Extended Summary

Ziggy is shocked when Ben walks into the surf club. He doesn’t give any details of where he’s been and Ziggy doesn’t get to ask much since at that moment Karen comes storming down the stairs, followed by Dean and Mackenzie. Karen goes outside and Ziggy offers to talk to her. She finds her a short way away; Karen thinks Dean sent her but Ziggy suggests it might be best if he stays away. She says Dean didn’t want her to find out like this and was trying to protect her. Karen says they’re all in it together and Dean’s playing happy families without her. Ziggy says Karen’s the most important person to Dean but Karen isn’t convinced.

Alf finds Ryder at the Diner, looking at the surfing forecast. Alf reminds Ryder his exams are soon but Ryder points out people keep saying that. Alf relents and offers to give him a driving lesson but Ryder says he’s working in the morning and is hoping to have a surf lesson with Dean in the afternoon. Roo arrives and also asks about revision before trying unsuccessfully to give him uni brochures. She sits with Maggie, who is preoccupied over Ben. Meanwhile, Jasmine has arrived back at the motel. Robbo tries to talk to her, saying he’s getting nowhere with the investigation and she has to leave. Jasmine makes light of it, saying they’re stronger together and she has her own bodyguard, and goes to have a shower.

Mackenzie and Dean are chatting at the surf club. Ryder comes over and tries to ask about the surf lesson but gets short shrift. Ziggy returns and tells Dean about her unsuccessful chat with Karen. Dean goes to look for her. Maggie arrives and Ziggy tells her about seeing Ben, suggesting he’ll call her. Dean finds Karen on the beach but she starts walking away from him. Dean tells her Mackenzie’s not as bad as she thinks, admitting she’s been around for months. He tries to defend not telling her but Karen says she’s never doubted that he loved her before and announces that she’s leaving town.

Ziggy, Mackenzie and Dean are all at Salt. Dean has given up on trying to talk Karen round and decides to go surfing. Ryder unsuccessfully tries to get an invite. Ziggy and Mackenzie reflect on Dean’s stubbornness. Mackenzie decides to go and find Karen. Ziggy asks if she has a death wish. Mackenzie says maybe. Soon after, Karen is walking along the road, laden down with bags. She is pleased when a sports car pulls up alongside her until she sees it’s Mackenzie. Karen starts walking again. Mackenzie says she knows Rick treated Dean and Karen badly and asks if it helps that he did the same to her and her mum. Karen says that it’s a start.

When Jasmine returns, Robbo tells her things have changed: He’s been given a deadline before the gang come after her. Jasmine asks if they have to go to another safe house but Robbo says she has to leave the country, on her own, today. Jasmine is shocked, asking how long she’ll have to be gone for and if they’ll even see each other again. Meanwhile, Maggie is doing weights at the gym and looks at her phone. At the same time, Ben knocks on the door of the farm house. He goes in, calling out for Maggie or Ziggy, and looks around at reminders of his life.

Dean rejoins Ziggy at the surf club and she notes he wasn’t surfing for long. Dean has decided he gave up too easily and should go and find Karen. Ziggy admits that Mackenzie had the same idea. Upstairs, Roo again approaches Ryder with the brochures. She asks if he really doesn’t want to go to uni or if it’s just because she keeps pestering him. Ryder says it’s a bit of both and cuts the conversation short to serve a customer.

Karen is playing with the retractable sunroof on Mackenzie’s car as Mackenzie explains about wanting to bring Rick down and for Dean to help. Karen is more interested in the heated seats but has heard the gist. She notes she’d like to see Rick taken down. Mackenzie says she would too sometimes but she’s got a brother out of it. She asserts that he loves Karen. At the surf club, Dean is deciding to find Karen and Mackenzie and hope they haven’t ripped each other’s heads off. At that moment, Karen and Mackenzie return and Ziggy notes their heads are intact. Dean and Karen head up to Salt after Karen’s asked for a family discount. Mackenzie and Ziggy prepare to follow. Ziggy chats to Maggie first; she is disappointed Ben didn’t call and decides to head home.

Dean and Karen relax in Salt, with Ziggy and Mackenzie at the bar. Karen has warmed to Mackenzie and observes that Dean got a sister without her having to give birth to one, but notes the real issue wasn’t Mackenzie but Dean lying to her. She acknowledges he’s got used to looking out for her and Dean agrees to not do it as much. They call Ziggy and Mackenzie over and Karen asks for food. Meanwhile, Maggie arrives home. She calls out to Ben but is still startled when he appears. He says he needed to talk to her in person.

Jasmine is delaying packing and, when Robbo tries to do it for her, takes the clothes out again. She says nothing could be worse than this. Robbo drags her to the evidence room and scatters the photos of his family’s murder across a surface, saying he never wants to walk into another room like that. He goes and sits on the floor. After a time, Jasmine joins him and says she understands and will go.
