Eden seeks advice from Kirby. Mali offers his support to Mackenzie. Marilyn’s in hot water with Irene.
Extended Summary
Mali finishes off a surfing lesson on the beach. Mackenzie comes along and notices Mali is now wearing a uniform that says Manta Ray Boards. He says it’s given his business a connection to home and also tells her about his break-up with Rose. They head up to the surf club where Mali mentions merchandising for the board shop and Mackenzie wonders if she should do that with Salt. John comes over and notes Mali’s being a bit premature with the new uniform since the committee haven’t okayed the changes yet. Mali wonders if he should talk to Alf but John says he’ll get the news and tell Mali. He checks in with Mackenzie, who says she’s drawn a line under Gabe.
Eden tells Cash that she doesn’t want their song out there and thought he’d feel the same. Cash says it’s already out there since she performed it in public. Eden says as far as she was concerned she was singing to him. Cash suggests singing it would celebrate their getting back together. Eden asks him not to downplay it and says she’s going for a walk on her own.
At the Diner, Marilyn gives a customer a Stunning Organics pack. Kirby turns up and Marilyn asks her to be a brand ambassador, which would get Marilyn a commission. Kirby says she’s busy with Lyrik so Marilyn asks about a new video. The customer asks Irene for a free coffee, saying Kirby promised one in the video. Kirby deflects to Marilyn and Irene asks for a word.
Alf approaches Mali outside the surf club and tells him the good news is the committee have agreed to his proposal…and the bad news is he’ll have to work with John. John comes out to tell Mali, and Alf explains Gerald called him. Mali invites them both to dinner at Salt to discuss what he can do himself. At the Diner, Kirby apologises to Irene while Marilyn dismisses it as a couple of coffees, shrugging off Irene pointing out she might have sold more. Marilyn offers her free samples or to be a brand ambassador. Irene tells them both to do their jobs. After she’s gone, Kirby chastises Marilyn for not getting permission and worries that she’ll get fired. Marilyn says she’ll smooth it over while Kirby mans the coffee cart.
Cash approaches Eden outside the surf club and checks she’s okay with him being there. After a few moments of silence, Eden asks if he’s going to say something. Cash comments that Eden wants him to agree with her but he’s not going to: He’s proud of the song, so she needs to stop using him as an excuse. The two of them go for a walk, with Eden talking about how she’s uncomfortable with their business going public. Cash notes he’s only ever written police reports and suggests she talk to someone that knows about it, nodding over to Kirby at the coffee cart.
At the Diner, John is at the counter, waxing about how much he’s helped Mali. Irene points out that he isn’t actually talking to anyone and Marilyn says they’re busy. Irene sarcastically congratulates her on noticing. John says he just came in for a free coffee. Marilyn tells Irene she’s cleared the tables before apologising for using the Diner, saying she’s just stressed about selling products. Irene tells her to do it on her own time.
At the coffee cart, Eden talks to Kirby about putting it all out there. Kirby says she finds it cathartic and no-one knows what the songs are about, saying Fireworks is all about an argument she had with Bob. Eden says she always thought it was about sex. She worries about the meaning of the song changing and Kirby says Eden has no control over it.
Mali is taking selfies at the board shop and explains to Mackenzie that he needs them for his socials. Mackenzie ends up taking the phone and taking some proper photos of him with a board. Mali asks about her plans for the evening and she says she’s just having me time. Later, Mackenzie is staring into space at home. When the microwave pings after heating up some leftovers, she ends up putting it aside without much enthusiasm.
At Salt, Mali is having his meal with Alf and John. They drink a toast but Alf and John soon start bickering about who should take credit for Mali’s success. Mackenzie comes in and Mali goes to talk to her, wondering what happened to her me time. She says there was a staffing issue to sort out. At the Lyrik house, Eden sings All of You to herself, breaking off when she realises Cash is in the doorway. She admits it felt good playing it but asks him to promise that it will always be their song. Cash does so and Eden says she’ll let the band know they’ve got a new song to learn.
Marilyn and Kirby try to convince Irene to go home early and let them close up but Irene wants to keep an eye on things. Marilyn gets a text and insists on reading it despite Irene’s warning. She is delighted to discover someone has bought an entire box of sun screen, until she sees it was the surf club and assumes John was behind it.
Mali asks Mackenzie if she sorted out her staffing issue. He compares having dinner with Alf and John to watching mountain goats butting heads, saying they act as though they’ve been married fifty years. Mackenzie wonders if anyone actually stays together that long. Mali says they do if you find the right person. Mackenzie says you have to make sure they stick around but she’s not going to fall apart over Gabe this time.
Next morning, Mali arrives at the surf club and John points out a delivery that arrived for him. Mackenzie turns up as he’s opening them and discovering Elandra has sent his stuff from home, having converted his bedroom into a playroom for his nieces and nephews. Mackenzie suggests he see it as her saying she knows he’s there for the long haul. Mali debates how to store them in his caravan. Mackenzie again invites him to live with her, saying she could use the company.
Outside, Marilyn drops the box full of Stunning Organics products at John’s feet, but he tells her he doesn’t know what she’s talking about. Marilyn calls it a pity purchase and accuses him of planning to pay for Jett’s wedding all by himself. John says it’s too early in the morning for this much crazy and walks off.
