Extended Summary
Amber tells Dean that they were never really a thing and didn’t bother much with family planning, noting when she found out she was pregnant she bailed because it was her choice. Dean is annoyed that she’s telling him now and Amber says she didn’t want his son to meet him in jail. His phone rings and Amber tells him to answer it. It’s Ari, who asks where he is: Tane chimes in that they have to go and Mackenzie suggests they pick him up. Dean says they’ll have to go without him. Ari and Tane get in their car, and Mackenzie gets in the back, announcing she’s going with them: Bella won’t listen to them but knows her. Ari asks if she’s sure and she retorts that she doesn’t look unsure. She tells them to swing by hers so she can quickly pack.
Nikau is driving himself and Bella down a mountain road in a battered ute. Bella notices him smiling and tells him to pull over, saying it’s not a holiday: They’re on the run from the police. Nikau says no-one will find them out here, since even they don’t know where they are. Bella smiles as well and notes he’s in love with his new vehicle. At the surf club, Ziggy overhears Alf complaining. Roo and Marilyn invite him for breakfast but he notes he’s meant to be working there yet there’s a queue outside the bait shop because Nikau hasn’t turned up again. Willow finds Ziggy wrestling with a drawer and she explains about her fight with Dean.
Colby arrives at the police station and is greeted by Angelo, who asks how Bella went with the counsellor. Colby says she’s not up to giving a statement. Angelo says he still needs to see her; he offers to let Colby go home to check on her but Colby declines. Out in the mountains, Nikau pulls the ute to a halt, saying he’s determined to find the waterfall that the guy who sold them the car told them about. Fishing out a map, Bella says you need water for a waterfall, then stops as she sees the view from the cliff edge and is gob-smacked.
Ziggy and Willow are stunned when Dean comes into the surf club, wondering why he isn’t looking for Bella. Dean says plans have changed and he’ll explain later, before making both of them uncomfortable by telling Willow he needs to talk to her first. They head into the gym where Dean asks Willow about her nights out with Amber and if Amber ever mentioned she has a son and it’s his.
Ziggy is at the counter in Salt as Marilyn and Roo, sat at a table, discuss the fact they haven’t had a chance to catch up with Angelo since he’s been back. They recall when he owned the restaurant; Roo wonders if he’s still with Nicole and Marilyn says Irene told her no. Roo sees someone going out and thinks it was Evan. Marilyn suggests his ghost is trying to contact her but Roo dismisses it. Dean joins Ziggy and says he’s still trying to wrap his head round something. Ziggy walks away. At the police station, Angelo nearly catches Colby leaving Bella another message. He suggests he go see her at home or talk to her counsellor. Colby says Angelo gave him 72 hours. Angelo says that was last night.
Bella and Nikau are relaxing on the cliff edge. Nikau asks if she’s ever seen a really big waterfall, recalling how his parents took him to Kitekite Falls in New Zealand and his dad taught him to swim there. Bella suggests he could take her one day. Nikau turns on the music in the car and convinces her to dance with him. Meanwhile, Ari, Tane and Mackenzie have arrived at the small airport and rented a four wheel drive. They ponder where to start, with both Mackenzie and Tane believing Bella and Nikau are in love. Ari says they won’t have got far without wheels and Mackenzie concludes they’d need somewhere to stay overnight.
Dean approaches Ziggy at the surf club and tells her he wants to tell her what’s going on but it’s hard. He makes a stammering attempt to say something but Ziggy gets fed up and walks away. In the gym, Amber is taking John through an exercise session when Willow takes her aside to talk, asking why she didn’t tell her. Amber awkwardly says it never came up. Willow asks if she’s sure it’s Dean’s. Amber says that “it” is her son Jai and she’s certain. She recalls that she was scared and didn’t know what she was doing, but when Jai arrived he was the best thing that ever happened to her.
Bella notes they need food and water and wonders if there’s anything on the map. Nik turns his phone on to find a map and gets a long list of text messages. Bella tells him to turn it off. Nikau feels bad about how worried his uncles are and that he didn’t leave a note but Bella says if he calls them it’ll be traced: His dad taught him to swim, hers taught her to disappear. She asks if he’s sure about this, since it’s forever, and Nikau says he is. Meanwhile, Ari, Mackenzie and Tane arrive at a campsite. Ari shows Nikau’s photo to a man who confirms he was there with a girl, saying he sold them an old jalopy and pointed out local spots for sightseeing. He circles the spots on a map, adding that he told them not to go too far off the beaten track because the car’s a bomb.
Colby is furious to find Dean at the surf club, saying he trusted him to find Bella. Dean says he had important things to do there and, with both of them in a foul mood, they square up. Colby challenges Dean to make him go, Dean starts pushing him and Ziggy and Willow have to step in. Ziggy takes Dean back to the flat and demands he explain now. Dean says he has a kid.
