Extended Summary

Drew is stunned as he tries to come to terms with the fact that Peter’s standing before him. Peter moves to him, wanting to explain, but Drew cowers back wanting to know what the hell’s going on? Peter explains the story – how he brought down the prominent mafia-type family, the Gillen’s in the 90’s for their mass drug imports. The entire family was jailed and soon after, Dennis Gillen’s wife was murdered in her cell. Dennis vowed to hunt Peter down and kill him in revenge. Peter received word just before Zoe’s recent rampage, that Dennis had been freed from prison. The CID wanted to put him into hiding for safety, but after the hell year of tracking Zoe, he wanted a normal life back again. The Witness Protection people had other ideas and had been watching Peter for some time. When the explosion happened at the wedding, they saw this as the perfect opportunity to ‘remove’ Peter from society.

They quickly hatched a plan, leading everyone to believe that Peter was dead, by giving him a drug which induced a very deep coma like state and in turn lead the hospital machines to produce false readings. When news of Jack’s need for a liver came to light, the Witness Protection team enlisted the help of Dr Green to make all believe that Jack was receiving Peter’s liver. Dr Green then provided them with medicines to aid Peter’s recovery while he was residing in the safe house. The first Peter knew of any of these plans was when he woke up two days later. He was outraged to learn of all that happened against his will, but it was too late to do anything about it – Peter Baker was dead. Peter then confirms that the thugs were targeting Drew to try and get Peter out of hiding as they had discovered that he was still alive, but Peter didn’t learn of their threats to his son until much later on, which is why he came back. They have to move quickly now – Dennis Gillen is still after him and wants him dead. The only way to protect Drew is to turn himself in to Gillen. Drew refuses to let Peter turn himself over to be killed – there has to be another way! Peter forces Drew out to the car, insisting that this is the only way, both on the verge of tears. Then a car pulls up – it’s Frank, the thug and Dennis Gillen! Peter begs that they let Drew go – Dennis doesn’t care, it’s Peter he wants. Drew refuses to flee, but Peter forces him to go, watching sadly as his son runs into the bushland. Drew’s legs buckle beneath him as he hears a gunshot ring out – he collapses to the ground sobbing.

Meanwhile, at the Station, Dan and Leah panic at the thought of losing Drew – where could he be? Then McGrath gets a call reporting the sound of the gunshot. The officers find Drew walking in a daze along the roadway – he eventually says ‘they shot him…’ – the officers pull up around the house and McGrath goes inside and he see a pair of legs sticking out – it’s Dennis Gillen! Then Peter emerges asking if they’ve found Drew? McGrath spins around and nearly collapse with shock at the sight of Peter Baker! McGrath returns to the station, leading Drew to a panicked Leah and Dan – they look to McGrath for an explanation – but he thinks there’s someone else who could explain it better than him. Curious, Leah and Dan look at the door to see Peter! Leah & Dan can’t believe their eyes!

At the hospital, Rachel lets Jack know that it isn’t medically possible that he has Peter’s liver if they have different blood types – but the focus quickly returns to needing to save his life. If they can’t find a blood match there is no point operating again, it’s too risky. They need a match to donate or things will get a whole lot worse… Having heard of Jack’s state, Beth, Matilda and Martha soon arrive, but Martha hangs back a little, with everything that has gone on with her and Jack, she’s feeling uncomfortable. Rachel appears letting them know that he’s fading fast, they need that blood ASAP. Seeing the state his son is in, Tony breaks down in Beth’s arms – will he make it? Alf comforts Martha, reminding her that it’s times like this when you realize how much you truly care for someone – but Martha doesn’t look convinced… Rachel has been on the computer system, madly trying to search for a blood match for Jack, when she comes across one – it’s Martha! Shock and relief all round. Martha doesn’t hesitate to donate and is lead off as Matilda asks Lucas what’s going on with him and Belle? Lucas is dismissive – they kissed, but doesn’t know if it’s going anywhere and lets Mattie know that Jack is more on his mind right now. Mattie backs off, realizing it’s not the right time, as Rachel tells Martha that she saved Jack’s life. Alf gives Martha some words of advice – suggesting that she needs to go in and visit Jack. After much thought, Martha moves in to sit beside Jack, who is still unconscious. She’s feeling very awkward being there, but takes his hand and very quietly asks him to please wake up… Will he?
