Extended Summary

Brody and Mason continue to lie prone in the car. The other driver approaches them: Zannis. After looking them over for a moment, he walks away. However, once he’s gone, Mason begins to stir. He tries to rouse Brody without success and notices his phone on the floor. He takes his seatbelt off and feels a pain in his leg but manages to retrieve the phone and call an ambulance.

Coco is at Summer Bay High in uniform. Maggie comes out of her office and yells for attention, to Coco’s mounting horror, eventually pulling out a whistle and blowing it. She says the bell has gone and everyone should be in class, singling out Coco, who she calls Coco Pops. Another girl, Jennifer, is amused so Maggie sends her to the office. Raffy calls Maggie far out but Coco is mortified. At the farm, Ben approaches Ziggy with her phone, saying that Brody finally stopped messaging her. Ziggy isn’t happy about his lack of respect for her privacy, saying that’s why the whole town hates them. Maggie and Coco pull up: Coco forgot her PE kit.

At Salt, Tori is looking over the books and tells Justin things aren’t looking good and they need Brody back. Ben comes in and asks for a six pack of their most expensive beer for Alf. Justin has heard about him being the pier’s new landlord and says he’s best off being straight with Alf, although he serves him anyway. Ben asks about Brody; both Justin and Tori try to convince him Brody’s not a threat to Ziggy.

At the Stewart house, Leah brings Alf a cup of tea despite his complaining. She is surprised to discover VJ’s home: He explains he has a free period but she says he should be studying so close to trials. Ben turns up and he and VJ are surprised to see each other, it taking a few moments to establish that VJ lives there and Ben is the one who’s bought the pier. Ben gives Alf the beer but Alf is unimpressed and says he’s going for a nap while Leah says she has to get some washing in. VJ expresses amusement at Ben’s failure.

Jennifer approaches Coco and Raffy in the corridor and complains about Maggie giving her a detention. Raffy tries to calm Coco down but Coco snaps at her and then knocks Jennifer’s files out of her hands when she calls her Coco Pops. VJ steps in to calm things, commenting on Coco not making a good first impression. Maggie comes over and asks Raffy to come to the office, saying Justin’s on the phone. Raffy presses for information and Maggie explains Brody and Mason have been in a car accident before leading her away. At the accident site, the fire crew are cutting Mason out. Justin and Tori pull up; Justin is on the phone to Raffy, telling her the police will pick her up. Tori consults with an ambulance officer on Brody, who is already on a stretcher and has a head injury. She goes with him in an ambulance leaving Justin with Mason, who is now out of the car.

Tori arrives at the hospital with Brody, closely followed by Justin and Mason. Brody mumbles an apology to Mason before being taken for a CT scan. Mason explains that Zannis is out on bail and Brody thought that the driver tail-gating them was him and grabbed the wheel, causing the crash. He isn’t sure if it was or not but adds that he caught Brody using again. Justin recalls Brody saying Zannis would get revenge but Tori thinks he was wrong. Meanwhile, Ben arrives back at the farm where Ziggy is sitting on the veranda but claims she was job hunting a moment ago. Ben complains about VJ and wonders how he can still be at school when he looks twenty-five. Coco comes up and mentions her falling-out with Raffy and how her brothers have been in an accident. When she hears that it’s Brody and Mason, Ziggy dashes off.

Tori tells Justin that Brody’s CT came back clear; he doesn’t have a cranial bleed, just concussion. Mason is due for an x-ray and Tori goes to check on him. He says he has pins and needles in his hands. Tori tells him to squeeze her hands but his left hand doesn’t move and he can barely wriggle his fingers. Tori orders a trauma scan but then Mason starts choking. Raffy arrives with a police officer just as Tori calls out for help. Justin and Raffy see Tori bagging Mason before Justin leads Raffy away to see Brody; they tell him there’s an emergency with Mason. Ziggy turns up and Justin and Raffy leave them alone. Brody says he doesn’t know how Mason is and she shouldn’t have come because he’s bad for her. He tells her to go.

At the Diner, VJ fills Leah in on Coco’s spat with Jennifer and notes that he feels sorry for her. Leah thinks he should be concentrating on his trials. Maggie comes in and tells Leah she just wants coffee. Leah asks her about her day; Maggie is somewhat overwhelmed and Leah explains that Zac is her ex and she was the guidance counsellor at the school for a while. She adds what VJ said about Coco; Maggie is disappointed that she seems to be having the same troubles. Leah says kids always get into trouble and VJ’s had a rough year. Later, Ben meets Maggie at Salt, saying Coco’s brooding at home. Maggie is reading VJ’s file, saying she wants to help him. She mentions him losing his wife and custody of his daughter but Ben is unimpressed despite Maggie pointing out they had Ziggy at 19, saying he used to be VJ. He mentions Ziggy going to visit Brody; Maggie muses that she’s an adult but Ben is determined to keep her away from him. They then get a call from Ziggy asking them to pick her up.

VJ turns up at the farm house and makes a joke about Coco being in her pyjamas. She says she isn’t in the mood but he tells her he just thought she might need a friend. He brings her some pizzas and they recall their previous outing. Coco assures him she won’t lie anymore. VJ says Raffy will soon forgive her. He gets mess down his front and Coco says she’ll get some stain remover. Just as he takes his shirt off, Ben, Maggie and Ziggy arrive home. Despite VJ saying it’s not what he looks like and protests from everyone else, Ben grabs VJ and bodily throws him out of the house, yelling at him to stay away from his daughter. He doesn’t seem to understand why everyone else is staring at him in horror.

Tori rejoins the others in Brody’s room. She says Mason has a neck injury which has affected his movement and breathing. He’s on life support in an induced coma. Brody asks if he’ll be able to walk and breathe again. Tori doesn’t answer. Later, Tori and Raffy are in Mason’s room. Justin brings Brody in in a wheelchair. Brody says he knows it’s all his fault and that’s what they’re thinking but insists Zannis was there. Justin says they’ll tell the police but Tori says he was hallucinating and they know he was using again. Brody says he’ll go to rehab and repeatedly apologises but no-one responds.
