Extended Summary

Mackenzie is standing by the beach and Ari surprises her from behind. She says that she’s worried about Dean. Bella and Nikau come along and asks if Bella can stay the night. Ari is fine with it and Bella notes Dean doesn’t seem to want her around. After the youngsters have moved on, Ari asks Mackenzie how bad it is. At the garage, Ziggy is trying to work and Dean comments on her losing her 10mm socket after he bought her a whole set. Ziggy takes a call from an unhappy customer whose car was due last week and isn’t happy about Dean offering to fix it. Tane appears, to Dean’s frustration, and says he came to help Ziggy. Ziggy tells Dean to leave.

Nikau has got Bella’s bag together while Bella is writing a note. Dean comes round and Bella asks if he’s okay, saying she can stay if he wants her to. Dean tells her to do what she likes and goes to the fridge as if they’re not there. Bella and Nikau leave. Dean looks at her note, in which she explains where she is and says she’s there if he needs her. At the garage, Tane brings Ziggy a drink but she says she needs help, not hydrating. He offers to sort out the part orders, saying it’s his fault she’s short-handed. Ziggy eventually agrees to him going to Yabbie Creek to get some parts.

At Salt, Mackenzie is telling Ari that it seems it’s up to her to look out for Dean and he seems to be angry all the time. Ari recalls Dean was like that when they were first in prison together. He gets a text but tells Mackenzie it’s Nikau asking for money, when in fact it’s a photo of Paul in the porsche with a message to call him. Downstairs in the surf club, John is on the phone to Cynthia, arranging dinner together and checking she’s not a vegetarian. He tries to brag to Ari that he has a date but Ari says he has other things to think about. Ari gets another text from Paul, saying they need to meet about a job and not to send his girlfriend this time.

Tane turns up at the flat to see Dean and tries to get him to stay away from Ziggy. Dean wonders what it has to do with Tane, who says Ziggy did him a favour by giving him a job. Dean says the same thing will happen to Tane as happened to him: Ziggy will give him a job, they’ll try and fix each other, and they’ll end up in bed. Tane says that’s not why he’s helping her. Dean says he told himself that once. Back at the Parata house, Ari asks Bella and Nikau if they’ve seen Tane, claiming it’s to do with the rent. Nikau suggests he and Bella go see a movie or play pool, saying he’s making it his mission to make her smile. Bella thinks that’s a stupid mission but responds to his suggesting they go for a walk.

John is giving Mackenzie very detailed instructions for a table at Salt, saying he wants the best table, out of the breeze because he wants candles, and cloth napkins and champagne (but not French champagne). Dean returns to work but shuts down Mackenzie’s attempts to talk to him, saying he doesn’t need her or the Paratas’ opinions. Outside, John practices introducing himself, unaware that Bella and Nikau are coming up behind him. They ask him what’s going on and he explains he has a date that he met on a dating application and is taking her to Salt.

Tane arrives back at the garage with the parts. Ziggy notes the phone hasn’t rung while he was gone and Tane says that’s because he redirected the garage calls to his phone. Ziggy says she owes him and Tane points out he already owed her, although he’s quick to leave. Back at the Parata house, Ari is pacing as Tane arrives back, saying he only just got Ari’s message. Ari explains Paul has another job for them and he’s intending to tell him to get lost.

Ari and Tane wait in the bush as Paul and Leon pull up in the porsche. Paul comments on the car before deciding to talk business. Ari and Tane point out that the car was meant to pay off the debt but Paul says that deal was with Mackenzie, not them. He insists on one more job: Reefton Lakes League Club, and he’ll even provide the artillery. Realising he’s talking about an armed robbery, Ari and Tane refuse. Ari says if they contact him again, he’ll call the police. Paul and Leon leave.

Dean finds Ziggy waiting at the board shop. She says his behaviour’s got to stop and this isn’t how she wants their friendship to work. Dean is unimpressed with the term and says her boyfriend’s already made that clear. Ziggy tells him to leave her alone. Soon after, Dean is drinking at Salt but Mackenzie cuts him off almost immediately. She says she’s not going to watch him do this to himself. Dean retorts that he’ll go somewhere where they won’t cut him off. He exits, brushing past John, who has arrived spruced up and with a large bunch of flowers. Mackenzie notes he’s a bit early but shows him to his table and introduces him to a waitress. Meanwhile, Dean speeds past the sign into Mangrove River.

Bella and Nikau arrive back at the Paratas’, laughing about John’s date. Tane goes to have a shower and Ari tells Bella that Colby’s smarter than most people in prison and will be able to look after himself. He gets a text but is dismissive about it, giving Nikau money to take Bella out. Bella suggests they spy on John at Salt. Soon after, Bella and Nikau are outside the surf club. Bella wonders if Ari was telling the truth about Colby. Nikau is more worried about the fact Ari seemed to be hiding something, saying his uncles promised not to keep secrets, so if they are it must be something bad.

Ari shows Tane the photos he’s just received, showing them handing over boxes and receiving cash. Ari notes that must have been the plan from the start: Get them to do a job to set them up. Tane asks what they’re going to do.
