Extended Summary

Brody joins Mason on the balcony of Salt and jokes about Mason not trying any of the specials. Mason snaps that he’s not in the mood. Brody says Mason can’t stay angry at the world forever. He goes back inside where a similarly moody Colby asks where his pizza is. Brody offers him a free drink but the entrance of Chelsea helps Colby decide he’s not staying. Chelsea says not to let her drive him away and that she couldn’t lie to McCarthy. Colby accuses her of messing up his attempt to get his life back together. He takes the pizza and leaves. At the farm house, Maggie is trying to cook her own health food, this one being meringues made with chick pea water. They come out flat. She gets Ben to try one and he admits they’re not great. Maggie muses that that’s why Coco chose to eat at Raffy’s. Ben suggests they go to Salt since Brody can sort things for them.

Brody shows Ben, Maggie and Ziggy to a table, saying it’s been disinfected and the staff are all wearing masks (even though they’re not ill). Brody agrees with Maggie’s health food ideas and offers to teach her how to cook some recipes. Mason has been watching from the bar with a surly look on his face and walks past Brody without saying anything. Brody goes back to the bar and offers Chelsea another drink but she says she has a difficult day ahead and doesn’t want a hangover. Meanwhile, Colby is eating the pizza alone and looks at the ring in the box.

Next morning, John pulls off the road near the surf club, despite Marilyn protesting they can’t park there: He has seen some more graffiti on one of the lifesaver vehicles. He calls the police as Alf also appears, similarly unimpressed. Colby arrives at the police station and there is an awkward silence between him and Chelsea. He tells her not to look like he’s about to have a go: He’s realised that they do need to work together, although he turns down her suggestion of lunch. Chelsea says they’ve just had a call.

John leads Colby and Chelsea into the surf club, where he gives a lifesaver, Gail, equipment to clean the vehicle. He complains to the officers about the lack of progress or proper investigation in the case, saying they try too hard to be liked instead of punishing lawbreakers. Chelsea asks if his vehicle is the one parked in the area that’s meant to be clear for emergency vehicle access and gives him a ticket. As they leave, Colby is in two minds, thinking Chelsea should have exercised discretion. Chelsea says everyone thinks they have an excuse for breaking the law so she has to deal in absolutes. The conversation threatens to spill over into an argument about their past until Colby accepts it’s done.

Mason is looking in the fridge when Brody returns a nearly empty bottle of milk. Mason complains about not getting breakfast, but softens a bit when he sees Brody strumming the guitar, saying it’s good to hear him do it again. However, his features cloud over again when Brody mentions his talk with Maggie and how he can still play for the people he loves. Ziggy enters and reminds Brody Maggie wants to get started. Soon, at the farm house, Brody has started Maggie’s lesson. Ziggy starts filming him but Brody ropes her and Ben into helping prepare the meal as well.

At the Diner, John complains to Irene and Marilyn about the ticket and $250 fine. Irene suggests he ask Chelsea to drop it. Marilyn tries to veto the idea and John getting worked up leaves Alf and Irene thinking he’s going to get locked up. John insists he won’t suck up to Chelsea…and we cut to him doing just that, delivering a long and grovelling apology to her with Marilyn at his side, before asking if they can tear up the ticket. Colby chimes in that they found some spray cans near the surf club and are going to look for fingerprints. In a comment for Colby’s benefit as much as John’s, Chelsea agrees they can exercise discretion this time but he shouldn’t do it again. After John and Marilyn have left, Colby compliments Chelsea, saying it was well played.

Back at the Diner, John is now singing the police’s praises to Alf, Irene and Marilyn. Alf reminds him there’s still the graffiti to deal with. John tells him about the spray cans and thinks they can leave it to Colby and Chelsea. Meanwhile, Colby debates whether to knock on Chelsea’s caravan door only for her to come up behind him. He thinks there were better ways for her to get back in touch than getting a transfer but she says he’d have ignored anything else. He reminds her she broke up with him. Chelsea says she was angry but didn’t want to lose him. They realise their reason for breaking up no longer applies. Colby suggests they car pool next day and he’ll buy her a coffee on the way in. Chelsea says she’ll buy him one the next day.

Ben, Ziggy, Maggie and Brody have finished eating. Ziggy compliments Brody on the meal and he muses about putting it on the menu at Salt. Maggie and Ben comment that then they could get it as a takeaway but Brody wants to continue giving Maggie lessons and Maggie agrees. Soon after, at Salt, Brody raves to Mason about how much he’s enjoying teaching Maggie. Mason takes the wind out of his sails by cattily remarking that he’s found a replacement for Kate.

Maggie has made another failed attempt to follow an online recipe and she and Ben wonder where Brody’s gone. Ziggy finds Brody on the beach and asks why he didn’t come back to the house. She comments that he’s now Maggie’s golden child. Brody snaps that he’s not and had a mother of his own, storming off.
