Extended Summary

Mali follows Tane down the beach and they discuss his announcement, noting at least it’s out in the open now. Tane is adamant that it’s over with Felicity but admits he still loves her. Mali says it will take time to get over it but Tane wants to find a way to get her out of his system. Back at the surf club, Harper fills Dana in on what happened. Tane and Mali come back and Tane apologises to Harper for snapping at her, offering her the PT class now.

By the coffee cart, Justin talks to Alf and Roo about Lyrik’s first gig back. John arrives and tells them he’s had to put on an extra bronze medallion class because of the extreme interest from the Coastal News article, although Alf refuses to be drawn on the subject. Marilyn serves Justin but tells John she’s waiting for him to pay $4.70. John reminds her about his year’s supply of free coffee. Marilyn holds up cards reading “Your coffee card has expired”, “No arguments”. John threatens to call Irene and Marilyn holds up further cards: “The cards were her idea”, “You’re cut off”, “It’s over”.

Later, John tries to argue that he should have extra days for when he was out of town and that the expiry date rubbed off. Marilyn says everyone knows when the golf tournament was and tells Roo he’s been drinking three or four cups a day. Roo heads off for the gym. Kirby turns up to get coffee and muffins for a song-writing session. John decides to go without coffee rather than pay.

Tane directs Harper lifting weights at the gym. Roo turns up and Tane goes to get the notes from her physio. Dana also turns up and congratulates Roo on getting there before telling Harper she’s been accepted into the bronze medallion course. Roo warns her about John. Tane returns and rather abruptly asks if they want to talk or get to work.

Kirby arrives home and calls out but gets no response. She calls Eden and learns she and Remi can’t make it: She didn’t ask Theo because they haven’t written since they broke up. Left alone, she tinkers with the keyboard, eats the muffin, crosses out and screws up a lot of pieces of paper and tinkers with the lyric “I can’t be the one to help you” without getting any further.

At the Morgan house, Theo asks Justin to decide on inside or outside for the wedding. Justin offers inside for the reception. Theo says he can’t check venues without a date. Kirby turns up and asks Theo to help her song write. Justin is willing to give up the wedding planning for Lyrik’s sake.

Outside the surf club, Harper and Mali tell Roo about Tane and Felicity’s split, although neither have any details. Tane emerges with John, who comments on not having seen him at home. Roo intercepts John and brings him over to their table. Mali offers to walk home with Tane but Tane wants to head out, ignoring Mali’s advice about drinking to forget.

Kirby tells Theo she wants to write something hopeful, while Justin offers to order pizza. Theo suggests being reunited or reborn. To Kirby’s astonishment, he checks an online thesaurus, offering redeemed, reawakened and phoenix rising from the ashes (Justin says he likes it, then remembers he’s only the manager). Kirby says songs come from the heart, not the internet. She decides to head home and meet again tomorrow. Theo checks with Justin that was weird.

Next morning at the Diner, Harper tells Roo and Marilyn that she’s been offered another interview with the agency despite thinking she’d blown it. She also tells Roo that Cash told her Felicity’s out of town and that she wants to help Tane but doesn’t know him that well. John comes in and, on seeing Marilyn, turns to leave. She tells him the coffee cart know about him. John declares his intention to go cold turkey.

John draws up by his class, including Dana, in an even grumpier than usual mood. As he’s doing the introduction, a latecomer, Banjo, turns up. John dubs him “man bun” and brushes aside his explanation of running into a mate, saying being late on lifesaving costs lives. He takes Banjo’s coffee from him and sniffs it before placing it on the table. He tells the group to line up. Dana and Banjo bump into each other and he warns them they won’t pass if they can’t even line up.

Tane emerges and Mali offers him breakfast. Tane says it’ll have to be for two and an attractive young woman, Layla, appears from the direction of his room. She declines Tane’s offer of breakfast and he shows her to the door. Later, Mali visits Tane at the gym and asks if getting Felicity out of his system worked. Tane says it did. Mali asks what he and Mackenzie are supposed to say if Felicity asks what he’s doing. Tane says to tell the truth and insists he doesn’t care.

Dana answers one of John’s questions on hand signals and he gets Banjo, who he continues to call “man bun” despite his protests, to answer another one, which he does. He calls a drink break and Harper appears, chatting to Dana and Banjo who are both regretting taking the course. John tells Harper to stop distracting his students and calls them back for the in-water part of the lesson.

Justin and Theo arrive at the surf club, passing a frustrated Mali heading out for a surf. They find Kirby writing. Theo asks if he did something last night. Kirby says they just weren’t gelling. Justin takes Theo upstairs for a feed. John leads his class in, gazing longingly at a man walking past with coffees, before telling them that they’ve only done a fraction of the course so should leave if they can’t handle it. Harper appears and gives him a double shot on her, which is enough to get him to dismiss the class.

Up in Salt, Theo complains to Justin about Kirby giving up on collaborating. Justin points out that Kirby’s had a taste of a solo career and it might take her time to get used to working with others again and find a new dynamic. Theo decides to go and see her, after telling Justin to check with Leah about a wedding date. Justin opens a laptop and finds someone has been looking up insomnia.

Theo finds Kirby at home, still struggling to write. He offers to give it another go and Kirby admits she overreacted about him looking at his phone. Theo says he can’t write without her and repeats Justin’s comment about finding a new dynamic.

At the Diner, Marilyn tells Roo that Jett has invited her to go on holiday with him since Lindsay has to work, although she has to ask Irene and Leah for time off work. Justin turns up looking for Leah and Marilyn says she hasn’t been rostered on for the last two days. Justin says she told him she was at work and wonders where she has been.
