Extended Summary
Tane is running a class near the beach and puts two clients through their paces: Harper and Dana, who bet dinner on the outcome. Afterwards, he reminds everyone he’s doubled the number of classes. Harper notes they joined the gym at the right time and tries to ask Tane the reason but he shrugs it off. Dana reminds Harper he’s married. Harper reminds Dana she’s buying dinner. Outside the surf club, Tane encounters Mali, who says some tourists who were hanging around earlier were interested in temporary gym memberships. He offers Tane their details but Tane, preoccupied with a text, just walks away.
The string quartet are playing as Graham and Nicola’s guests are served drinks. Graham calls everyone’s attention for a speech and presents Nicola with a ring. They briefly chat to Remi and Bree before deciding to slow dance to the music. Remi quietly tells Bree that he’s not ashamed of her and they’ll tell his parents the full story when it’s the right time. Meanwhile, Tane arrives back at the farm house and tells Mackenzie he’ll move his stuff soon. Mackenzie shows him the ring, saying Felicity was there looking for him. Tane guesses she wasn’t happy and refuses the ring.
At the Diner, Harper encourages Dana to take regular gym classes. Dana tells Irene that normally they join a gym and then don’t go. She notes the article on Alf in the paper and comments on the decades of service he’s given to the community, thinking they should do something like that. Irene thinks as a nurse and a social worker they’re already doing their bit.
Mali arrives home and finds Tane and his things there. He initially thinks Tane has come for dinner. Mackenzie apologises for not checking with him earlier and explains Tane’s staying with them. Mali asks about Felicity and Tane says they’ve split up, adding that the marriage was a lie.
Next morning, Graham and Nicola are sat outside the house, suspecting Bree had something on her mind last night. Remi and Bree join them and Bree explains the story behind her husband dying: He died because of her. At the Diner, Dana tries to convince Harper to ditch the gym and have a long lunch instead. Harper gets a text offering her a job interview at the local area health district today and declines Dana’s offer to help her prepare.
Tane joins Mackenzie and Mali for breakfast and asks about house rules. Mali says keep the house tidy, the protein powder on the bench is his and he’s the only one allowed to play loud music. Tane gets a text from Felicity, the latest in a long line he hasn’t replied to. Mackenzie encourages him to call her but he decides to block her instead. Later, Mackenzie tries to get Tane to talk about Felicity and again offers him the ring, saying Felicity sees it as a sign of hope. Tane puts it in the bin instead and walks out. Mali has overheard some of the conversation and advises Mackenzie to stay out of it as she retrieves the ring.
Bree explains her husband was violent and controlling, she was afraid for both herself and Remi, and it came to the point where it was him or her. Graham and Nicola thank her for telling them. Graham takes Remi for a walk to let the women talk. Nicola says she can see Bree cares about Remi and hopes they’ll see more of her. At the Diner, Dana gets a phone call and tells Irene she’s been offered her first shift at the Northern District Hospital. Harper turns up and tells them the interview went well until they told her she was overqualified, which she takes to mean she won’t get the job.
Mackenzie and Mali walk towards the surf club. Mackenzie offers Mali a free coffee before admitting she wants him to keep an eye on Tane. Mali isn’t keen, pointing out that he barely knows Tane who he thinks will ask if he wants help. Up in Salt, Remi and Bree chat about the trip. Mackenzie comes up and they explain about Bree meeting Remi’s parents. Remi tells Bree he hopes they’ll still be together and in love in 35 years.
Harper arrives at the surf club and reminds Tane they have a PT session booked, which Tane had forgotten about. She suggests they reschedule but Tane just walks away, saying he can’t deal with this. Mali claims not to know anything about it. At the Diner, Dana tells Irene she’s decided what she’s going to do about volunteering: She’s signed up for her bronze medallion. Irene warns her that John runs the class and is a hard taskmaster. Dana thinks after dealing with difficult patients and arrogant surgeons she can deal with him. Irene isn’t convinced.
Harper accosts Tane on his return to the surf club, wondering what’s going on. As Mali watches, Tane loudly announces to everyone in the surf club that his marriage is over, then storms off into the gym.
