Extended Summary

Dean and Ziggy run into each other on the beach and compare notes on their success in the competition. Tane watches from nearby, not looking too happy about the pair’s closeness. Ziggy notices him and they arrange to go for a workout. At the Diner, Chloe encourages Ryder to go and see Mackenzie, saying there’s no point them both being out of work. Ryder agrees to talk to her, if only to get a reference. Jasmine comes in and tells Irene she’s not been able to get the tarot reading out of her head. Marilyn admits the tower card can mean terrible things and Irene cuts her short, asking if this is supposed to be helping. After Jasmine has gone, Marilyn explains she was trying to say the card represents the past not the future. Irene suggests leading with that next time.

Irene joins Jasmine outside the Diner and advises her not to listen to Marilyn. Jasmine is still feeling down about the idea of her future not getting any better and decides to go to the gym to take her mind off things. Meanwhile, Ziggy and Tane arrive at the surf club. Ziggy immediately approaches Dean and badgers him to put a clipping of the two of them as champions up on the board. Jasmine arrives and asks Tane if he’s there for a workout. Tane says he will be if Ziggy’s ever free. When Ziggy finally finishes talking to Dean, Tane says he’s not in the mood for a workout and tells her to go ahead.

At the Parata house, Chloe is complaining to Tane about being unemployed. Tane says that Mackenzie’s had a hard time lately. Chloe says Ryder kept Salt going while Mackenzie was ill. Tane says Mackenzie lost Ari’s baby and to keep it to herself. Chloe realises that was while she was off sick: She lost her boyfriend and her baby and Mia’s living the life she could have had. Realising Ryder’s gone to see Mackenzie, she rushes out. Ryder turns up at Salt and asks Mackenzie about the texts. She points out he didn’t respond to them and isn’t keen to admit she needs him.

Ziggy is doing a workout at the gym and asks Jasmine if she’s doing it right. Jasmine admits she doesn’t know and offers to get a trainer. She asks Ziggy about Tane and Ziggy realises he wasn’t happy about the photo and her gushing to Dean about it. Meanwhile, Ryder is insisting Mackenzie needs her but Mackenzie says she needs him to do what she says. She seems prepared to give him a job but shuts the conversation down when Ryder mentions rehiring Chloe. Chloe arrives but Mackenzie orders them both out, along with all the customers.

Ryder and Chloe discuss the incident outside, with Chloe indicating there’s more going on than Ryder knows. Dean and Jasmine come along and get filled in. Meanwhile, Tane is pumping weights at home, listening to music. Ziggy comes along and apologises for not realising how he felt, saying she was just trying to help Dean’s business and would have done the same for Jasmine or Mackenzie. Tane admits he’s not used to feeling jealous. He notes he needs a shower and Ziggy offers to join him.

Dean and Jasmine head up to the now-deserted restaurant. A server emerges from the kitchen, unaware of what’s going on, and Mackenzie kicks him out too, before refusing to discuss her actions. Jasmine tells Dean to let her handle it, since he has lessons to do. Mackenzie starts pouring shots and Jasmine reluctantly joins her. Meanwhile, Ryder and Chloe are walking on the beach, Chloe has filled Ryder in and suggests they give Mackenzie space to be angry. She doesn’t think she’ll get her job back but suggests Ryder apply for his. Ryder doesn’t want to go back without her however.

Mackenzie and Jasmine continue their drinking session, with Mackenzie lamenting the fact that she’s wasted an afternoon’s trade and a bottke of scotch on top of everything else. Jasmine empathises with thinking you can see your future and then having it torn away from you. She heads to the Diner and tells Marilyn she wants a full tarot reading. Irene advises her to sober up first and offers her some food. Nearby, Ryder and Chloe debate what they actually are going to do if they’re not going to work at Salt. Ryder recalls Mackenzie headhunting him from the juice bar and they decide to work out what their skills are.

At the Diner flat, Dean leaves a message for Amber saying that he’s got Jai’s favourite and wondering when they’ll be back. Ziggy turns up, having had the article framed. She says she found a scrapbook of Ben’s surfing achievements once and took it to school for show and tell, so Jai might want to do the same. Dean agrees to consider it and invites her to stay for a beer and to watch sports. Later, Ziggy gives Dean a mock interview about being surf champion while Dean wonders why he hasn’t heard back from Amber.

Mackenzie turns up at the Parata house in a mood, demanding to see Ari so she can tell him what he’s done to her. Tane thinks it’s best she’s gone before he gets back, getting her to follow him by taking her bottle of scotch. They end up at the farm house, where Mackenzie thanks Tane and begins wondering if she chose the wrong brother. Tane is uncomfortable but Mackenzie says he wanted this once and kisses him. Tane pushes her away.
