Extended Summary

Mackenzie joins Gabe on the beach after a surf and thanks him for his advice on taking her mind off Dean’s departure, although she is still unsure about how long it will take to get over it. She checks Gabe isn’t having second thoughts about moving in. Meanwhile, Mali adds his name to the Ben’s Boards sign. Xander teases him about it but Rose is more encouraging. Mali announces the beginning of the “Mali Era”.

Mali and Rose go inside with Mali talking about needing to reply to a board shaping client. Rose asks how he’s going to cope with running two businesses and he admits he hasn’t quite worked it out. He gets a text saying the instructor he hired to do a private lesson tomorrow has cancelled and explains he’s doing a group lesson at the same time. He recalls Dean left a list of people to contact but needs to find it. Meanwhile, Remi is playing guitar at home while Bree returns to her own flat, calls out and then settles down on her own looking glum. Remi stops playing when his hand hurts.

At home, Mackenzie is on the phone, insisting she’s not working tonight. Gabe takes the phone off her and says she’ll be there: There’s no chef and she needs to sort it out. Mackenzie wishes she could spend the evening with him so he says he’ll come with her. They briefly chat about him starting chemo tomorrow.

They arrive at Salt; Rose and Mali are sat at a table while Remi is at the bar. Remi orders a bourbon and rather abruptly rebuffs Mackenzie’s attempt at conversation. Mali tells Rose he’ll have to cancel his client and offer her a freebie. He notes he set up his own business and has now inherited Dean’s way of doing things. Gabe overhears and offers his help streamlining the business. Bree comes in and Rose invites her to join them. Bree accepts but then she and Remi see each other and she changes her mind.

Bree arrives back at the flat. Xander is there now and notes the fridge is empty and it was his turn to do shopping. He decides to head out for food and let Bree have some time to herself, saying to call him if she needs a friend to talk to. At Salt, Rose tries to talk to Remi but he says that there’s no point having a conversation if she won’t tell him what’s going on with Bree. Gabe continues to give Mali advice. Mackenzie says she’s ready to go and Gabe invites Mali to come with them. Mackenzie is surprised but agrees. Rose declines to go. Xander turns up and tells Rose about seeing Bree. Rose gives Xander a drink and tells him to keep an eye on Remi while she goes to talk to Bree.

Mackenzie, Gabe and Mali arrive back at the farm house. Mali checks it’s okay for him to be there. Gabe says they need a distraction from his chemo session. He asks Mali what his plan is. Mali admits he doesn’t have one, since he didn’t expect to enjoy teaching, although he’s considering starting an online shop. At the Diner flat, Rose tells Bree about seeing Remi. Bree doesn’t want to tell him the truth. Rose says it’s a small town and she can’t keep leaving the room when Remi comes in. Bree thinks she can’t do anything about Remi until she makes a decision about the pregnancy and she can’t talk to the one person she wants to.

Back at Salt, Remi talks to Xander about Bree’s sudden change of attitude. Xander assures him he hasn’t spoken to her about it. Clara, one of a group of women at a nearby table, comes over and introduces herself and invites the pair to join them. Xander tries to refuse but Remi accepts. Back at the flat, Rose reminds Bree of what she said about Remi being the person she wants to talk to and encourages her to tell him what’s going on. Bree ends up agreeing.

Remi and Clara arrive back at his place in a clinch. Clara starts taking his shirt off but Remi asks to talk first and then tells her to stop. Clara asks him what happens now and Remi suggests she go. Clara protests that her friends have gone home and she won’t be able to get a ride back to Mangrove River. Remi says he’s too drunk to drive her so offers her his bed to sleep in while he takes the couch.

Next morning, Gabe notes to Mackenzie that he slept in. She offers him a large breakfast but he says he’s too nervous to eat, just asking her for a coffee. He thanks her for looking after him then heads to the shower, pausing to give her an uncertain look on his way out.

Bree approaches Remi’s house but sees him emerging with Clara, who gives him a kiss on the cheek before leaving. Bree walks away without him seeing her. Back at the flat, Mali shows Xander a new logo he’s working on for the board shop and wonders about a new name. Rose is surprised to see him there and he explains he felt bad for bailing last night. He gets an alert for his surf class and has to take off. Rose and Xander briefly compare notes on Remi and Bree.

Remi is walking by the beach, looking shattered. He sees Bree sat crying and, after some hesitation, goes over to her. Bree says she saw him kissing the woman on his front porch. Remi says it’s not what it looks like. Bree tells him to stay away from her.
