he turns back and thanks Alf, who warns him not to get ahead of himself.

Outside the Lyrik house, Remi suggests to Bree this is a chance to let go. Kirby turns up and tells them about seeing Levi. Remi notes it’s not exactly news that he’s in town. Bree leaves and Kirby tries to argue to Remi that Levi was always good to her and just wanted to stay in touch with his father. She says they don’t hold grudges like Eden does but Remi’s too scared to disagree with her.

Simon meets Alf at Salt, saying he was intrigued by Alf’s message. Alf explains he wanted to talk about all the strife with John. Simon says he’ll need a drink. Down on the beach, John is helping Irene carry things from the coffee cart and wonders how Alf and Simon are going. He thinks he shouldn’t have been left out but Irene points out he can be his own worst enemy sometimes. John admits he can’t imagine not doing his job again.

Alf argues that it’s not right for the club to lose John as a teacher and Banjo’s accepted his apology. Simon says Banjo needs to know Simon has his back. Alf wonders how they get on and Simon admits they don’t see much of each other these days. Alf thinks Simon is using this to earn brownie points with him. He says he’s overruling the committee and reinstating John. Simon warns there’ll be consequences. Alf goes downstairs and literally nearly bumps into John. He tells him it went in his favour and he’s reinstated with teaching responsibilities. John doesn’t notice Simon making his exit, glaring at Alf.

Levi has been summoned by Mackenzie, who insists she doesn’t feel right. Levi checks her and says she’s making excellent progress. Xander arrives with food as Levi leaves and recalls that he didn’t feel right when he was in hospital but says she’ll feel fine like he did once she gets home. Levi listens in. Meanwhile, Bree and Remi are eating at Salt. Bree says she’s going to try and do as Remi does and leave the past in the past. She says she’s going to go back to her counsellor, which he agrees is a good idea.

Next morning, Levi checks on Mackenzie again and finds her sitting on the edge of the bed fully dressed. She says she’s going home, now, reminding him that he said she was doing well. Levi says that’s for someone who’s had a heart attack and she’s not ready yet. He puts her bag back on the bed. Meanwhile, Remi is being served by Irene at the coffee cart, Levi turns up and Irene notices the tension between the two men. Levi asks Remi to help him build bridges with Eden.

Xander arrives at the hospital, having been summoned by Mackenzie. She announces she’s discharging herself and wants him to take her home. Xander also thinks it’s too soon and she took his advice the wrong way but Mackenzie insists it’s happening.
