Kirby makes a final bid for freedom. Will Summer Bay lose one of their own?
Extended Summary
Kirby tries to get Forrest to release her but he reminds her that she signed a contract to record three albums, and thinks the success of her single shows she can perform as a solo artist. Kirby tells him that if he doesn’t comply, Lyrik will tell their fans that he’s the reason the gig was cancelled. Forrest notes that that could cause him pain, but he’d respond by suing her for defamation and breach of contract.
In the hospital corridor, Leah apologises that Alf came back to this. She notes it was the cult and, as far as Justin’s concerned, they’re getting what they wanted. In the room, Bree offers to stay with Justin while Theo goes to check on Leah. Theo feels he’s letting her down and mentions her asking Justin to marry her.
Kirby heads home and tells Remi that Forrest considered it an empty threat. Remi is intrigued by a comment about bringing something to the table, and concludes that, as Forrest is a businessman, they need to offer him something.
Alf and Leah have joined Theo in the room. Leah encourages Theo to say anything to Justin that he wants to. Theo says Justin took him in, taught him to surf and gave him a guitar, and changed his life. Alf says he heard Leah asked Justin to marry her and it’s about time. The machines start bleeping and they call in Bree, who ushers them out and orders an ECG. She shines a light in Justin’s eyes…and, in his head, he flinches away from the light. From his perspective, he’s surrounded by people wearing dark clothes. He shuffles into a church with them and sees his photograph.
Forrest meets Kirby and Remi at the Diner, saying he had to turn around and come back to meet them. He wonders why Remi’s there and Kirby says she wants him there. Remi puts their proposal to Forrest: He releases Kirby and gives Lyrik back the copyright for their songs, and in return the label will have complete control of the songs Kirby wrote while working for them. Kirby says he can use them for anything. Nearby, Marilyn takes a call from Alf and tells Irene they think Justin’s dying. At the hospital, Alf returns to Leah and Theo moments before Bree comes out. She says Justin’s heart is failing and asks Leah to come with her. Leah asks if this is it and Bree says it may well be. Leah sits next to Justin.
In his dream, Justin sees the people filing into pews, then sees Theo playing a solemn tune on the guitar and Leah sat in the front row. Neither responds when he talks to them. Leah looks past him and Justin sees a coffin, before clutching his chest. In reality, the machines start beeping and Bree tells Leah to stand back while they try and control the arrhythmias. Leah begs Justin to not leave her. In his head, Justin calls out that that he won’t. He crouches next to the Leah in his vision, then sees a gravestone marked “Justin Morgan He Gave Up.” He sees Theo comforting Leah and her saying she can’t imagine her life without him…then she looks directly at Justin and says he gave up, calling him a coward. To the real Leah and Bree’s astonishment, the beeping stops and Justin wakes up.
Marilyn takes another phone call and tells Irene that Justin’s awake. Forrest comes back from a phone call and asks to speak to Kirby in private. Remi goes to wait at the counter. Forrest tells Kirby that they’ll agree, but cautions her against walking away and letting other people sing her songs. Kirby insists it’s what she wants. Forrest accepts her decision and shakes her hand. Kirby nods to Remi.
Irene and Marilyn join Alf at the hospital. In his room, Leah, Theo and Bree are tending to a recovering Justin. The only explanation Bree can offer is that he found the strength to hold on. Noting the people now crowding outside the door, Leah wonders if it’s too soon for visitors. Justin says the more the merrier.
Kirby and Remi arrive home. Remi notes they now have to find a way to cancel the gig without blaming Forrest. Kirby though is delighted at both Lyrik being back and Justin recovering, and is fine with letting go of the songs. She gets a call from Eden and, after checking she’s heard about Justin, says she’ll tell her how the meeting with Forrest went when she gets home. After an outburst in response, she explains she’s free. Remi looks suddenly thoughtful.
At the hospital, Irene tells Justin and Leah no more fake holidays and Alf says they’ll be the death of him, while Marilyn gets teary. Theo notes they’ve got a wedding to prepare for, which delights those that don’t already know, although Justin is silent throughout. Bree ushers everyone other than Leah out. Justin offers for Leah to go home and rest but she insists he’s not getting red of her. Bree leaves the room and runs into Remi, who asks to talk.
Remi and Bree walk by the beach, with Bree noting she really thought they were going to lose Justin. Remi thanks her for giving him space to sort things out with the band, but now it’s sorted, he asks her to move back in with him. Bree says no. Back at the hospital, Justin tells Leah about his dream of his own funeral. He says he knows she only asked him to marry her because he was dying so he’s not going to hold her to it. Leah looks thrown.
