Extended Summary
Ryder turns up at the Parata house with a coffee for Chloe and checks that Tane isn’t at home. Chloe says Ari just texted to say Mia might be allowed home today, while they’ve been told Nikau will get worse before he gets better. Ryder notes that Mackenzie told him about Tane and Ziggy splitting up. He convinces Chloe to come out. Meanwhile, Martha leads Alf and Roo into the Diner and gets them, Irene and Marilyn to sit down. She explains she wants to put on a show and fundraiser to raise money and awareness about living with mental illness, noting she’s been inspired by Roo helping her and Kieran. Everyone is on board with the idea and Alf wonders where they start. Marilyn jokes that Roo will already have a list of ideas in her head. Roo asks Irene for a pen and paper.
Leah is continuing to explain the situation to John at the surf club. Justin comes over and says the lawyer confirmed that it would take them ages to get the money back. John suggests the garage might not sell quickly but Justin doesn’t want to deal with that uncertainty and goes to look for new premises. Back at the Diner, Alf suggests a sausage sizzle but Martha says she wants to tie it into the mental health angle. Irene suggests putting on a play or a bake-off. Roo writes the ideas down as Alf heads off to the bait shop.
Cash sees Jasmine at the surf club and asks if she’s going for a run. Jasmine sarcastically asks if he’s interrogating her and walks off. John appears with the cones Cash wanted. He says he has an idea what to do with the money but doesn’t elaborate. Outside the Diner, Ryder suggests he and Chloe go for a movie or a picnic. Alf asks how her family is. Chloe says no better but no worse and heads inside to get a table. Alf wonders if he put his foot in it but Ryder says she’s been like that all morning and he doesn’t know how to cheer her up. Alf suggests asking her what she wants to do.
Inside, Irene and Marilyn suggest to Leah that it makes Justin feel better to look for an alternative premises even if he might not have to move, with Marilyn commenting that he might find something even better. Ryder comes in and sits with Chloe, asking what she wants to do. Chloe has found the flyer for the touch footy comp and suggests they do it together. Ryder feigns enthusiasm. They turn up in a park area and are greeted by Jasmine. She wonders who the coach is, finding out a moment later when Cash appears with three more players, noting Ryder found the players they needed. Jasmine promptly walks away. Cash chases after her and tries to get her to stay. He says they can’t avoid each other forever and she shouldn’t stop playing because of him, plus she can give him stick. Jasmine still refuses so Cash points out they need six people for a team so he’ll have to put a stop to it without her.
Leah is serving John at the Diner as Justin comes in. He says there were lot of great options and Marilyn says she had a feeling there would be…then shuts up as Justin says they were all out of his price range. Irene suggests Leah take a break so she and Justin can talk it over. John comments with Irene on how the pair can’t catch a break. Meanwhile, Roo and Martha join Alf at the surf club. Martha has had an idea to do a series of artworks about mental illness and auction them off. Roo has suggested they ask her art class to contribute. Alf thinks it’s a great idea.
Irene serves Leah and Justin on the veranda. Moments later, John joins them and says he’s got a pitch for them. Justin refuses to borrow money from him but John suggests he buys the garage building, becoming Justin’s new landlord. He leaves it with them to think about. Meanwhile, Jasmine has agreed to stay and Cash divides the players into two groups for drills. Ryder and Chloe both catch the ball when Cash throws it to them but Jasmine makes no effort, letting it fall next to her, and also puts in minimal effort while running. However, she is soon throwing herself into it more, although she protests when Cash calls her offside. Another player then collides with Cash, hurting his ankle. Ryder convinces a reluctant Jasmine to ask him how it is.
Jasmine helps Cash into a chair outside the Diner and they explain to Marilyn it’s a sprain. Jasmine tells Cash he needs a first aid kit. Marilyn goes to get some ice. As she comes through, Irene, Leah and Justin are discussing John’s offer. Justin worries that John’s doing it out of guilt. Irene suggests Justin could buy John out when he gets the money back but Justin isn’t sure about mixing business with friendship.
Chloe and Ryder arrive back at the house, with Ryder trying to look enthusiastic as Chloe notes the season could last three or four months and the training half a year. She gets a text from Ari saying Mia is staying in another night and decides to go and see her while Ryder checks the board shop. Chloe thanks him for being the best boyfriend today. Meanwhile, Leah and Justin meet up with John by the beach. Justin says he can’t take John’s offer and John says he won’t push it, driving on. Justin tells Leah that the garage will take a while to sell so they’re got time to come up with a new plan.
Martha and Roo explain to Alf that her class loved the idea but were worried about misrepresenting mental illness because of their lack of experience of it. Martha suggests she can do all the art but they aren’t sure she’ll be quick enough. Ryder chimes in and suggests they get Bella to help out since art isn’t just painting, plus she could use a distraction. Meanwhile, Justin is telling Leah that he shouldn’t have freaked out before since there’s no rush: The garage might not sell and the new owner might not want him to leave. However, he then gets a call from the real estate agent saying the garage has sold.
Marilyn brings ice for Cash’s ankle but he is concerned when she suggests he might need to go to hospital, saying he’s fine and walking to prove it. Jasmine notes he’s limping with the wrong ankle and he admits he exaggerated the injury to spend time with her. Jasmine is unimpressed and leaves. Some time later, Jasmine and Cash run into each other again while clearing up the equipment. Cash admits the whole thing was a plan to impress her and says he won’t anymore. Jasmine agrees to one date, saying it’s just because she feels sorry for him. However, she smiles as she walks away.
