Extended Summary

John wanders round to Lyrik’s back garden, where Remi, Eden, Kirby and Theo are finishing their performance and celebrating how well it went. John gives some ironic applause and notes they’ve scared off dogs and small children. Eden offers him an encore and John notes he has a real job to get to, exiting to cheery farewells from the others. They decide to send the video to Justin and post it on the socials. Meanwhile, Roo, now off her crutches, arrives at the Diner and Marilyn quietly tells her to follow her lead. Alf calls them over, then goes to get a cup of tea. Marilyn explains about him wanting to go and visit Martha today. When Alf returns, Roo agrees that they should talk things over.

John is singing the song from earlier to himself as he sets up the surf club. Mali notices and John denies it was a Lyrik song before admitting he has the song stuck in his head. He asks Mali if he got the e-mail about closing early, explaining about Alf’s distinguished service award. Mali asks about his speech. John produces several crossed out cards and reads what he’s got: “Alf Stewart is many things.” Mali offers to help him set up.

Back at the Diner, Alf listens on in confusion, suggesting Marilyn and Roo make a decision and move on. Roo agrees, suggesting he go to Merimbula. Alf looks around for his keys and Roo says they weren’t on the table when she got there. He heads off to look for them. Roo produces them, telling Marilyn she hasn’t lost her touch.

Kirby, Eden and Theo are all in a celebratory mood but Remi is more despondent as he notes they’ve had no replies and only a dozen views for the video. Kirby is apologetic as Eden suggests they lost traction from the album. Remi says it’s hard to have to start from scratch. Later, inside the house, Remi wonders how many replies they got from industry journos and Theo admits there weren’t any. Remi asks how Forrest made it look so easy and Kirby recalls him sending out group e-mails to industry contacts. Remi realises she’s probably got their e-mail addresses in her inbox but Kirby doesn’t feel comfortable using them. Remi asks whether her loyalty is to Forrest or them, prompting her to walk out.

Outside the surf club, John tells Mali that Alf’s on his way there. Seeing him approaching, Mali tells John to keep Alf busy while he puts the surf club back how it was. John intercepts Alf, who wants to look for his keys in the office. John recalls a group of teens said they saw some keys in the car park and left them there in case the owner came back.

Theo catches up with Kirby near the house. Kirby wonders if he and Eden think the same as Remi. Theo says he doesn’t question Kirby’s loyalty. Kirby says Forrest invested time, energy and money in her and she let him down. Theo points out he was a businessman but says it’s her call. They decide to go for a walk instead of going back to the house.

Round the back, Eden tells Remi that in one respect he’s right but in another he’s a bonehead, since nothing good will come of upsetting Kirby and that he was the one who chose to disappoint the fans by promising a gig. Remi recalls that before all this they had gigs lined up and labels sniffing around. Eden says they’re used to doing things the hard way.

Alf and John return to the surf club where Mali has just finished getting everything straight: John is able to dismiss the rest as a smoke alarm test and spring cleaning. Alf checks the office and notices a jacket hanging up in a case, querying why John is having his dry cleaning delivered there. Mali offers to help Alf look outside.

At the Diner, Roo tells Marilyn they have a problem: Martha’s too ill with flu to come so wants them to delay the presentation. Marilyn agrees but Roo thinks it’s too late. Marilyn says they need to ring John either way. Meanwhile, Alf is checking around his car with some help from Mali. Alf wants to go back to the surf club so Mali suggests going back to the Diner instead. Alf recalls what Roo said about the keys not being on the table and realises she took them.

Remi notes that Eden hasn’t said whether or not she thinks it’s right to use the contacts. Eden says she’s thinking of the bigger picture, recalling how Kirby ended up alienated from them in the first place. Theo and Kirby turn up and Kirby and Remi exchange apologises. Eden announces she’s calling a band meeting and a vote. Later, everyone has voted on whether or not to follow Kirby or Remi’s plan. Remi adds that they’ll ask Justin if it’s a tie. Everyone breathes a sigh of relief when Kirby gets three votes… then Eden finds the fourth vote is for her as well. Remi agrees it’s her choice.

John has been summoned to the Diner where Marilyn and Roo explain the situation. John agrees that they need to go ahead without Martha, since the catering’s sorted and keeping it secret from Alf is getting too hard. Roo says she’ll send Martha videos. Alf and Mali turn up and Alf reclaims the keys before storming out. John sends Mali to stop him leaving. As they head back to the car, Mali tries to convince Alf not to leave this late. Alf realises everyone has been acting suspiciously all day and asks what’s going on.

John tells Roo and Marilyn the two of them should have got Martha to stop Alf leaving. He admits to Marilyn that he’s not sure he’s the right person to give a speech about Alf. Marilyn says Alf is fond of John deep down and John’s the best person to talk about what the surf club means. Meanwhile, Mali has confessed to Alf about the presentation, which is starting in an hour. He begs Alf to look surprised. Alf looks more like grumpy.
