Extended Summary

Irene serves Justin at the coffee cart. Alf and Roo arrive and wish him luck for his first counselling session. Irene and Roo make jokes about Marilyn’s beauty sales, adding that Jett never actually asked her to contribute to the wedding and now she’s in over her head. Alf thinks they should support her. At the surf club, John continues to claim to know nothing about the order, although he’s unable to explain why it’s addressed to the surf club office. Marilyn insists she still has her pride and will refund every cent. She leaves, taking the box with her.

At Salt, Mackenzie tries to big up her house to Mali, saying she’s got three bedrooms and a shed he can do his board shaping in. Mali still says no. Mackenzie admits she isn’t good on her own and could do with a busy house. She asks him to think about it. Meanwhile, Rose brings Xander back to the flat and insists that he sit rather than getting himself a glass of water. Xander asks if there’s any news on the funeral and Rose claims not yet. She goes to get some food from the Diner. Once she’s gone, Xander makes a phone call.

Marilyn arrives back at the Diner with the box, replacing it in the back room without explanation and telling Irene and Roo she wants John to stay out of her life. Irene and Roo ask Marilyn about her products, suggesting they might be interested in buying something cheap. Marilyn enthusiastically offers to talk them through the whole range. Alf and Rose come in, talking about Xander being back, and Irene quickly takes the opportunity to serve her and avoid the conversation. Marilyn gives Roo a starter pack. Alf asks her when he’s getting the sunscreen he ordered for the surf club, saying he thought he could hand it out to people. Marilyn awkwardly says he’ll get it soon.

Rose goes back up to the flat where Xander tells her the funeral’s today. Rose tries to pretend she didn’t know but Xander isn’t fooled so she drops the pretense, making it clear that she thinks he shouldn’t go and warning him about his habit of taking on other people’s problems. Xander insists he’s going and asks if she’s going to drive him or not.

Mali turns up at the farm house and Mackenzie welcomes him “home”, saying he can have her old room since she’s just upgraded. Mali warns her he’s not the best housemate: He plays loud music, snores and doesn’t like dirty dishes in the sink (like she currently has). Mackenzie says she’s not great either, offering that she only cooks about once every six months, hogs the bathroom and watches daggy romcoms. Mali agrees to move in. Meanwhile, Justin is waiting in a courtyard and meets his counsellor, Amanda. She is happy to do the session outside and invites him to tell her about himself.

Rose makes it clear to Xander that she knows from Bree that he’s been having nightmares and thinks it won’t help to go to the funeral when he’s already struggling with surviving when Jamie didn’t. Xander protests that that’s how funerals work, as a way of saying goodbye, and wants to support Jamie’s family. Rose refuses to let him go.

Mali and Mackenzie arrive at the surf club, with Mackenzie giving details on bins and utility bills. John overhears and learns they’re living together, saying there’s plenty of room at his if Mali was looking. Mali says John’s too much of a party animal for him. He gets a text and says he has to go see a friend. Marilyn turns up with the box and John says he doesn’t have time for World War III. Marilyn says she’s there to make peace, saying she made assumptions but adding that they were probablt correct. John reminds her about the making peace bit. Marilyn apologises and he accepts, saying they both want to give Jett a good wedding.

Justin isn’t entirely keen on Amanda’s “getting to know you” idea, saying he’d rather skip to the treatment and techniques. Amanda says it’s not that simple. Justin says he’s a mechanic and when someone brings him a car, he fixes it. He asks her to suggest meditation or deep breathing. Amanda says they need to find out why he gets angry. Justin snaps that he thought the guy had assaulted his daughter. He calms down and apologises, saying that’s what he wants to stop doing. Amanda compares their situation to him needing to do an examination of a car to identify a problem.

Rose calls out to Xander that she’s going shopping. Mali arrives, saying he’s there to see Xander. Xander emerges from the bathroom, saying to give him a minute to change, with Mali saying he’ll also do it on the way. Xander explains to Rose that he called Mali because Rose wouldn’t take him. After Xander’s gone to his room, Rose tries to talk Mali out of taking him but Mali refuses to discuss it.

Amanda asks Justin to tell her when he first lost control. She says she wants to hear it in his own words. He suggests getting a different counsellor, feeling they’re not a good fit. Amanda reminds him this is court ordered and she won’t sign him off as fit if he only pays lip service to the sessions. Later, Amanda asks Justin about similar incidents in the past. Justin mentions Stephen and says there were extenuating circumstances. Amanda knows he had counselling for addiction and he says his problems started before that. Amanda asks if he minds doing homework.

Rose tries to convince Mali that Xander might spiral. Mali says this is Xander’s only chance to say goodbye and he might not forgive her if she stops him. Xander emerges from his room. Rose straightens his tie and says she’ll take him.

Mackenzie is bemused when Mali turns up at the house with bags of shopping. He says it’s what cupboards are for and insists on cooking dinner for her that evening. Mackenzie protests she employs professional chefs to cater for her, but accepts they need milk for her coffee. She encourages him to have an event to open Manta Ray Boards. She starts playing music and Mali expresses shock that she actually likes it. She starts dancing to it and he joins her.

At Salt, Marilyn thanks Alf for ordering the sunscreen. She feels bad about the way she spoke to John but Alf says he’s used to it. Alf and Roo ask what they can do to help her sell the boxes. Alf sees Justin come in and go to the bar, joining him. Justin admits the counselling didn’t go the way he expected. Meanwhile, Xander and Rose arrive back at the flat. Rose admits she was wrong (but will deny ever saying it), saying she was impressed with how he handled himself. Xander winces in pain and Rose goes to get his painkillers. Xander takes out the service sheet from the funeral, which includes a child’s drawing of Jamie, and looks teary.
