Extended Summary

John approaches Mackenzie outside the surf club complaining about having to hear Lyrik at Salt as well as at home and asking if she could hire a jazz quartet instead. Eden approaches and John notes she looks rough. She says she’s been at the hospital with Cash and Felicity and Cash is improving physically. John says he’ll give him a call. After John has gone, Mackenzie invites Eden to walk with her, explaining she’s giving space to two tricky customers. Upstairs, Dean tells Ziggy she looked guilty. Ziggy apologises again for lying to him, saying she only did it because she knew how he’d react and she only looks guilty because he makes her feel strange for being in the same room as Remi.

At the Diner, Roo frets to Marilyn and Alf about a couple taking up a table, saying the one outside was too windy and one in the centre is too busy. She asks Marilyn to clear the table and give them the bill. Irene comes in and asks Alf about his trip. He says he and Martha are looking forward to their next chapter.

Eden and Mackenzie come back into the surf club. Eden says Cash has always been the one to help people: Now he needs help but won’t accept it. Mackenzie suggests she come upstairs but Eden decides to play pool instead. She invites John to join her but he declines. Up in Salt, Dean asks Ziggy why he makes her feel guilty and suggests Ziggy is into Remi, since she keeps hanging around him. Mackenzie interrupts and Dean promptly leaves. Mackenzie is disappointed they didn’t fix things.

Roo worries that her client is five minutes late. She asks Marilyn for another coffee but Irene says she’s had enough. Roo’s client, Heather, arrives and apologises for being late. Marilyn says she likes her name and Heather says her dad chose it. Heather tells Roo that she’s having flashbacks to boarding school, indicating her mum sent her there because she didn’t want her around.

John gives Dean a copy of the surf club newsletter but Dean’s attention is drawn to Eden. He approaches her and says he has some questions. Eden invites him to play. Dean asks what sort of man Remi is. Eden says Remi takes a hit without hitting back, making him better than Dean. Dean asks if Remi would make a move on his girlfriend.

Ziggy worries to Mackenzie that Dean is right since she’s never reacted to someone like this before. Mackenzie suggests that Remi is fresh and exciting and Ziggy’s in a comfortable long-term relationship with Dean so Remi makes her feel special. Ziggy says if Remi came onto her she’d push him down the stairs. Mackenzie says it’s not about Remi but about how he makes Ziggy feel.

Eden confirms that Remi dates women and isn’t usually short of company but Dean shouldn’t have anything to worry about if he and Ziggy are solid. Dean asks if Eden’s ever hooked up with him and Eden says no because he’s her best mate. She says Remi might flirt but he won’t go after someone that’s taken. Meanwhile, Heather explains to Roo that she left school early and went travelling, expecting it to be temporary. She says she worked as housekeeper or nanny to get by but isn’t in touch with the families any more. She intends to do a law degree but needs to take a bridging course at TAFE first. Roo agrees to help with the application.

Dean sees Ziggy coming downstairs and calls an end to his game with Eden. They go to talk. Eden invites John to take Dean’s place and he chats about how he used to play pool in the navy, offering her break. Eden pots at least one ball from the break. Down on the beach, Dean tells Ziggy he doesn’t want her to walk away. Ziggy says that will never happen. She admits they have a problem: She needs to feel special and that means more than beer, pizza and footy sometimes.

Eden arrives at Salt, apologising to Felicity for being late and indicating John delayed her with his navy story. She says if they’d been playing for money she’d be rich and segues into asking Mackenzie for an advance, since she still needs to eat even with the van. Mackenzie offers a free meal on her break instead. Eden passes Dean, who talks to Mackenzie about what Ziggy said but doesn’t know what special is. Mackenzie says Ziggy’s would be different from hers. Dean says he thinks he’s got it. Later, Ziggy finds Dean waiting by the beach with the car packed. He says the two of them are going on a surf trip. Ziggy is delighted and rushes to join him.

Alf returns to the Diner and chats to Marilyn and Irene about how Roo’s doing. Roo comes over to the counter for another cup of tea for Heather. She talks about how Heather wants to study law. Alf recalls how Morag always said that was hard work. Roo doesn’t want to put her off although Alf thinks she should tell her.

Much later, Roo looks over what Heather has written, saying she has a lot of passion and Roo will help her to organise thoughts and formulate arguments. Roo checks Heather is ready for the amount of work. Heather says she wants to help people, like mothers separated from their children. Sensing there’s a story, Roo says Heather can share anything she wants to. Heather tells her she was working as a housekeeper and had an affair with her employer. He said he’d leave his wife for her and she fell pregnant. He and his wife kept her on until she’d had the baby, then took the baby and told her to leave. She says she wishes she’d had someone to help her. Roo says she knows what it’s like to lose contact with your child and promises to help her. She calls out to Marilyn for tea and cake. Heather looks shocked at the name.

Mackenzie reassures some customers who have been left waiting. Eden has been texting Felicity and says Cash is being moved to a ward with better visiting hours. She notes she needs to talk to someone about the next gig. Mackenzie realises that, with Felicity away, she’ll have to deal with it. At the Diner, Roo chats to Irene about how things are going well with Heather. Marilyn briefly chats to Heather as she clears the table. As Heather goes to leave, she surreptitiously takes a photo of Marilyn and stares at it, her expression hardening. Marilyn notices the attention and smiles at her awkwardly. Heather returns the smile without warmth before looking stony again.
