Extended Summary

Justin is fixing the buggy outside the surf club and is irritable with Raffy, who accuses him of chickening out of talking to Scarlett. Justin says he has to take the buggy for a test drive and makes it clear that Raffy isn’t invited. Meanwhile, Ash and Tori arrive back at the beach house. Ash notes that Tori didn’t say much on the way back. Tori says she has to get going. Ash notes that Mick has that effect on people but Tori says it wasn’t him: She was scared by the way Ash lost it at him.

Mason is joking around with Beth, saying he could add embarrassing things to her chart. Beth becomes short of breath and Mason tries to make light of it, before offering to go and get her a drink. However, once he’s left the room both of them are less than cheery. Down on the beach, Justin is driving the buggy. He comes across Scarlett, still clutching Mr Mushy; she explains he was Max’s. Justin asks to talk but at that moment Caleb arrives back with their coffees. He asks Justin to give them a minute and Justin drives off. Scarlett says Caleb looked at her earlier the way he used to and asks if he came there to win her back. Caleb says he didn’t but he does still loves her and he’s no longer sure that closure is what he wants.

Tori finds Mason at the hospital. He tells her Beth is fading away and knows that it could take months for a heart to become available. Tori encourages him to stay positive and take one day at a time. Mason goes back to Beth’s room and claims Pandza gave him some facial exercises for her, repeating the joke she played on him when they first met. However, Beth tells him not to hide anything from her. Mason admits that he hates seeing her like this and is trying to be strong. Beth feels uncomfortable with the fact that they’re waiting for someone to die.

Leah, VJ and Ash are waiting at the beach house with Luc when Irene returns. She tells them she went back in to see Mick and he’s asked her to help him. She insists she hasn’t said yes yet…VJ quickly picks up on the “yet”, aghast that she still might. Ash vehemently insists that she can’t help him. At the Diner flat, Caleb tells Scarlett it just slipped out but thinks Scarlett feels it too. He says there used to be three of them and now there’s just the two of them again but it could still work.

Leah and Irene chat out the back. Irene doesn’t know what to do and thinks it’s her fault that Mick had a bad start in life, despite Leah pointing out it was beyond her control. Leah says Mick doesn’t get a free ride and Irene wouldn’t forgive VJ or Ash the things that Mick’s done. Irene argues that Mick has a mental illness but Leah says she’s not responsible for him. Ash calls Leah in to help out with Luc and Irene watches them and VJ through the window. She goes back to the psychiatric facility and tells Mick she’s thought about it but has to do what’s best for Luc. Mick insists he’d stay away from her but Irene doesn’t trust him to stick to it and says it’s safest for him to stay in there for the moment. After she’s gone, Mick comments “Thanks anyway” in a slightly resentful tone.

Scarlett runs into Justin outside the surf club gym and he notes that she hasn’t got the monkey with her. He says he thinks they should stop putting their relationship on the back seat, prompting an ironic laugh. Justin realises that Caleb wants her back and Scarlett can’t say it’s not on her radar. Justin tells her to let him know when she knows what she wants. Later, Scarlett is back at her flat; she looks at Mushy, resting on top of the sofa, and at her locket, which contains a photo of Max and another of him with her and Caleb. At the hospital, Mason is watching over a sleeping Beth. Tori sticks her head in and notes Beth’s favourite song is on continuous loop. Mason goes to leave but Beth wakes up and asks him to stay until Alan and Jackie get back.

Ash tells Tori he’s sorry she saw that side of him: He’s not proud of it but it’s part of him to fight for the people he loves. Meanwhile, the parole board ask Mick how they know he won’t reoffend. Mick says he’s always blamed other people but he knows now he has to take responsibility. Ash tells Tori he can’t get past what Mick did to Billie. Tori tells him he has to deal with it another way. The air cleared, they kiss. Irene and Leah arrive and Irene tells them she’s not going to back Mick. She wants Luc to have the start in life they didn’t have and that means keeping Mick away from her. Mick tells the parole board that he understands why Irene wouldn’t speak up for him and doesn’t blame her. Shortly after, Mick walks out of the facility…

Mason finds Tori and Sarah waiting in the corridor for an MVA. The ambulance crew arrive with the patient, Ella Gilbert, who is cold blue and was unresponsive at the scene. Tori orders her intubated and a head CT. Sarah checks her wallet for next of kin. Later, Mason checks the wallet and finds a donor card. He joins Tori and Sarah in looking at Ella’s scans: She has an irreversible brain injury. Mason checks she’s brain dead, having already heard from Darlene that her husband’s on the way in. He tells Tori that she could be the one to save Beth…
