Extended Summary

Hunter pushes Wally to admit that he and Charlotte were together, more than once. Wally recalls Charlotte having a boyfriend (who he calls Mac until Hunter and Olivia correct him) and Hunter tells him about the DNA test coming back negative. Wally says it still can’t be him: He’s infertile since having mumps when he was little. Meanwhile, Roo compliments Alf on the reference. Alf asks her for a lift to drop it off and Roo wonders why he isn’t walking, saying he’s been overly cautious since being attacked. After a bit of pushing, Alf says he’s a silly old fool who can’t even defend himself. Roo gets a phone call from Kat saying there was no-one near the campsite. She offers to take the reference round herself and Alf agrees.

John looks morosely over his police records: Four counts of arson, three weeks in jail, three months community service. Marilyn optimistically suggests that the interview and references will help, along with the fact they’ve been foster parents before. They decide not to mention it to Raffy and John goes to pick her up from the hospital. He finds her in the corridor where she says that Tori insists Mason’s getting better but she isn’t convinced, recalling what happened to Decker. John does his best to reassure her as she expresses disappointment that she won’t be moving home. John suggests they get a vanilla slice… because that’s his favourite.

As a server brings them menus, Hunter remains unconvinced by Wally’s story, asking why he came to Summer Bay. Wally says Claire knew about his affair with Charlotte, which is why they left the area, and it took him a long time to make it up to her. He panicked when he read the letter and sent it back, then worried about Hunter turning up and stirring things up so decided to make it clear he’s not his father. Wally decides to leave. Olivia encourages Hunter to follow him, saying Wally might know something. Hunter chases Wally down and asks if there was anyone else around. Wally says it’s a period he’s not proud of. Hunter tearfully tells him that Charlotte was murdered and always wanted him to have a relationship with his father.

John and Marilyn discuss Raffy and keeping the fostering idea from her. Raffy comes through and they ask if she’s meeting friends but she just wants to sit outside on her own. Marilyn insists they do something together. John suggests shopping or pampering, although Raffy looks less keen. Later, Marilyn and Raffy are relaxing with face packs on and their feet in water. Raffy is enjoying it more than she thought although John quips that they look like Shrek. Marilyn picks out a lipstick for Raffy and they joke about John joining them. Roo turns up and gives them the reference for FACS. Raffy wonders what it’s about.

At the Diner, Irene finishes a phone call and tells Roo that the afternoon delivery of fruit has been stolen as well. Scarlett comes in and Roo asks her what she thinks of Alf. Scarlett says he’s in good condition for his age and Roo relates what he said about himself. Scarlett offers to talk to him. Back at Salt, despite it being late Wally is regaling Hunter with stories of Charlotte, including one about her rescuing a kitten from a tree. Olivia is at the bar and Irene joins her. Olivia explains who Wally is and how he can’t be Hunter’s father. Irene recalls that Madge Wilkins’ husband thought the same thing and they ended up having seven children.

Alf is buttering himself some toast at home when Scarlett turns up and presents him with a new fishing knife (via a choice Crocodile Dundee quote). Alf begins to suspect that Roo sent her and Scarlett replies that she volunteered. Alf feels he’s getting old but Scarlett says that the man was massive and even Justin couldn’t have handled him. They reflect that he’s probably long gone…but as they speak, the man is breaking into the Diner by smashing a window.

Marilyn cleans Raffy up as she and John reassure her that she won’t have to leave unless she wants to, even if they have someone else stay with them. They add that they don’t have much chance anyway but Raffy thinks it’d be a shame if they don’t pass. At Salt, Hunter, Olivia and Wally finish their meal, with Hunter reflecting on how the food was better when Brody was around. Wally notes he’d better find somewhere to stay the night and Olivia recommends the Sands. Wally insists on paying so Hunter offers to shout him breakfast the next morning. After he’s gone, Olivia tells Hunter that she’s checked and mumps doesn’t always cause infertility, just a low sperm count. She thinks he should still get Wally to take a DNA test.

Next morning, Roo finds Alf making her bacon and eggs. He says that Scarlett’s chat helped and he’s going to go and open the bait shop. After he’s gone, Roo gets a phone call from Irene. At the Diner, Irene is filling Stevenson and another police officer in on the break-in, saying the till was empty and the thief only stole food. Roo turns up; Irene was trying to get hold of Leah, who has gone for a walk. The police go to photograph the outside and Roo offers to help Irene clean up.

John and Marilyn have made Raffy a breakfast of eggs benedict. Raffy gives them a reference she’s written, describing them as kind and caring and saying they cheered her up when Mason was in hospital. John jokes that she’s like a son to him. Meanwhile, Wally meets Hunter at Salt with a list of people who were around when he was conceived. Hunter asks if Wally ever had his fertility tested. Wally says it’s what the doctors told his mother and he and his wife tried for a long time without success, insisting the similarities between him and Hunter are just coincidence. He decides to leave but Hunter asks him to do the DNA test, offering him his own DNA record to compare it to. Wally takes it but tells Hunter not to contact him.

At the Diner, Hunter fills Olivia in and wonders what to do if Wally doesn’t take the test: Does he assume it was him or carry on looking? Nearby, Stevenson tells Irene it was probably local kids messing about. Irene chats to Hunter and Olivia about the break-in, expressing worry at not knowing. Out on the pier, Alf hears noises from the boat and pulls back the tarpaulin to find the man from the bush there. He demands to know who he is.
