Dean comes face-to-face with his father. The big IVF day finally arrives for Tori and Robbo. The Summer Bay community get behind Maggie’s new venture.
Extended Summary
Robbo and Jasmine meet up near the beach; Jasmine has just been for a swim. They kiss and Jasmine invites Robbo to join her for a shower. Robbo reluctantly declines: He and Tori could get the go ahead for the IVF at any time so he needs to be “ready”. At the hospital, Tori gives herself an injection in her office. Mason walks in on the tail end of it. Tori confirms they should be harvesting the eggs for the embryos soon and they’ll be doing it there rather than going back to the city since there’s no need for secrecy.
Rick tells Dean that he thought his involvement with Karen was over. Dean shows him the letter he found. Rick says Karen didn’t tell him about the pregnancy until after Dean was born, by which point he was married with a child on the way. Dean says Rick successfully shut Karen up: She never told him who his father was even when he begged her. He realises Rick’s family don’t know about him and suggests he show Kayla the letter. Rick walks back towards the house. Dean follows, saying he didn’t come there to cause trouble but wanted to meet Rick. Rick says he knew Karen for less than a week; he also indicates he wasn’t convinced Dean was his. Kayla emerges and asks who Dean is. Rick looks challengingly at Dean, who says he’s no-one and walks back to Ryder, who waxes about how great the place is and asks about the “hot chick”, who Dean curtly says is his sister. Ryder asks Dean to take him to the station but Dean says he’s taking him back to Summer Bay. Ryder wants to walk but Dean snaps that Ryder has a family that care about him. They get in the car.
Tori examines Maggie with Ben watching and says there’s no infection: She’s still weak because the chemo and constant bed rest wasted her muscles and she needs to build it up. She suggests Maggie use a personal trainer and says Mason’s at the gym. As Tori leaves the room, she gets a phone call from Dr Wise. At the Diner, Roo frets to Alf and Irene about Ryder’s whereabouts, not mollified by the fact they’ve heard from him. Tori comes in and tells Robbo that they’ve got the go ahead for the IVF. Jasmine comes in but leaves without talking to them; Irene sees.
At the surf club, Mason gives Maggie a brief appraisal. He asks her what she’s hoping to achieve and she and Ben explain about doing the State 8. Mason approves and promises to help. In his flat, Robbo is on the phone discussing what he needs to do for the IVF. Jasmine turns up and he fills her in. She asks if he’s nervous, since there’s no turning back afterwards. Robbo says it’s good nervous, like when Lauren told him she was pregnant. Jasmine argues that this is different, since he’s not in a relationship with Tori. Robbo accepts that but says it’s the same excitement about the baby.
At the Diner, Roo continues to fret to Alf and John about Ryder until Alf suggests they go out and look for him. Ben and Maggie come in and tell them about the fundraising idea. Roo is supportive but has to hurry off. Irene offers to help out and John thinks Marilyn will also want to be involved. Further along the beach, Roo gets a phone call from Quinn, then she and Alf see Ryder approaching with Dean. Alf is annoyed that Dean didn’t let them know but Roo thanks him for bringing Ryder back. Dean leaves. Ryder doesn’t expect them to understand why he ran away but Alf suggests they have dinner at Salt and talk it over like adults. Irene finds Jasmine outside the Diner and tells her she saw her leave before. Jasmine explains that Robbo and Tori are taking the next step of the IVF. Irene wonders if it’s starting to feel a bit real for her. Jasmine says she’s scared about how Robbo will feel about Tori but it’s just an adjustment.
At Salt, Ryder hides behind the menu and then tries to go to the bathroom. Roo says they’re sorry for not being there and forgetting his birthday. Ryder says he didn’t run away because of that. Alf says they want to understand and accepts he ignored what Ryder was saying before he went to Hawaii: He should have taken him with him or at least made sure he was in a better headspace. They say Ryder can go to Quinn’s or anywhere else but also stay as long as he likes. Alf counsels him about not drinking to forget and Ryder agrees, having not enjoyed the hangover. Alf goes to get water but instead follows Dean, who entered during the conversation, out onto the balcony. He apologises for being short earlier, saying they were quick to judge and Dean’s a decent bloke, and thanks him for bringing Ryder back. Alone, Dean takes out the letter and burns it with a candle.
Next morning, Mason leads Maggie in a training session on the headland, stretching with strips. Ben watches and briefly chats to John. Mason encourages Maggie through the last three and congratulates her. Maggie is crying but tells Ben that she’s happy. Outside the Diner, Robbo meets up with Jasmine. She offers to go with him to the hospital before realising that would be weird. They kiss but are interrupted by Tori. Jasmine watches the pair go off without her.
John gives Ryder his roster at the surf club and checks he’s not going anywhere, saying he couldn’t bear to hear Alf whining again. Ryder runs into Dean and confirms he’s sticking around, saying he doesn’t have anywhere else to go. He asks if Dean’s going to see Rick again. Dean says he’s managed without a father until now but Ryder says if he had a dad like that he’d ask for an allowance and dreams of driving Kayla’s car. On the beach, Jasmine shapes up for a run, while at the hospital Tori and Robbo fill out their forms (with Tori suggesting Robbo put her down as next of kin) and settle down to wait. As Jasmine stops for a breather, she doesn’t look happy.
