Extended Summary

Ryder is banging on the door of Dean’s caravan. Alf comes along and tells him Dean’s doing community service. Ryder says he’ll work on his highest score on his phone until Dean’s back. Alf tells Ryder to come with him. Meanwhile, Brody and Ziggy go into the surf club, with Brody refusing to discuss his earlier comments and heading up to Salt. Ziggy fields a call from Maggie and tells her Brody’s busy at work. Ben is reluctantly eating Maggie’s gluten-free macrobiotic salad. Maggie suggests to Coco they start the study session early. Coco has found a new colour-coded highlighting system and leaves her phone in her room to avoid distractions. She still feels bad about her grades slipping but Ben and Maggie assure her they’re proud of her.

Ryder is playing with the pool balls in a bored manner while Alf is on the phone to John, trying to get him to find something for Ryder and also learning about a meeting. Dean comes in and he and Ryder chat. Alf quickly steps in and tells Ryder to come with him, although he’s not sure where. They head to the Diner where Alf tells Ryder John will pay him to mow the lawn and they can go fishing in the afternoon. Ryder reminds Alf he says fish don’t bite in the middle of the day. Alf sees Raffy and suggests Ryder hang with her but she says Marilyn’s about to take her to a study session. Alf tells Leah and Marilyn they’ve got a problem: Ryder’s hanging around Dean again. Leah decides to take Raffy and Ryder to Maggie and pick up study notes for Ryder. Ryder says he’s going fishing with Alf. Alf says fish don’t bite in the middle of the day.

Leah, Raffy and Ryder join Ben, Maggie and Coco at the farm house. Maggie quickly invites Ryder to join them and he complains about being passed around like a parcel. At the Morgan house, Ziggy is filling Justin in on what Brody said, about the guitar bringing up emotion and him bonding with Maggie. Justin says Kate taught Brody the guitar and to cook and their parents’ death is a minefield for him. Ziggy says the rest of them manage. Justin says Brody saw it happen, then realises Ziggy doesn’t know. Justin goes to Salt and tries to talk to Brody. Brody says he has to work. Justin says he’ll wait.

Alf is washing down a boat near the Diner. Leah appears and tells him about leaving Ryder with Maggie. They’re confident it will help him, but at that moment Ryder is making paper planes. Coco tries to discuss things with Maggie but Raffy joins Ryder in looking up pyramid facts on his phone. Maggie manages to get them to settle. Meanwhile, Justin asks Brody why he didn’t tell Ziggy about seeing their parents die. Brody tells him what Mason said about replacing Kate. Justin says he’ll deal with Mason and Brody needs to talk to Ziggy.

Ryder is drawing a picture while Maggie gives Coco and Raffy the question answers. Coco needs her green pen to highlight a mistake she made but Ryder is using it for colouring and tries to insist she use another one. Maggie takes him into the hall and tells him not to disrespect her. Ryder says she’s a glorified babysitter. Ben tries to step in but Ryder says no-one wants him to be there and storms out. As he is walking, Ben pulls up alongside him in the ute. Ryder refuses to go with him, even when Ben offers to take him back to the Bay. However, when Ben says he’s going there anyway and makes it clear he’ll drive alongside him the whole way, Ryder gets in on condition he doesn’t talk.

Alf sees Ben and Ryder arrive back near the Diner. Ryder walks out onto the wharf without speaking to him. Ben explains what happened. Alf notes Ryder’s missing Roo and Ty and feels isolated. He says it’s not Ben’s problem. At the Morgan house, Brody tells Ziggy he loves being part of her family and it seems so easy. However, he doesn’t want to forget his parents. Ziggy says he had sixteen years with Kate and won’t forget her: Playing and cooking is honouring her memory.

Maggie has ended the study session while Coco wonders what happened to Ben and Ryder. Brody and Ziggy turn up with the food for another dinner and Raffy asks to stay. Ben also returns and tells Maggie he left Ryder with Alf. They wonder if Ryder breaking up with Coco has contributed and think they need to keep an eye on him around her. Back at the Diner, Alf and Leah reflect on the day with Leah admitting she shouldn’t have left Ryder with Maggie. Alf says Roo used to know how to handle him and reiterates that Ryder misses her and Ty. He recalls that Roo gave Ryder a schedule for his sleep and study. Leah suggests they do that.

Ben thanks Brody for dinner as he, Ziggy and Raffy prepare to leave. Brody thanks Ziggy for all her help and she says he’s helped her through the hardest year of her life so now she’s going to help him. After the others have gone, Coco asks Ben and Maggie about Ryder. She admits she’s barely seen him since the break up. They assure her it’s not her fault. Meanwhile, Alf and Leah approach Ryder on the wharf and try to get him to go home. He refuses. Leah offers to get him a study schedule but Ryder says first they palm him off and then they try and control him. He knows they were stopping him spending time with Dean but says he’s used to looking after himself and doesn’t need them. He walks away.
