Ty celebrates his 16th birthday in the Bay. Will Dean get caught with Brett’s dirty money? Robbo and Colby remain vigilant – suspecting that Ebony’s games aren’t over yet.
Extended Summary
Colby is looking at his laptop: When someone enters the flat behind him, he notes he’s no good at social media, before discovering it’s Robbo. Robbo explains that he looked to be on the way to remand, but got his bail conditions reinstated on condition he wear a tag, live with Colby and doesn’t leave town. He apologises for not warning Colby about Ebony while Colby apologises for dragging him into it. Robbo wonders about the stuff in his room, just as Dean comes back and is surprised to see Robbo there. Later, as Robbo is accepting a delivery of pizza, Dean is saying he’ll get going but Colby says he has nowhere else to go and should sleep on the couch. Robbo assumes it’s because of Dean helping Ash track him down and says they should put it behind them, shaking hands. Dean takes one of the pizzas. Robbo goes to move the bag with the money in. Dean snatches it away and snaps at him not to touch his stuff, then says he’s just joking.
Coco joins Raffy, Ryder and Ty at the Diner and says Maggie’s in a positive mood, although she won’t be able to leave hospital until her immune system’s improved. John, Roo and Marilyn watch them from the counter and Roo confirms Ty’s doing better at school. Later, the four teens are going for a walk on the beach. Walking ahead of the boys, Coco asks Raffy how she’s handling living with Ty. Raffy says it’s a bit awkward but they’re friends again. Ty gets a text that he insists isn’t a secret. Ryder looks at it and sees it’s the foster agency wishing him a happy birthday for tomorrow, which they were all unaware of. Ty insists it’s no big deal: He’s never had a party before and doesn’t need one now.
Raffy, Ryder and Coco head to the Diner to fill in John and Marilyn. They had Ty’s birthdate in his file but hadn’t realised. Despite what Ty said, they plan to throw a surprise party. Irene says she can hold the fort at work and they’re welcome to use the kitchen. Coco says she won’t be able to help in the morning because she has to be at the hospital. As everyone else drifts away, Raffy sits with Marilyn, suspecting something’s wrong. Marilyn recalls what Raffy said about Ty planning to leave as soon as he turned sixteen. Raffy thinks things have changed now. Meanwhile, Brody and Justin meet at Salt for a catch-up. Justin suggests it’s hard living with the in-laws and Brody admits it’s a bit crowded and he and Ziggy see less of each other than before they were married. Justin suggests things will be on hold until Maggie’s better.
Colby encourages Robbo to leave things up to the police but Robbo is keen to track down Ebony. Colby reminds him he can’t leave town but Robbo suspects she’s still around. Dean emerges from the bathroom and settles down on the couch while Robbo goes to bed. Colby checks the doors and windows before doing the same. Dean puts the bag under his head. Next morning, John, Marilyn, Raffy and Ty are having a birthday breakfast at the Diner. Irene gives Ty cupcakes that spell out “Happy Birthday” and Ty reminisces how his gran used to collect birthday cards. John starts to joke that they didn’t get him anything before Marilyn gives Ty some headphones.
Dean is on the phone to Brett outside the surf club, warning that he now lives with two ex-cops, but doesn’t get anywhere. Justin comes along and comments on Dean not looking rested. Dean tells him that Robbo’s back, although he doesn’t have any details. He asks about Willow. Justin says Tori got her to see a counsellor. He asks about the money and Dean says it’s sorted. Back at the flat, Colby and Robbo comment on Dean’s mess. Colby checks his laptop for information on Bella but there’s only a good luck message from a stranger. He decides to concentrate on his tribunal and physio. He notes Robbo’s probably right about Ebony coming back to finish the job and they both resolve to look out.
Roo, Raffy and Ryder are setting things up for the party near the beach. Coco arrives and she and Ryder have a moment when they both reach for the same item. John and Marilyn bring along a blindfolded Ty: When they whip the blindfold off, everyone wishes him happy birthday. Raffy takes Coco aside and asks about Ryder. Coco notes he was supportive last week and she thinks she likes him again. Later, the teens are in their beach clothes heading down to the beach while Roo wonders about Ty going for his license. Ryder keeps watching Coco. Ty quietly asks him about it. Ryder is worried about discussing it with Ty but Ty says he’s over him. Ryder admits he’s not sure he ever stopped liking her.
Dean accepts a key from a worker at the gym and goes to the lockers. Colby appears and says they could have walked in together. He asks Dean what happened with Willow. Dean doesn’t give too many details and snaps at Colby when he pushes it. Colby says he’s there if Dean wants to talk. Down on the beach, Raffy and Ty play with an inflatable ball. Ryder and Coco come back from the sea and he sprays her with a water pistol. Raffy and Ty discuss the pair and say they’ve both encouraged them to go for it. Raffy reminds Ty that he said he’d leave when he was sixteen and Ty confirms he wants to stay now. Ryder hands Coco her towel, and after a lot of hesitancy, they kiss. Ryder asks Coco to go out with him again and she agrees. They rejoin the adults and Roo drily notes it looked like they were having fun. Raffy takes Coco aside to ask for details. Ty gets a phone call from Catherine. Marilyn tries quizzing him but he says it was just a check-in. They sing a rather discordant Happy Birthday.
Justin finds Brody on the Salt balcony and says he should have told him before that he’s proud of how he’s turned his life around and supported Ziggy. He assures him they’ll get their own place eventually. As Brody heads back to work, Justin approaches Robbo at a nearby table. Robbo shows him his tag. Justin thanks him for doing right by Tori and adds that none of them believe in the murder charge. He is as keen to see Ebony caught as Robbo is, because he won’t see Ava until she is. Robbo heads downstairs where Dean and Colby are playing pool. Dean suggests Robbo play the winner while Colby protests he’s been in a coma. Dean gets a text from Brett saying to drop the money off in the city and details will follow. He tells Colby and Robbo he’s going on a surfing trip for a few days. After he’s gone, Robbo asks Colby what happened to Ebony’s burner phone. Colby still has it but there’s nothing on it. Robbo thinks it might be worth another look.
John finds Marilyn sitting on a bench. Marilyn says she called Catherine but she wouldn’t give details of her conversation with Ty. Marilyn is still worried Ty might want to leave, saying he’s come so far and they have so much more they can do for him. John agrees that if he leaves they won’t be able to.
