Extended Summary

John runs into Dean outside the surf club and comments on him being up and about. Dean says it’ll be a while before he can surf again but he has other people covering. Ziggy runs up and they explain she’s taking the classes. John points out that teaching is different from doing. Dean admits he had experience but Ziggy doesn’t think teaching River Boys counts. Inside, Bella gives Nikau his banana and spiritula smoothie. Nikau gets a text about a payment plan and Bella says he’ll hear if there’s news about Tane. The surfing students, Lissa and Jess, turn up and Jess takes a photo of herself with Nikau. They are disappointed to learn he isn’t taking the lesson. Ziggy turns up and takes the pair out to the beach. Dean sends Nikau with them, which Bella suspects is in order to spy.

Alf, Mackenzie and Logan are standing by the now comatose Marilyn. Logan says it’s not a stroke or cardiac issue and he doesn’t know what the outcome will be. Alf realises he’s saying she could die. Roo runs into Alf and gets the news about Marilyn. They go to Martha’s room where she is now conscious. She can’t remember anything after Alf convincing her to attend the dinner at Salt. Alf says they should have gone with her first instinct. At the Diner, Irene is talking to Mackenzie about how Marilyn was fine yesterday. John comes in and initially thinks they’re talking about Martha. He is shocked to hear that Marilyn’s in hospital and annoyed that no-one told him, saying he still cares about her.

Bella briefly looks at the class registration forms. Dean tells her she’s got nothing to worry about. Bella isn’t too happy about the girls perving on Nik, saying him being back on socials has brought stuff up. She hasn’t talked to him because of both Tane and it being too hard. Dean jokes she needs to date someone more ugly. Down on the beach, Ziggy directs Nikau, Lissa and Jess to lie down on the board and then pop up. Nikau apologises to Ziggy for being a distraction, as Lissa and Jess keep snapping photos of themselves and him. Ziggy just sees it as a challenge.

John arrives at the hospital and asks Roo about Marilyn. She tells him Martha’s woken up. John goes to see Marilyn. Logan says it’s family only and John explains he’s her ex-husband. Logan is consulting with a toxicologist in the city. On the beach, Ziggy is trying unsuccessfully to teach Lissa and Jess how to pop up again. Nikau again offers to go but Ziggy thinks she needs to get them out on the water so they will have to concentrate. Nikau says other teachers start off on the sand but Ziggy says she needs to adapt.

Bella is looking at photos the girls have posted of Nikau. Dean suggests she go and join the lesson for free. Bella says it’s a test of willpower and Dean says she’s torturing herself. Mackenzie comes in and comments on her tough day. Meanwhile, when they don’t pay attention to her explaining how to strap onto a board, Ziggy loses her patience and takes the girls’ phone. She says they’re going onto the water. Nikau protests again but Ziggy says this is how Ben taught her. Nikau refuses to go with them.

Roo tells Martha she has pictures of the event and Alf says it was a success. Martha asks how everyone else is. Alf says Irene’s back at work but, when she asks about Marilyn, they admit she is in ICU. Logan comes in and says Martha’s lungs are clear but her kidney function is failing. They need to send her to a renal unit in the city for dialysis. Later, Alf is wishing Martha could be treated there. Martha says Roo will go with her and Alf can stay and look after Marilyn. After Roo and Logan have gone, Martha admits she’s scared and Alf says they’ll talk on the phone all the time.

Nikau carries Lissa back to the beach with Jess filming them. Ziggy says she should have been paying attention and tries to get them to come back for another lesson. She takes Nikau aside and tells him they can’t let Dean know about this, calling it just a bump on the head. She deduces Nikau is there to spy on her and says they’re trying to take the load off Dean. Back at the surf club, Mackenzie fills Dean and Bella in on what happened with Marilyn. She says it was good to have Logan there for support. Ziggy and Nikau come back and claim everything went well. Bella suggests she and Nikau hang out together after work and talk.

Logan turns up at the Diner flat and chats to Mackenzie about the frustration of not really knowing what’s going on with Marilyn. Mackenzie says it must be hard having to hand over the case to someone else. Logan says that actually he’s been offered a full-time job as the head of ED, which means he’s sticking around. Down in the Diner, John is talking to Irene about Marilyn’s condition and asks Nikau if the police have said anything to him about who did it. Irene tries to change the subject but John insists someone’s getting away with it.

At the surf club, Dean asks Ziggy about her claim that nothing happened, showing her the photo of Nikau carrying Lissa. At the Parata house, Nikau talks on the phone to Mia or Ari about Tane and the police investigation. Bella tries to talk to him but Nikau is focused on the amount of people in hospital and is convinced that Felicity’s responsible. Bella tells him to let the police handle it, saying Cash wouldn’t get away with hiding something as she knows from experience. Nikau says Felicity told him Tane would get what he deserved, so now she is.
