Rose seeks answers about her past. Felicity leans on her friends. Alf can hear, but will he listen?

Extended Summary

Felicity and Eden are driving back towards town. Felicity gets a text message and tells Eden to pull over. She gets out of the car and hurries onto the beach in a distressed state. Eden follows and Felicity explains the facilitator has recommended the meeting go ahead: Now she just has to decide what she wants. At the Diner flat, Rose sees that Samuel has left a voicemail. She says she wasn’t expecting a response so soon but Mali encourages her to play it. Samuel says that he has questions too, so would like to meet her in person and is at home today. Mali indicates Rose can wait but she says she can’t face another night with questions and turns down his offer to go with her.

At Salt, Mackenzie finds John rearranging tables and wonders when he started working for her. John says he was setting up for tonight’s committee meeting, since Alf’s back for it. Mackenzie assures him her staff will handle it. Mali comes in and Mackenzie can see something’s wrong. He tells her that Rose is meeting her biological father and it’s moving faster than expected.

Rose approaches the house. Samuel comes out to meet her and invites her inside, which she accepts. She notes it’s a nice place and he says it’s a lot for just one person: He and his wife divorced a few years ago and he doesn’t have kids. He amends the comment, saying he doesn’t have others. He remembers Yvette, and Rose says it was twenty-six years ago she taught her. She asks why he hasn’t been part of her life. Samuel says until today he didn’t know she existed.

At Salt, Felicity tells Eden she can’t remember what happened that day and thinks talking to Jeremy might trigger a memory. She invites Eden to give an opinion but Eden says it’s Felicity’s decision. Mackenzie comes over and politely asks if Felicity can give her more notice before taking time off. Felicity retorts she has bigger things to worry about and walks out.

Eden follows her outside but Felicity says she’s fine and says the same to Mali when she collides with him. Mackenzie takes Eden aside and asks what’s going on, since Felicity seemed to be doing better. After a bit of prodding, Eden admits something has happened.

Samuel tells Rose that he would have supported Yvette and was in love with her, although he acknowledges he was also married. He says she just suddenly wasn’t there one day, and when he went to her share house, he found she’d moved on and not left a forwarding address, and they didn’t all have mobile phones in those days. Rose suggests she didn’t want to admit she was pregnant by a married man. Samuel suggests this is new territory for both of them. Rose says it might be for him but she’s spent her whole life wondering where she came from.

At the Diner, Leah and Marilyn discuss Alf’s hearing aids with him. As he’s about to leave, John appears, wanting to go over the meeting agenda with him. Marilyn quietly comments that he’ll wish he’d stayed in the city and is surprised that Alf hears. John draws Alf’s attention to item three on the agenda, team bonding, and shows him a list of options he’s put together.

Mackenzie and Eden have accompanied Felicity home for a girls’ night in, since Tane’s away and Cash is on night shift. Felicity apologises for losing it before. She asks what they’d do. Eden says she wouldn’t do it but she’s not Felicity. Mackenzie agrees it’s about what Felicity wants but, when pushed, says she’d see him to tell him what a waste of space he is.

Samuel shows Rose the family bible, which has five generations of their family listed in the inside page. He points out the name of his parents, her grandparents, and says they’d like to meet her when she’s ready. Rose adds her own name and her birthday, 21st April. As they exit the house, Samuel suggests they meet again, saying she’s welcome any time. Rose agrees and he says to call him if she has any questions.

Later, at the Diner flat, Rose tells Mali she got goosebumps writing her name in the family bible but it was mostly weird and awkward, and she always thought if she did meet her father, she’d have an instant connection with him. Mali thinks it’ll be easier as she spends more time with him. Meanwhile, Leah and Marilyn are closing up at the Diner when Alf turns up to walk Marilyn home. Leah notices he’s unusually calm for an evening with John. Alf says it was the best committee meeting he’s ever been to and ran like clockwork. Leah looks after him with some concern.

Next morning, Mackenzie has evidently spent the night at the Parata house after a late one and declines an offer to join Felicity and Eden for breakfast, saying she needs to open Salt and is fine with Felicity not coming in. Felicity and Eden discuss her wanting to know what happened, although Eden wishes there was another way. Felicity has a flashback to her and Tane seeing Jeremy’s first message about “their” video and looks as though she’s realised something.

Marilyn is serving Alf at the Diner as John turns up. John agrees with Alf that they got through more than usual at the meeting. After Alf’s gone, John tells Marilyn that Alf didn’t argue with him at the meeting and his hearing seems to be worse than ever. Marilyn tries to dismiss it but John asks if she can remember Alf agreeing with him before and she admits he hasn’t. John says last night he agreed with everything.

Felicity is sitting on her own. She grabs her phone and leaves a message for Cash, saying she needs to speak with him.
