Mackenzie and Logan run into each other outside the surf club. She asks how he’s handling being head of the ED and he asks her about Bella. Mackenzie admits she’s put off talking to her about getting another shift. Up in Salt, Matthew asks Mia why she disappeared. Mia reminds him his parents wanted her to have a termination. Matthew says he looked for her but no-one was talking. Mia says she wanted a fresh start. Matthew says he’s had to live with knowing he might have a child out there and asks her to at least give him a ten minute conversation.
Marilyn is pouring herself a glass of wine. Irene arrives at the house and calls it a party for one. Marilyn says she’s allowed to drink in her own house. Irene tries to talk to her about the rosters but Marilyn declares she doesn’t work at the Diner anymore and her interest in it has evaporated. She says she has something else planned to pay the bills. At the Diner, Ryder notes they’re actually on top of things and tells Chloe that with the money from the challenges and the orders they’re getting closer to paying off their debts. Chloe is looked forward to not having to do it anymore. Irene arrives and asks Ryder to go home and keep an eye on Marilyn. He is reluctant to leave Chloe but Irene says she can help her and Chloe is happy for him to go.
Ryder tries to convince Marilyn to go upstairs and sleep. He gives her a glass of water and manages to set her up on the sofa with a blanket. Marilyn takes his hand and asks him to stay with her. Ryder settles down on the floor. Back at Salt, Matthew has told Mia that he’s a barrister. He says it hasn’t left him time for a serious relationship and he doesn’t have any children aside from theirs. Mia snaps that Chloe isn’t his and Matthew picks up on the name. Mia refuses to let him see her, saying they’ve been fine without him until now. Matthew agrees to leave town tomorrow. Logan and Mackenzie have been watching the altercation from the bar and wonder what it was all about.
Next morning, Matthew and Chloe unknowingly pass each other outside the Diner. Irene chases after Chloe, calling out that she’s forgotten her phone. Matthew hears her name and stops. Irene and Chloe comment on the fact they haven’t been able to get hold of Ryder. Matthew offers to help Chloe with what she’s carrying but Chloe says her car’s right there. At the surf club, Mackenzie checks on Mia, saying she saw her last night. Mia says Matthew was a rep who gave her some faulty gym equipment and she won’t see him again.
At the Diner, Irene and Chloe still haven’t heard from Ryder. Chloe notes she’ll have to do the deliveries on her own. Matthew has been sat at a table nearby. He approaches Irene and says it’s good to see young people making something of themselves, asking about Chloe’s catering business. Irene gives him a card with Chloe’s phone number and e-mail. Back at the Stewart house, Ryder wakes up and tries to prise his hand out of Marilyn’s. She wakes up as well and is surprised that he stayed with her. Ryder finds his phone and is shocked by how late it is and how many missed calls he’s got from Irene and Chloe. He wants to head down there but Marilyn insists he has to help her with something first.
Soon after, Ryder is setting up a billboard near the pier, covering up the one for the bait shop and advertising Marilyn’s tarot reading business. Irene looks on in bewilderment. Marilyn tells her to go back to the Diner if she doesn’t want a reading, then sends Ryder to put another sign up in the car park. Meanwhile, Matthew goes to see Mia at the gym and tells her that either she tells Chloe about him or he will, saying he’s got her number and knows what she looks like. Mia reminds him he promised to leave. Matthew says things have changed now and he’s trying to be reasonable. Mia says she doesn’t want Chloe to know she’s the product of a sexual assault.
Matthew follows Mia to a park area, saying she can’t just throw around an accusation like that. Mia says he led her to the bedroom when she was too drunk to walk. Matthew says she wanted him to take her there to lie down and thought they both wanted what happened. Mia says she never consented and that’s not a good look for a lawyer. She tells him never to come near her again. At the Parata house, Ryder apologises to Chloe for not helping and they briefly discuss Marilyn. Mia turns up and Ryder goes home to get a shower. Mia asks Chloe if she’s got any new clients, claiming she recommended her to someone at the gym. She says she loves Chloe, who’s the best thing she’s ever done. Chloe jokingly asks if Mia’s dying.
At Salt, Irene tells Logan and Mackenzie about Marilyn’s tarot business, saying she’s isolating herself from her friends and too afraid to sleep. Mackenzie recalls Marilyn clinging to her when she found her. Logan notes John’s worried too but he can’t do anything unless Marilyn comes to the hospital to be examined. Irene and Mackenzie suggests he goes look at her. Logan goes to Marilyn’s stand, asking for a general reading and giving her the $60 she requests. He gets her to shuffle the cards instead of him. The first card is the Magician, which she notes could refer to deception.
Inside the Diner, Irene frets to Mackenzie and considers going to clean tables to check on them. Mackenzie convinces her to sit down and ponders Logan might not find anything wrong. Irene says that could be worse. Meanwhile, Marilyn draws the Ace of Cups which she says refers to his subconscious and an issue he hasn’t dealt with. Logan asks her about her history of tarot cards and gets her to recall parts of the reading. Marilyn realises he’s checking up on her and Irene was behind it. She walks away angrily.
