Extended Summary
Near the surf club, Mackenzie fills John and Ryder in on what’s happening with Dean, saying he’s getting better. Ryder asks what’s happening with the board shop. Mackenzie says she hadn’t thought about it and to close it for now. She walks away and passes Tane, giving him an update on Dean. Tane doesn’t look interested and Mackenzie asks what’s up. They go for a walk and Tane fills Mackenzie in on Ziggy, noting she doesn’t love him the way she loves Dean. Mackenzie says Dean’s lucky he’s already in hospital and Tane says Dean did nothing wrong. He notes he should have listened to Amber and is annoyed at all Ziggy’s talk about honesty when she couldn’t even be honest with herself.
Marilyn arrives home, bringing Grace with her. Alf, Roo and Martha are all gathered around Kieran, who has his bags packed and asks them to say goodbye to Irene and Jasmine for him. Roo is giving Kieran a lift to the station and Martha has arranged a job with the local baker for him. Alf shakes Kieran’s hand and wishes him luck, while Martha notes they’ll be down soon to work on renovations. Kieran says his goodbyes. At the surf club, Leah and Justin discuss Justin’s plans to do paperwork tonight. John puts a Closed sign on the board shop. Ryder is unhappy about the situation and thinks they should try and keep it going for Dean. John says they have their own jobs.
Roo is chatting to Marilyn about Kieran at the Diner. Alf and Martha turn up and say Marilyn texted them to come. Marilyn makes a feeble attempt to act innocent. Roo is still rather waspish about them not supporting Kieran so Martha suggests they go for a walk. Later, Marilyn wonders to Leah and Irene whether Roo will forgive her for interfering. Justin comes in and tells Leah that the landlord is selling the garage.
John sarcastically points out to a couple of customers near the board shop that it’s closed. Ryder still thinks they should keep it open. John says he has enough on. Tane turns up and Ryder asks him about Nikau before again suggesting they help Dean. Tane isn’t interested but Ryder persists, suggesting he do it to help out Ziggy since they’re friends. Cash comes downstairs as Tane is getting angry and tries to lead him away, but Tane pushes him off him, causing him to drop his pizza. Later, Cash comes back with another pizza and suggests Tane doesn’t like his uniform, offering him a beer. Tane refuses and leaves. John and Ryder come over to Cash, who offers to share the pizza with them.
At the Diner, Roo is laughing with Irene and Marilyn. Alf thinks whatever Martha said worked but Martha is still worried about both her and Kieran. Later, Justin is on the phone as Irene serves him and Leah. He says the real estate agent claims notification was sent a month ago. Leah asks what the best case scenario is and Justin says the new owner might want to keep him on as a tenant, but might also put the rent up, noting he’s fallen behind at times. The worst case scenario is the new owner demolishes it to redevelop the land. Leah suggests they could buy it and wants to call a lawyer about getting the money Susie stole back.
Ryder suggests getting one of the juice bar workers to run the board shop but John says they’re part-time students who need to work there. Cash asks why Ryder couldn’t do it. Ryder has a full set of shifts at Salt but Cash suggests he has a roster. Cash wants them to get him three names for a touch footy team. They don’t think anyone will be interested but he challenges them to do it. At the Diner, Justin is still down as he helps Irene out with tidying up. Leah tells Irene that it’s a shame this has happened when they were finally back in a good place: The fireworks felt like a fresh start. She considers calling Justin’s counsellor but Irene thinks she should take a step back and let him deal with it.
Tane turns up at the Diner flat with a box of beer bottles. He tells Mackenzie he’s thought of a great way to spend the night and kisses her. Later however, she is bringing him coffee on the balcony. Tane apologises about before. Mackenzie is tempted but says she learnt the hard way that alcohol and hook-ups doesn’t bury the pain. She thinks they need to concentrate on their families and, when he asks about Dean, says Ziggy wasn’t with him. Tane decides to head home. Arriving back at the house, he sits outside. After a few moments’ hesitation, he cracks open another one of the beers, then calls someone to arrange a big night.
Next morning, Ryder makes an unsuccessful attempt to enlist Justin in helping out with the board shop and surf lessons. Leah offers to ask around. She sees Cash and asks him about their chances of getting the money back. Cash says he can ask for an update but they shouldn’t rely on it. Outside the Diner, Roo gets off the phone from Kieran, telling Alf he has his first shift at the baker’s today. Martha turns up and says she has an idea.
Leah and Justin come up from the beach. Justin is defeatist and thinks he’s going to lose the garage. John watches them from a distance and goes over to Leah, who explains the situation to him. She is worried it will derail Justin’s recovery.
