Extended Summary
Alf and Roo exit the boat shed with Alf refusing to give Roo any help. Roo says she wants to understand why Martha did what she did. Alf says Martha might not want anything to do with them or might be dead. Roo says she might want to get in touch but feel she can’t. Alf still won’t help. Meanwhile, Hunter is waiting near the beach when Jennifer arrives with a hamper, saying she’s raided the fridge at home. Hunter tells her he’s enrolled at uni and Jennifer offers to help him sort out his timetable, saying an ex of hers left it too late and got the worst days. Some playful tickling ends with Hunter chasing Jennifer onto the beach and carrying her towards the sea. Neither of them notice Olivia sitting on the beach glowering at them.
Olivia complains to Irene in the Diner kitchen, convinced Hunter and Jennifer are more than friends. She also reveals that she’s finished some designs and sent them in. Irene tells her not to let a rebound distract her. Olivia picks up on the term rebound but Irene reiterates to focus on design. At Salt, Hunter is watching as Jennifer sorts out his classes on a laptop. Mason comes over and learns about Hunter going to uni, congratulating him. Jennifer finishes and says Hunter can take her out to dinner to thank her, going to get changed. Mason cautions Hunter about going too fast with Jennifer. Hunter insists they’re just hanging out but says that, while he’s not exactly happy, Jennifer makes him less unhappy.
Ben and Maggie are lying next to each other on the bed. Maggie takes Ben’s hand and says she’s sorry. Ben is reluctant to talk about her not making it and tries maintaining that the treatment will work. Maggie says she’s not giving up but they need to prepare for the worst. Ben isn’t convinced by that and can’t even say that she might die but says they’ll talk once she’s rested. He leaves a sleepy Maggie who tells him to give her twenty minutes. Later, Ziggy and Coco come home but Ben tells them to keep it down because Maggie’s resting. Coco was hoping she could help her and Raffy study but Ben says they’ll have to manage without her and asks Ziggy to help him get some boxes.
Jennifer gets off the bus and tells Hunter she’s bought a new dress for the night. She assures him it’s just an excuse to use her dad’s credit card. Olivia watches as they say goodbye, with Jennifer kissing Hunter on the cheek, then goes over to Hunter and says she cared about their relationship but it’s obvious he didn’t if he’s with someone else already. She calls Jennifer a rebound but Hunter retorts that she’s the best thing to happen to him in a while. As Olivia walks away, he adds that she isn’t high maintenance. Olivia throws back that rebounds always are. Later, Hunter is doing weights at the gym and Mason spots him, wondering about his change of mood. Hunter tells him about Olivia and says she was smug and he wants to move on.
Raffy is trying to test Coco but it’s clear she’s distracted. Raffy asks about Maggie and suggests they help Ben, who has just come in with a long-suffering Ziggy. He explains that they need to clear out Kat’s flat and that that’s why Maggie’s tired. They all agree to help out. Later, at the flat, Ben insists that they put things in bubble wrap and keep the kitchen and bathroom stuff separate, since that’s how Maggie wanted it done. After he’s gone through to the bedroom, Raffy says he’s just worried. Ziggy and Coco are grateful of an outside perspective and Raffy says her mother tried to hide things but talking about it made it easier to handle when she died. Ben partly overhears and angrily shuts down the conversation, sending them away and saying he’ll finish off himself.
Olivia is working on her laptop at the Diner while nearby Roo complains to John and Marilyn, calling Alf stubborn. She wonders if there’s something Alf doesn’t want her to find out and says she’s prepared for what might happen. John goes to Salt where Alf is sitting and doesn’t initially respond when John greets him. John asks if he’s hiding and if there’s something he’s keeping from Roo. Alf dismisses the idea and complains about Martha being viewed like a saint after abandoning her family. John says it’s not about Martha, it’s about Alf’s relationship with Roo and the fact it’s under threat.
Alf and Roo run into each other near the beach. Alf apologises for dropping the news on her and expecting her not to do anything about it, while Roo apologises for not understanding that it’s hard for him. However, she still intends to look for Martha, to Alf’s frustration. Alf says he came to terms with it a long time ago. Roo says she hasn’t had as long as him. At the Palmer house, Raffy has made some ginger biscuits for Maggie but lets John have a broken one in return for driving her to the farm. Roo turns up with her bags and takes John and Marilyn up on their offer to move in, telling them Alf’s idea of sorting things out involved her backing down. Raffy is fine with it so long as Roo doesn’t give her homework and lets her have one of the biscuits.
Hunter and Jennifer turn up at Salt. Hunter compliments Jennifer on her dress and compliments her in general. He is now more coupley and kisses her. Later, after dinner, Jennifer says next time’s on her. Hunter suggests they do it tomorrow night. Jennifer is appreciative but somewhat thrown, reminding him he said he wanted to take things slowly. She says that she doesn’t want to be a rebound but Hunter insists it’s not about that and kisses her. He asks if she needs to get back and Jennifer agrees to go for a walk on the beach.
Raffy turns up at the farmhouse with the biscuits, explaining they’re good for nausea. Ziggy and Coco apologise for Ben but Raffy understands. She leaves shortly before Maggie emerges and wonders where Ben is. Ziggy and Coco are reluctant to say but she tells them they have to be honest with each other. Ben is alone at the flat when Maggie calls him, saying she woke up and found he wasn’t there. Ben says he’s just finishing up and everything’s fine. Ben sniffles a bit but just says he’ll be home soon. After he ends the call however, he bursts into tears.
