Extended Summary

Alf is washing down a boat outside the bait shop, staring out to sea. Roo sneaks up behind him and startles him, before noting he looks relaxed. He agrees that with John’s new arrangement in place he’s not worrying about the surf club as much. Roo is on her way to mark Year 12 assignments and is stocking up on coffee and also going to the gym first. She runs into Ryder, who shows her a picture of the car he wants to buy. She asks him about the assignment and he says it’s sorted and he’s meeting Raffy. Outside the Morgan house, Tori explains to Justin that the specialist wants to put a suture in but there’s a risk that the procedure could trigger premature labour anyway and the baby wouldn’t survive. Justin thinks she should call Robbo but Tori doesn’t want him rushing back without seeing his parents. Justin thinks it should be his choice. Tori admits she’s scared.

Home alone, Marilyn looks at a photo of herself with, John, Jett and Raffy. She turns some music on and makes a pot of tea with a single cup and a plate of bread. However, she soon turns the music off and goes out, leaving her afternoon tea untouched. Meanwhile, Ryder is showing Raffy the car advert, saying it’s only $2000 and has a good service record. Raffy points out he doesn’t have the money for it or a license but Ryder says he can sort it with more driving prep and extra shifts. They run into Marilyn who tries to get Raffy to go for a walk with her. However, Raffy says she needs to go see Mason about Tori’s scan and agrees to see her tomorrow instead.

Arriving at the surf club, Raffy wonders if Marilyn is lonely with John away and Ryder thinks she’s making the most of the time to herself. She asks about his assignment and he says he’s nearly finished it. After she’s gone however, he takes a call from John and agrees to work. In the gym, Mason is on the phone to Willow, telling her about Robbo’s absence. Raffy briefly chats to a girl and then to Roo, saying she’s done the assignment. She asks Mason about the scan; he says he hasn’t spoken to Tori but Robbo said it went fine. He then reveals he can’t leave work because of Robbo leaving. Raffy offers to do the work in the gym while he sorts the rosters.

Tori tells Justin that she needs to start her maternity leave straightaway but it means she’ll have less time after the baby’s born. Mason and Raffy arrive and Tori dispiritedly remarks on having to take maternity leave early. Mason remarks sarcastically that her life’s hard: Getting the baby she wanted, who’s healthy, and getting paid leave from her dream job. He walks out. Justin follows him to the gym and tells him the truth about the scan and that Robbo doesn’t know. Mason says he’ll apologise to Tori but Justin says first they need to sort out what’s bothering Mason and takes him for a drink.

Alf sees Marilyn sitting on the wharf and goes to join her. She says she’s missing John: She doesn’t begrudge him helping Jett and it’s not that she can’t live without him but she’s feeling lonely. Alf remarks he feels the same way about Martha. Marilyn wonders how a long distance relationship works. At the surf club, Ryder ducks behind the counter when Roo emerges from the gym. She takes a phone call from Alf and says she was just going to get a gelato after her work-out. After Alf mentions Marilyn, she decides to skip it.

Justin and Mason are having a drink at Salt. Mason says he doesn’t want to carry on working at the gym. He’s got a medical degree and up until now he’s been making use of it: Helping Raffy, Jett and Maggie. He’s now got a glimpse of a future where he’s just Robbo’s lackey. Back at the house, Raffy is fussing over Tori, who is lying on the sofa. Justin and Mason turn up and Tori sends Raffy to feed Buddy. Mason says Justin told him about the scan and apologises for what he said. After he’s gone to his room, Justin tells Tori he’s struggling.

Irene and Roo are treating Marilyn to tea at the Diner. They sympathise with her being on her own. Marilyn says John tries to call her every night and she made the decision to not go to the city. Irene suggests she help out in the kitchen later to be busy. Roo gets a text alert that all the assignments are in except two… including Ryder’s. She stops by the bait shop looking for him, explaining to Alf. Alf tells her that he’s going to go and see Martha; he’s going to pack a bag and slip away without telling anyone.

Mason rejoins Tori, who explains Raffy decided a family dinner was in order and took Justin out shopping. She asks his advice on whether to spend 20 weeks on the sofa or have the suture. Mason recommends the latter and she agrees. She asks him to pass her her phone, despite it being on the table next to her. Meanwhile, Justin and Raffy have popped into the Diner to get dessert. Marilyn invites Raffy round for a girls’ night but Raffy explains about the family dinner. Raffy checks with Irene, who confirms Marilyn misses John.

Tori finishes booking her appointment before asking Mason about his problems at the gym. She tells him to hand her the laptop and she’ll help him apply for internships. At the Palmer house, Marilyn is surprised when Raffy turns up, followed by Justin carrying her bag. She says she’s decided to go for the girls’ night in after all…and also to move back in, so they can have them every night. Marilyn is delighted and welcomes her back.

Ryder is serving at the juice bar and ignoring calls from Roo…until she appears in front of him. She takes him into the office where he asks for an extension. Roo refuses, reminding him how hard he fought to be allowed into Year 12. She says he’ll lose 10% of the mark and 10% more for every day he’s late. Ryder protests that he’s eighteen and Roo can’t pick and choose when to play the parent card when she’s never there. Roo tells him he’s got twenty-four hours.
