Extended Summary

Felicity and Tane walk away from the surf club. Felicity notes she hasn’t missed Mackenzie’s moral superiority. Tane asks if that was what she wanted to talk about. Felicity says it was about starting a family. Tane says he can’t stop thinking about it. After much hesitation, Felicity says she didn’t like him telling Mackenzie they were trying. Tane points out that he just confirmed it after she guessed but agrees not to do it again.

At the hospital, Leah is by Justin’s side and asks Bree about his latest blood results. Bree says they suggested his heart functioni is deteriorating: The next step would be an echo but they can’t do that until tomorrow morning. She assures Leah the deterioration is slow and it’ll be fine until then. She also suggests Leah go home, having not left in two days, but Leah insists she’s staying.

Next morning, Tane brings Felicity a coffee by the beach but wonders if she should be having it while trying to get pregnant. Felicity says she’ll stop if she does. Tane says he’ll give it up with her, along with alcohol and soft cheese. Felicity points out he hates that anyway. Meanwhile, Bree arrives at work and finds the police waiting to take a statement. She passes the news on to Leah, who doesn’t know what else she can tell them. She is worried something will happen to Justin if she leaves him. Bree promises they’ll keep an eye on him.

Alf has just arrived home and is about to take his bags upstairs when Dana knocks on the door. He thinks she’s there to rent a van and says they’re closed. Dana realises who he is and that he wasn’t expected back until tomorrow. She says she was after Roo for a reference. Alf is confused, especially when she says she was looking after Roo at home, and says either she’s full of it or Roo has a lot of explaining to do. Dana suggests none of the above and beats a hasty retreat.

At the Diner, Marilyn and Roo are celebrating Roo being out of the house, even if they are having to do work on the presentation, including sorting out photos for the slide show. Roo confirms that Martha’s coming down. Dana turns up and tells Roo about looking for her for a reference. Roo is happy to give her one but Dana explains Alf was there and she put her foot in it.

Leah arrives back at the hospital and is horrified to find Justin’s room empty. She dashes out, frantically asking what’s happened. Bree assures her that Justin’s fine and has just been taken for his echo. Later, as Leah frets in the corridor, Justin is brought back. Leah asks when they’ll get the results and Bree says the specialist will text her as soon as he’s looked at the scans.

Tane and Felicity are eating at Salt. Tane suggests a holiday to New Zealand to look at their land and thank the whanau. He assures her he won’t tell them about trying for a baby and comments that they’d tell her to cut her hair while she can, explaining by tradition Maori women don’t cut their hair while pregnant. Seeing Felicity looking uncomfortable, he tries to explain he doesn’t care whether she does it or not.

At the caravan park house, Roo and Marilyn arrive back to greet Alf, after a nervous whispered conversation. Alf, who came back early on hearing Justin was in hospital, asks why they needed Dana to look after Roo when Marilyn was there. They tell him that Irene needed help at the Diner while Leah was at the hospital with Justin, so Marilyn was there most of the time. Alf walks away and they have a whispered debate on whether he bought it or not.

Bree runs into Dana at the hospital. Dana explains she’s there to ask about a nursing job. Bree suggests arranging a meeting with the director of nursing. Dana admits her employee history is a bit tricky. Outside the surf club, Tane approaches Felicity as she’s accepting a delivery and apologises if he was too full-on. Felicity says there’s no guarantee she’ll fall pregnant quickly or at all. Tane knows that but thinks they’ve got a good chance since they’re young and healthy. However, he agrees to dial back the enthusiasm.

Marilyn is on the phone to John, saying they’re going to have to postpone the meeting now Alf’s back. Alf comes back in and wonders why Marilyn and Roo are looking at his photos. Roo says she was thinking of digitising them. They distract him with photos of him with Martha and of him walking Roo down the aisle.

Dana has filled Bree in on everything that happened to her, explaining the police dropped the charges but there’ll always be gossip. Bree says she’ll put in a word for her and suggests signing up to an agency if she can’t get a full-time job. She then gets a text and heads off to see Leah. She explains the tests show Justin is in cardiac failure, and it would be too risky to operate. Leah asks if they’re just going to leave him to die. Bree says they’ll try and control things with medication but she should prepare for the worst. Leah declines to call anyone and tells Justin to prove them wrong.

Alf says he’s going to check on the caravan park. Unaware he’s still within earshot, Roo and Marilyn discuss keeping things from him. Alf comes back in and asks what’s going on. They try and tell him there were maintenance issues at the caravan park which they sorted. Alf threatens to call Irene or John and demands the truth.

Leah waits while the nurse runs some tests before going back to Justin’s side and saying the medication is going to work, he’s going to wake up and he’s going to live until he’s old and grey.
