Extended Summary

Logan and Mackenzie are down on the beach. Mackenzie notes it’s good to spend time together and thanks him for patching things up with Dean. Roo interrupts them, telling Logan about Martha having a bad night and deteriorating. Even though she knows he’s on leave, Logan agrees to go back with her and check it out. At Salt, Dean and Justin are chatting about the challenges. Dean notes he did stuff as bad when he was Theo’s age. Justin says he encouraged it at one point but is worried about him getting into trouble. Dean suggests he’ll get bored eventually and Justin concludes he needs a distraction. Mackenzie arrives and notes she doesn’t see the appeal of the videos. Dean says it’s lucky she didn’t know him ten years ago. Mackenzie teases him about being a rebel.

Ryder and Theo are on the pier. Ryder lays down more ground rules: No badmouthing him. Theo protests that’s what the audience want and Ryder agrees to reassess if views go down. He also insists no mention of Chloe. Theo gets a text from Justin summoning him to the surf club and they agree to think up ideas on the way. When they get there, Justin admits he may have overstated the urgency: He wants to teach Theo to surf. Ryder leaves to pick up Marilyn from the hospital. Theo tries to come up with excuses but Justin has arranged a board and a wetsuit and sends him to get changed.

At the hospital, Martha has been moved to a different room. She complains she has a headache but stops Alf going to get a doctor. Roo arrives with Logan who stays to chat to her. Roo summons Alf into the corridor and tells him that Kieran isn’t a match; they’re still waiting on the results for her. Later, Roo tells Logan she’s going to get lunch for Alf. Ryder and Marilyn appear; Marilyn snaps at Ryder for carrying her bags, before explaining she’s having a hard time balancing. They see Logan, who explains he’s visiting Martha. Marilyn half-thanks half-insults him by saying he got it right for once in putting her onto Professor Hughes. She wishes him luck for the tribunal tomorrow, hoping they’ll work out what happened. In the sideroom, Alf is doing the crossword with Martha. She tells him they need to make plans. Alf realises she means a funeral and refuses to discuss it.

Justin and Theo have finished up their session on the beach. Although Theo seems less than inspired by the experience, he expresses surprise when Justin says they’ll do it every day, noting no-one has ever taken the time to teach him something before. Meanwhile, Ryder pulls up near the beach with Marilyn. He wonders what they’re doing there since he thought they were going home, then realises she doesn’t want to be alone. He offers to call Mackenzie and cancel his shift but Marilyn says she’ll just go to the Diner and talk to Irene.

Alf tries to make out that Martha isn’t thinking clearly. A priest comes in, having been called by Martha. Alf is uncomfortable but leaves them alone. Later, Roo arrives and finds Alf sitting in the corridor. The priest exits Martha’s room and Alf tells Roo that she’s planning her funeral. He doesn’t feel able to see her right now so Roo goes in alone.

Theo arrives at Salt to see Ryder, who asks how the surf lesson went. Theo claims he aced it but isn’t keen for Ryder to ask Justin for confirmation. They throw ideas around for the next challenge: Ryder suggests trick basketball shots, Theo suggests a shopping trolley race, an ice bath or dropping a watermelon off the lighthouse. Mackenzie cuts in, saying their videos are aimed at guys. Theo thinks there’s appeal for ladies (meaning him) but Mackenzie says if there’s no female subscribers then they’re missing out on half the market. The pair double-check and confirm that most of their subscribers and commenters are guys. They ask Mackenzie what she’d want and Mackenzie says for Ryder to do his job. Logan comes in and tells Mackenzie that things aren’t good with Martha. She suggests they grab dinner at hers.

Justin comes into the Diner and finds Marilyn sitting on her own. She explains she went there to see Irene but she’s not there. She clears the table and asks Justin what she can get him; he reminds her she doesn’t work there anymore. They sit and Marilyn thanks Justin for looking out for her. She asks about Leah; Justin notes VJ’s better but Leah’s enjoying looking after him and Luc. Marilyn hopes to get her job back. Meanwhile, Logan and Mackenzie are finishing off dinner. Logan notes the Stewarts are pinning their hopes on Roo being a match and Mackenzie says she’d do the same for Dean and her mum. Logan says he was hoping Marilyn would withdraw the complaint. Mackenzie invites him to stay the night but he says he needs to be up early for the tribunal. She kisses him goodbye.

Roo finds Alf on the pier with his fishing rod. He says he couldn’t sleep and she admits she couldn’t either. Alf thinks Martha has given up and stopped fighting. Roo says they have to support her if she wants to plan things. Both admit that they’re scared. Next morning, Ryder is at the garage with Theo. He isn’t keen on being there but Theo says he’s visited Ryder at work plenty of times and they need to come up with an idea for the challenge. Justin turns up and reveals he’s bought Theo a surfboard, which both Theo and Ryder are impressed with.

Roo meets Logan on the beach and tells him there’s good news from the transplant co-ordinator: She’s a match. They hug.
